Review Stuart Davis: A Catalogue Raisonne (3 volumes) (Yale University Art Gallery) / Yale University Press:

Stuart Davis (1892-1964) made a mark on the art world early in his career, first with his Ashcan works and then with his highly personal version of Cubism, which firmly established American modernism as a force that could rival its European counterpart. Over the course of six decades, Davis produced artworks that drew inspiration from the European modernists but were deeply rooted in the popular culture of the United States. Jazz music and hipster talk, vaudeville stages, city streetscapes, New England fishing villages, gasoline stations, store fronts, and commercial packaging and advertising images were among the sources that infused his art with energy, bringing crisp edges, radiant colour, and syncopated rhythms to a vast body of paintings, watercolours, and drawings. Documenting the life's work of this prolific and highly influential artist, who affected almost every development in American art from second-generation Ashcan realism around 1912 to colour field and geometric painting in the 1960s, is a monumental achievement. In these three volumes, the editors have catalogued 1,749 artworks by the artist, including more than 600 works never previously illustrated, providing extensive documentation and information about each one. A detailed chronology of Davis' life, as well as an enlightening discussion of the compositional relationship between certain works spanning his oeuvre, rounds out this study. Exquisitely designed and produced, "Stuart Davis: A Catalogue Raisonne" will be the definitive reference on the artist's work for many years to come.

Review Assimilation's Agent: My Life as a Superintendent in the Indian Boarding School System / University of Nebraska Press:

Assimilation’s Agent reveals the life and opinions of Edwin L. Chalcraft (1855–1943), a superintendent in the federal Indian boarding schools during the critical period of forced assimilation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chalcraft was hired by the Office of Indian Affairs (now known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs) in 1883. During his nearly four decades of service, he worked at a number of Indian boarding schools and agencies, including the Chehalis Indian School in Oakville, Washington; Puyallup Indian School in Tacoma, Washington; Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon; Wind River Indian School in Wind River, Wyoming; Jones Male Academy in Hartshorne, Oklahoma; and Siletz Indian Agency in Oregon. In this memoir Chalcraft discusses the Grant peace policy, the inspection system, allotment, the treatment of tuberculosis, corporal punishment, alcoholism, and patronage. Extensive coverage is also given to the Indian Shaker Church and the government’s response to this perceived threat to assimilation. Assimilation’s Agent illuminates the sometimes treacherous political maneuverings and difficult decisions faced by government officials at Indian boarding schools. It offers a rarely heard and today controversial "top-down" view of government policies to educate and assimilate Indians. Drawing on a large collection of unpublished letters and documents, Cary C. Collins’s introduction and notes furnish important historical background and context. [+]
Assimilation’s Agent illustrates the government's long-term program for dealing with Native peoples and the shortcomings of its approach during one of the most consequential eras in the long and often troubled history of American Indian and white relations.

Review Southern Exposure / AuthorHouse:

Antarctica. It is a barren wasteland with no natural human inhabitants. Its seasons wane from cold sunlit summers to frigid dark winters that no exposed life form can survive. Its lack of humidity, raging winds and sudden storms create an environment that is almost alien. Who would possibly want to live in such a hostile place? Surprisingly, there is a community of people scattered across Antarctica's icy surface. They live in research stations and field camps and work as scientists, technicians, mechanics, plumbers, cooks, dishwashers and more. Southern Exposure: A Year at McMurdo Station is about the 12 months that Alia Sorensen spent living and working in Antarctica. Filled with first-hand accounts of "life on the Ice," the work, the living conditions, the people she met and the events that held the community together, this book is a step through the looking glass into the United States Antarctic Program. It is a light-hearted, adventurous and educational journey for seasoned travelers and armchair travelers alike, as well as anyone who has ever thought of visiting Antarctica or has already been there.

Review The Correspondence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti 5 : The Chelsea Years, 1863-1872: Prelude to Crisis III. 1871-1872 (Correspondence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti) / D.S.Brewer:

The two years covered in Volume 5, 1871 and 1872, were the most tumultuous of Rossetti's life. His breakdown and attempted suicide in the summer of 1872, a period which Professor Fredeman memorably called "Prelude to the Last Decade," inevitably makes the letters of these months exceptionally poignant, but the volume contains many letters of equal importance for understanding and reassessing Rossetti's life and work. Throughout most of 1871, the success of Poems continued to gratify him, and he was busily engaged in writing new sonnets for The House of Life and a long narrative poem Rose Mary. Commissions from William Graham for The Blessed Damozel and a duplicate of Beata Beatrix allowed him to anticipate continuing financial security. "What delight I have felt in my work lately," he wrote to Alicia Losh in January. In May he became with William Morris a co-tenant of Kelmscott Manor, "a haunt of ancient peace" as he frequently describes it (quoting Tennyson). Living at Kelmscott for long periods meant that he was close to Jane Morris, but often he speaks of the pleasure that he also found in the company of the two Morris daughters. By October, however, the name of Robert Buchanan enters the letters as the likely author of "The Fleshly School of Poetry," and beneath Rossetti's insistence that "the skunk" of his limerick on Buchanan did not deserve to be taken seriously, an alarming unease can be sensed. Comparatively few, and mostly brief, letters survive from the first six months of 1872. Those to his closest friends and to his brother invariably refer to the "Fleshly School," but the tone has darkened. [+]
Following his attempted suicide on 8 June and his departure for Scotland and eventual return to Kelmscott, the letters increase in number and can often impress and surprise the reader. The letters to his beloved mother, one dated as early as 21 June, to Fanny Cornforth and to Ford Madox Brown are both deeply affectionate and studiously considerate, while those to his brother, his agent Charles Augustus Howell.
