Review ANTÓNIO VIEIRA - O FOGO E A ROSA / Editorial Presença:

In this book lies a glimpse into the daring West Coast midget racers who led an early era in auto racing. Readers will learn how hazardous midget racing was in the beginning and how some were attracted to this risky business. Mel Anthony tells what it was like to start his first race in 1946. A select few accomplished drivers would go on to Indy: George Amick, Les Anderson, Bob Christie, Len Sutton, Shorty Templeman, Jack Turner, while the rest did not. In addition to the Indy drivers, cars driven by Chick Barbo, Bob Gregg, Allen Heath, Gordy Livingston, The Muir brothers, Don Olds, Paul Pold, Louie Sherman, Ernie Spalding, Cliff Spalding, and others have been restored, and some appear in vintage events today.

Review Ten Degrees of Reckoning / UTD Press:

This is the true story of a family who fulfilled their lifelong dream¿only to have it evolve into everyone¿s worst nightmare. It takes courage, commitment, passion, and patience to embrace life fully. The Sleavin family, two adults and their two children, possessed those qualities, and realized their dream to sail around the world in their 47-foot boat, the Melinda Lee. They experienced indescribable beauty, rewarding challenges, deep and meaningful encounters, and a wholly shared understanding of the world and of one another during their meticulously planned and crafted out-of-the ordinary family adventure. The author, a veteran sailor herself, uses her personal experience to take the reader on an ocean voyage, and shares the Sleavins¿ travels while she provides a backdrop of intriguing facts and information. Three years into the circumnavigation, not far from the shores of New Zealand, a ship, thousands of tons of steel, loaded with thousands of tons of timber, altered its course by a mere ten degrees, and everything changed. Every, single, thing. Based upon exclusive interviews with the survivor and other significant individuals, the author takes both an investigational and philosophical approach in order to depict the mystery of the tragedy and its aftermath. This is not a book about sailing, although life at sea is re-created with insight and familiarity. This is a universal tale about love and loss, humanity and inhumanity. [+]
This is a story that compels the reader to question and examine one¿s own behavior when circumstances alter the way we live. This is a story about facing our fears and striving to embrace life, every day.

Review / LHiver du grand roi (Louis XIV, T2) Publication date: 2007
Price: $64.95

Review LHiver du grand roi (Louis XIV, T2):

Auteur: Max Gallo, Editeur: Xo, Date de parution: 19/10/2007, ISBN: 284563241X, Illustration: Pas d'illustrations. Hiver 1683. Louis XIV a quarante-cinq ans.

Review The Croul Family Foundation / Dale Velzy Is Hawk Publication date: 2006
Price: $64.94

Review Dale Velzy Is Hawk / The Croul Family Foundation:

This large-format, premium-quality 256-page, hardcover book, with more than 250 photos spanning the legendary surfboard shapers entire life and career, was written by former Surfer Magazine editor Paul Holmes after research that included hundreds of hours of interviews with Hawk himself and dozens of his friends, associates, co-workers and contemporaries. The book is more than just the story of Velzys extraordinary and colorful life, but also that of the development of the entire surf lifestyle and industry. Dale Velzys is a story set in a time and place where a combination of climate, geography, local aerospace industry materials and Hollywoods media machine made California and surfing virtually synonymous. Velzy didnt single-handedly invent the surf lifestyle and industry, but his pioneering work as a craftsman, his charismatic personality and his knack for sales and promotions did much to establish it. Known as Hawk, Velzy cut a colorful figure along the Southern California coast in the late 1950s when he was the worlds largest manufacturer of surfboards. With his diamond pinkie ring, big cigars and fast cars (including a gullwing Mercedes 300SL), he ran around with the Hollywood crowd and counted movie stars and moguls among his clients and friends. Velzy was the epitome of the maverick extreme boardsports entrepreneurjust 30 or 40 years ahead of his time. Velzy led multiple lives: as a great surfer and a fearless lifeguard; as a surf lifestyle pioneer and surfboard design innovator; as an avid Western horseman, occasional working cowboy and saddle maker; as a bow-hunter and marksman; as a hot-rodder and biker; as a gregarious socializer and barbecue wizard. Surfing and the surf industry as they exist today couldnt have developed without individuals as talented, determined, and downright unconventional as Dale Velzy. Through the prism of his extraordinary life, this book shows how it happened.
