Review A Gay Couple's Journey Through Surrogacy: Intended Fathers / Routledge:A deeply personal account of the trials and tribulations of the surrogacy journey! Surrogacy’s been coldly and unjustifiably called "baby buying" and "baby selling" and many states have banned it. But those insensitive terms do not tell the inspiring tale of a couple fiercely wanting to become parents. A Gay Couple’s Experience with Surrogacy: Intended Fathers is the moving true story of a gay couple’s decision to have their child through a surrogate mother. With humor and emotion, the author traces their intense experience from the initial decision to have a child through surrogacy on through the entire pregnancy and birth. A Gay Couple's Journey Through Surrogacy chronicles this couple’s no-holds-barred account of the emotional toll, the legal matters, the financial concerns, and the ultimate fulfillment of parenting a child. A Gay Couple's Journey Through Surrogacy reveals the author’s answers to these questions: why surrogacy over adoption? which type of surrogacy—traditional or gestational? what were the issues when choosing a surrogate? how much does surrogacy cost? what living expenses are included in the cost? what are the emotional and financial reasons that surrogates choose to bear another’s child? what are the pitfalls in choosing surrogacy? what are the legal issues—what to beware and what to consider An excerpt: Before I knew it, I was writing an ad of my own, and I actually posted it. David, of course, had no idea what I was up to. The ad read: "We’re a gay couple in New York that just celebrated our fourteenth anniversary and we’ve decided to extend our family. We’re looking for someone close by and even have a separate apartment available if needed. " Nice, huh? Could it be just a little bit more. [+]
vague? Could my ad have lacked a little more personality? Sure, have our baby and move right in while you’re doing it! Who the hell would respond to that? I wasn’t even sure after reading it myself that it made any sense. But what should I have said? What could I have said? I scrambled to find a way to delete it, but couldn’t. A Gay Couple's Journey Through Surrogacy is a touching memoir that reveals the challenges that face gay and lesbian couples who may be considering either adoption or surrogacy.

Review Regina's Record / Xlibris Corporation:REGINA'S RECORD is a uniquely powerful, thought-provoking, narrative about a resilient, feisty woman whose quality of life was destroyed by the horrific treatment she endured during 32 long years in the American VA psychiatric system. Regina Van Amber is the unfortunate schizophrenic whose story was culled from more than 13,000 government records (which took 7 years to be released) and is graphically recreated over 256 pages by Regina's son, James Anthony Van Amber of Mankato, Minnesota. Told with a dispassionate, yet touching and unforgettable poignancy, REGINA'S RECORD makes superlative reading. Juxtaposed against his mother's relentless trauma, is the story of James' own tortured development involving deep feelings of hurt, confusion, personal abandonment, self-doubt, isolation, sexual and emotional failure, low self-worth and acute peer pressure. The absence of a father and denial of his existence by his own mother, meant that the story is a modern tragedy spiced with dry wit and a welcome dash of wry humour to ease the obvious tension and catalogue of harrowing incidents.

Review Ronald Reagan: Fate, Freedom, and the Making of History / Blackstone Audio Inc.:Following his departure from office, Ronald Reagan was marginalized from public interest. But like Lincoln, who was also attacked for decades after his death, Reagan deserves to be regarded as one of our greatest presidents, an exemplar of true conservative values. In this bold and philosophical reevaluation, Diggins reveals that Reagan was a far more active and sophisticated president than we ever knew. His negotiations with Mikhail Gorbachev and his opposition to foreign interventions demonstrate that he was not a rigid hawk. In his pursuit of Emersonian ideals and distrust of big government, he was an open-minded libertarian, combining a reverence for America's hallowed historical traditions with an implacable faith in the limitless opportunities of the future.

Review The Iconography of Sir Isaac Newton to 1800 / Boydell Press:Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) is rare among figures of the past for the number of authentic paintings, engravings and images of him which survive. He was painted by some nine different artists in the latter part of his life, and after his death both portraits and sculptures continued to proliferate, the amazing demand for representations of his image demonstrating his immense fame. This iconography, lavishly illustrated in both colour and black and white, and involving the disciplines of History of Art and History of Science, catalogues 231 icons in two sections, and is thus an invaluable guide to the images. Part I contains 122 portraits and Part II 109 sculptures, about fifty of which were produced before his death, the rest from then until 1800.

Review Restless Soul, Parts I & II / Trafford Publishing:This is the story of Reverend Charles Harrison Bell (1912-1993), reaching back to his ancestors in the UK, to his early New Zealand settler forebears, and to the lives he touched as a church man, a family man and - a pig farmer. The impact of his evangelist, strong work ethic and impecunious heritage is striking. He was a restless soul, his life one of conflict, torn between farming and the ministry. He chose what he thought was the higher calling but was it - ever - the right path for him? He was continually led astray by the dream of having his own land and his own animals. His parishioners didn't share his dream and he achieved notoriety not popularity as a Reverend Farmer. His commitment was questioned and top appointments in the church eluded him which inflamed his self doubt. As a compassionate, good man, he was a successful pastor, but as a high flyer in the church he was not. His wife came from a wealthy family of successful businessmen and her husband's pitiable earnings and his struggle to succeed both dismayed and touched her. Her own life was marked by tragedy and his by disappointment but they always stood together. Dad was kind hearted, gentle and loving - and always well meaning. [+]
Through a combination of sometimes delightful and sometimes dismal naivety, and more than his fair share of bad luck, the tales of his life are often hilarious, often tender, often sad. He wrote a lot and thought a lot. Behind his innate shyness, he felt a lot. This is the extraordinary story of a very ordinary man.

Review To Change the World: My Years in Cuba / Rutgers University Press:In To Change the World, the legendary writer and poet Margaret Randall chronicles her decade in Cuba from 1969 to 1980. Both a highly personal memoir and an examination of the revolution's great achievements and painful mistakes, the book paints a portrait of the island during a difficult, dramatic, and exciting time. Randall gives readers an inside look at her children's education, the process through which new law was enacted, the ins and outs of healthcare, employment, internationalism, culture, and ordinary people's lives. She explores issues of censorship and repression, describing how Cuban writers and artists faced them. She recounts one of the country's last beauty pageants, shows us a night of People's Court, and takes us with her when she shops for her family's food rations. Key figures of the revolution appear throughout, and Randall reveals aspects of their lives never before seen. More than fifty black and white photographs, most by the author, add depth and richness to this astute and illuminating memoir. Written with a poet's ear, depicted with a photographer's eye, and filled with a feminist vision, To Change the World-neither an apology nor gratuitous attack-adds immensely to the existing literature on revolutionary Cuba.
