Review 36 Views of Mount Fuji: On Finding Myself in Japan / Duke University Press:

In 1980 Cathy N. Davidson traveled to Japan to teach English at a leading all-women’s university. It was the first of many journeys and the beginning of a deep and abiding fascination. In this extraordinary book, Davidson depicts a series of intimate moments and small epiphanies that together make up a panoramic view of Japan. With wit, candor, and a lover’s keen eye, she tells captivating stories—from that of a Buddhist funeral laden with ritual to an exhilarating evening spent touring the “Floating World,” the sensual demimonde in which salaryman meets geisha and the normal rules are suspended. On a remote island inhabited by one of the last matriarchal societies in the world, a disconcertingly down-to-earth priestess leads her to the heart of a sacred grove. And she spends a few unforgettable weeks in a quasi-Victorian residence called the Practice House, where, until recently, Japanese women were taught American customs so that they would make proper wives for husbands who might be stationed abroad. In an afterword new to this edition, Davidson tells of a poignant trip back to Japan in 2005 to visit friends who had remade their lives after the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995, which had devastated the city of Kobe, as well as the small town where Davidson had lived and the university where she taught. 36 Views of Mount Fuji not only transforms our image of Japan, it offers a stirring look at the very nature of culture and identity. Often funny, sometimes liltingly sad, it is as intimate and irresistible as a long-awaited letter from a good friend.

Review The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan / Blackstone Audio, Inc.:

In 1913, a young, unschooled Indian clerk wrote a letter to G. H. Hardy, begging that pre-eminent English mathematician's opinion on several ideas he had about numbers. Hardy, realizing the letter was the work of a genius, arranged for Srinivasa Ramanujan to come to England. Thus began one of the most remarkable collaborations ever chronicled. With a passion for rich and evocative detail, Robert Kanigel takes us from the temples and teeming slums of Madras to the courts and chapels of Cambridge University, where the devout Hindu Ramanujan, "the Prince of Intuition," tested his brilliant theories alongside the sophisticated and eccentric Hardy, "the Apostle of Proof. " In time, Ramanujan's creative intensity took its toll: he died at the age of thirty-two, but left behind a magical and inspired legacy that today is still being plumbed for its secrets.

Review From Survival to Significance ... a Journey / Dar Akhbar Al Khaleej:

This book is about an ordinary person who became extra-ordinary not by doing different things, but by doing things differently. It is a description of a life journey that has had plenty of unexpected twists, turns, and rough terrain. This person had dogged determination to reach the summit. He crossed all the hurdles cheerfully and eventually succeeded. Abdulla Nass, the founder of Nass Group of companies, was born in Bahrain in a middle-class family. Story of his meteoric rise from a modest background is motivational and inspiring. Abdulla's life has one special dimension besides 'Success,' and that is 'Significance. ' 'Significance' is much wider than 'Success. ' It is a stage where one becomes more interested in service, in contributing to the welfare of the society and in searching real meaning of life and purpose of one's existence. In addition to being a biography, this book is also an exercise in modelling excellence and dynamic entrepeneurship, qualities that are hallmarks of Abdulla Nass. [+]
It looks 'beyond the visible and discernible. ' The author talks about hierarchy of neurological levels and psychological factors that determine our beliefs, thought-processes and capabilities, which trigger certain behavioural patterns; in short, everything that effectively drives our destiny. The author has attempted to add value to the book by verbalising Abdulla's life practices and presenting them in a generalized form, which he calls 'GEMs,' or 'Guidelines for Entrepeneurs & Managers. ' These GEMs are answers to some of the common doubts confronted by Entrepeneurs and Managers in their careers. In a collective form, GEMs could therefore serve as a tool-kit for budding managers and entrepeneurs. Being successful need not be the 'end all and be all' of our lifes. In our journey, how we reach our destination is more important than reaching the destination itself. Abdulla's life story can serve as a guide and a road map in this endeavour.

Review The Regal Way: The Life and Times of Rabbi Israel of Ruzhin (Stanford Studies in Jewish History and C) / Stanford University Press:

This is a pioneering study of the nineteenth century Hasidic movement as shown through the life of one of the most controversial and influential Hasidic leaders, Rabbi Israel Friedman of Ruzhin (1796-1850). The dramatic episodes of his life—including his involvement in the murder of Jewish informers, his imprisonment in Russia, his subsequent escape to Austria where he successfully reestablished his court—are echoed by the contradictory and highly critical opinions of his personal character and his role as leader of one of the largest and most opulent Hasidic courts of the nineteenth century. Nineteenth-century Hasidism has been a comparatively neglected topic in Jewish historiography largely because of the traditional view that the movement was in a degenerate state during this period. The natural interest that scholars found in the eighteenth-century origins of the movement, alongside their personal dislike of the nineteenth-century Hasidic courts and their machinations, led them to concentrate on the earliest years and the more recent phases of Hasidism. The book is in four parts. Part I draws on surprisingly rich non-Hasidic sources as well as on Hasidic materials to recreate the early life of Rabbi Israel from his childhood to his leadership of a Hasidic community. Part II concentrates on his activities as a famous spiritual leader, his adventures in Russia, and his final years in Austria. In Part III, the author analyzes major aspects of Rabbi Israel’s career and thought as a Hasidic leader and public figure, with emphasis on his approach to materialism, wealth, and luxury. Part IV describes in detail the royal Hasidic court of Rabbi Israel and his sons—its formation, buildings, economics, social structure, functionaries, and administrative organization.

Review Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Meth Addiction / Playaway:

What had happened to my beautiful boy? To our family? What did I do wrong? Those are the wrenching questions that haunted every moment of David Sheff's journey through his son Nic's addiction to drugs and tentative steps toward recovery. Before Nic Sheff became addicted to crystal meth, he was a charming boy, joyous and funny, a varsity athlete and honor student adored by his two younger siblings. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who lied, stole, and lived on the streets. David Sheff traces the first subtle warning signs: the denial, the 3 A. M. phone calls (is it Nic? the police? the hospital?), the rehabs. His preoccupation with Nic became an addiction in itself, and the obsessive worry and stress took a tremendous toll. But as a journalist, he instinctively researched every avenue of treatment that might save his son and refused to give up on Nic. Beautiful Boy is a fiercely candid memoir that brings immediacy to the emotional rollercoaster of loving a child who seems beyond help. Amazon Best of the Month, February 2008: From as early as grade school, the world seemed to be on Nic Sheff's string. [+]
Bright and athletic, he excelled in any setting and appeared destined for greatness. Yet as childhood exuberance faded into teenage angst, the precocious boy found himself going down a much different path. Seduced by the illicit world of drugs and alcohol, he quickly found himself caught in the clutches of addiction. Beautiful Boy is Nic's story, but from the perspective of his father, David. Achingly honest, it chronicles the betrayal, pain, and terrifying question marks that haunt the loved ones of an addict. Many respond to addiction with a painful oath of silence, but David Sheff opens up personal wounds to reinforce that it is a disease, and must be treated as such. Most importantly, his journey provides those in similar situations with a commodity that they can never lose: hope -Dave Callanan.
