Review Mina's Story: A Doctor's Memoir of the Holocaust / Ecw Press:

In this compelling personal memoir of courage and endurance, Dr. Mina Deutsch reveals her memories of living in the shadow of the Holocaust. Mina Kimmel left her home town in Poland at age 13 to pursue an education. Settling in Czechoslovakia Mina met Leon Deutsch, a fellow medical student who would become her husband. The young couple's happy life, however, was soon torn apart by the rise of the Nazi regime. Mina's Story follows their journey eastward through Nazi-occupied Europe. Finally liberated by the Russians after having to hide in an underground bunker, Dr. Deutsch's narrative continues in Canada, where Mina and Leon again have to struggle to establish themselves in a new and foreign country. Mina's Story is a memorial to all those who died under Nazi persecution, a record of the many atrocities suffered, and, finally, an example of heroism, perseverance, and the indestructible will to live.

Review Hungry Hill: A Memoir / University of Massachusetts Press:

On a sweltering June night in 1959, Betty O’Malley died from lymphatic cancer, leaving behind an alcoholic husband and eight shell-shocked children—seven sons and one daughter, ranging in age from two to fifteen years. The daughter, Carole, was thirteen at the time. In this poignant memoir, she recalls in vivid detail the chaotic course of her family life over the next four years. The setting for the story is Hungry Hill, an Irish-Catholic working-class neighborhood in Springfield, Massachusetts. Grief-stricken over his wife’s death, Joe O’Malley, a mid-level executive at an insurance company, spends his nights on the living room sofa listening to the sentimental ballads of Frank Sinatra, a tumbler of whiskey always nearby. At first Carole struggles to pull her father back from his world of teary, booze-soaked memories. Slipping into her mother’s role, she "holds the fort" and works at keeping her seven brothers in line, straining to give the shaky household a semblance of normalcy, while also trying to keep her own dreams alive. She is drawn to the high school world of dances, academic honors, and the excitement of her first kiss, but the weight of apprehension for her family sets her apart from that carefree social scene. Fifteen months after his wife’s death, Joe takes a new wife—Mary Ford, a bristling and difficult woman. While Joe passes off Mary’s outbreaks of rage and physical abuse as "nerves," the short-lived marriage turns into an endless merry-go-round of cocktail parties and hotel bars. [+]
Before long, Joe’s health collapses and he dies, leaving his children orphaned for the second time. Carole O’Malley Gaunt recounts this sad story with remarkable clarity, humor, and insight. The narrative is punctuated by occasional fictional scenes that allow the adult Carole to comment on her teenage experiences and to probe the impact of her mother’s death and her father’s alcoholism.

Review Memoirs of the Comtesse Du Barry, With Minute Details of Her Entire Career As Favorite of Louis XV / IndyPublish.com:

Jeanne Bécu, Comtesse du Barry (Marie-Jeanne, Comtesse du Barry) (1743-1793) was a French courtesan who became the mistress of Louis XV of France and is one of the most famous victims of the Reign of Terror. She first served as courtesan to Louis François Armand du Plessis, duc de Richelieu. Marie-Jeanne, however, could not qualify as an official royal mistress unless she had a title; this was solved by her marriage to Du Barry's brother, Comte Guillaume du Barry, in 1769. She was presented to the King's family and the court on April 2, 1769. At the King's request before his death in May 1774, she was banished from the court, as her amoral presence would have prevented the king from receiving absolution. In 1792 she was suspected of giving financial aid to emigres from the French Revolution. After a trial, she was executed by guillotine on the Place de la Concorde on December 8, 1793. Her Memoirs were written by the French Baron, Etienne Léon Lamothe-Langon (1786-1864) and were first published in English in 1903.

Review Pieter Isaacsz (1568-1625): Court Painter, Art Dealer and Spy / Brepols Publishers:

The Danish-born painter of Dutch descent Pieter Isaacsz (1569-1625) represents one of the more colourful figures of early modern art history. He is chiefly known today as a court painter in the service of King Christian IV of Denmark, but he is perhaps even more extraordinary as an art trader, agent of the Dutch States General, and spy in the service of Denmark's arch-enemy, the Swedish Realm. Moreover, Pieter Isaacsz introduced several Netherlandish artists to the Danish court. As a result of his efforts, Pieter Lastman, Adriaen van Nieulandt, Werner van der Valckert and others received assignments from King Christian, making Pieter Isaacsz a bridge builder between the Dutch Republic and Denmark. In sixteen in-depth articles, the authors explore his travels with Hans von Aachen, his years in Rome, Amsterdam and later at the Danish court, his network including Karel van Mander and Hans Vredeman de Vries, the characteristics of his work, his role in international politics, and more. This richly illustrated publication, including an innovative catalogue, contains contributions from Danish, Dutch, German and American scholars, casting a new light on Pieter Isaacsz as the artist of many merits, while at the same time offering a unique insight into Northern European relations in art around 1600.
