Robert Turner was born in 1943 to Irene and Rudolph Turner in Chicago, Illinois. He was the oldest of five children. In 1963, he married Mary Tucker, and later fathered two daughters, Tina and Jennifer. He worked as a machinist since he was 18 years old, until he purchased a small grocery store in Wisconsin in 1983. After losing the store in 1986, he relocated his family to Milwaukee where he worked as a machinist and climbed the ladder from laborer to plant manager in just a few years. In April, 2001, he lost everything he ever worked for because his wife embezzled more than $1. 2 million from the company she worked for. Today he is telling his story.

Review Journey to the Promised Land: Through the Valleys to the Mountain Top / Xlibris Corporation:

Born in the twenties and raised by loving religious parents in a hermetically sealed ivory tower, Andrea was plunged into a world of lies, envy, jealousy and hatred not long after her mother's sudden death. A teenager, she was crushed and confounded by her stepmother's abuse. Through her stepmother's methodical brainwashing and diabolical lying, her younger siblings turned on her, as did her father. Several years later an embittered atheist, Andrea was still unable to assert herself, still naive and trusting. And made to order for the master of abuse, her husband. In middle age she was stricken with a debilitating and excruciatingly painful disease. Through the years Andrea had explored philosophy, psychology and parapsychology, looking for answers. She found none. Not sure if God existed, in desperation she called out to Him, and to her everlasting exultation, she found the Promised Land!.

Review Hiram Johnson: A Bio-Bibliography (Bio-Bibliographies in Law and Political Science) / Greenwood Press:

As a bio-bibliographical sketch of Johnson, this work is divided into two sections. It begins with a biographical sketch of Johnson's political career; this provides a perspective on California's progressive era, the League of Nations controversy, the Great Depression and the New Deal, the controversy over the reorganization of the Supreme Court, and preparation for World War II. Quotations from Johnson's major speeches, newspaper accounts of his campaigns, and excerpts from personal letters are included. The biographical sketch is followed by an annotated bibliography that is divided into a collection of selected works mentioning Johnson, articles written by him, and a collection of important speeches taken from the Congressional Record.

Review A Life Looking Forward: Memoirs of an Independent Marxist / Zed Books:

Samir Amin, one of the twentieth century's leading radical intellectuals, has lived his personal and political life at the intersection of various cultures and international progressive currents - from Egypt to France to West Africa, from communism to national-liberation socialism, Maoism and finally a mature anti-imperialism.   His memoirs are not only a fascinating personal narrative but a penetrating historical-political analysis,  as well as an introduction to his most important theoretical contributions.   They offer a unique vantage point for observing the operations of global capitalism and the evolution, crises and potentialities of radical movements, especially in the third world. This book will be invaluable not only to readers interested in Amin's profoundly influential work or in the history of the global left but to anyone concerned with today's worldwide struggles against capitalist globalization.

Review Iran Awakening: From Prison to Peace Prize: One Woman's Struggle at the Crossroads of History / Vintage Canada:

The moving, inspiring memoir of one of the great women of our times, Shirin Ebadi, winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize and advocate for the oppressed, whose spirit has remained strong in the face of political persecution and despite the challenges she has faced raising a family while pursuing her work. Best known in this country as the lawyer working tirelessly on behalf of Canadian photojournalist, Zara Kazemi – raped, tortured and murdered in Iran – Dr. Ebadi offers us a vivid picture of the struggles of one woman against the system. The book movingly chronicles her childhood in a loving, untraditional family, her upbringing before the Revolution in 1979 that toppled the Shah, her marriage and her religious faith, as well as her life as a mother and lawyer battling an oppressive regime in the courts while bringing up her girls at home. Outspoken, controversial, Shirin Ebadi is one of the most fascinating women today. She rose quickly to become the first female judge in the country; but when the religious authorities declared women unfit to serve as judges she was demoted to clerk in the courtroom she had once presided over. She eventually fought her way back as a human rights lawyer, defending women and children in politically charged cases that most lawyers were afraid to represent. She has been arrested and been the target of assassination, but through it all has spoken out with quiet bravery on behalf of the victims of injustice and discrimination and become a powerful voice for change, almost universally embraced as a hero. Her memoir is a gripping story – a must-read for anyone interested in Zara Kazemi’s case, in the life of a remarkable woman, or in understanding the political and religious upheaval in our world. From the Hardcover edition.

Review My Life's Journey: Reflections of an Academic / World Scientific Publishing Company:

Dr Wai-Fah Chen - a Chinese-born American academic and widely recognized structural engineering specialist in the field of mechanics, materials, and computing - has certainly led a fascinating life. A well-respected leader in the field of plasticity, structural stability, and structural steel design over the past half-century, he has made major contributions to introduce the mathematical theory of plasticity to civil engineering practice, especially in the application of limit analysis methods to the geotechnical engineering field. Having headed the engineering departments at the University of Hawaii and Purdue University, Chen is a widely cited author and the recipient of several national engineering awards, including the 1990 Shortridge Hardesty Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers and the 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Steel Construction. This book traces the life journey and reflections of Dr Chen. It presents a remarkable opportunity to understand his personal history and cultural passions: his struggle to achieve the American dream, his life as an eyewitness to the rise of China, and his career path to establish a solid engineering reputation. Presenting his scientific achievements spanning the last 40 years of his career, readers will thus be privy to his personal thoughts, experiences, and perspectives on these events.
