Review Sense of the World: How a Blind Man Became History's Greatest Traveler {Unabridged} {Audio} {Cd}:

Adult/High SchoolAn engaging account of a most undeservedly obscure figure. The book itself is a fortuitous happenstance; had a certain volume not caught Robertss eye during a wander break through the stacks on a library visit, the story of Lieutenant James Holman, known to his contemporaries as the Blind Traveler, might still be lost to a modern audience. Born in 1786, Holman began service in the British navy at the age of 12. The rigorous lifestyle ravaged him physically; by age 20, pain had left him nearly incapacitated; five years later, he was blind, ill, and strapped for funds. Holman pursued a coursetravelthat proved the best remedy. The Blind Traveler traversed the globe, encountering a plethora of colorful characters and gaining short-lived fame, if not fortune, from his narratives and memoirs. Roberts re-creates each journey, both geographical and physiological, providing insights into 18th-century beliefs, mores, and worldly knowledge, along with a ghastly array of cures inflicted on Holman by practitioners of medicine. The admiration and respect that the author feels for his subject are unmistakable, but in no way diminish the accomplishments of the most restless man in history. Black-and-white reproductions show Holman as he was depicted by contemporaries during his travels. This volume is an obvious addition to any number of booklists, from biographies to nonfiction that reads like fiction. [+]

Review Jabo's Boy - Now His Manchild / PublishAmerica:

“I was born in the midst of the farm environment in the black idiom. The back-wooded country of St. Luke, on Rt. 1, Ozan in southwest Arkansas. As a child, in this environment, I was exposed to many realistic experiences and expressions that have not been forgotten; the singing, praying and shouting, the infinite love and strength that I felt among my people— my Race. Hunting rabbits, gathering pecans, mending fences for the cattle and, of course, picking cotton and hauling hay. I recall the smell of hay mown in July, and hearing the sounds of deep tone bells of the black church for a funeral, or simply gathering for Sunday school or regular service. These memories could have very well been forgotten in time but such memories have been the motivation behind my ‘art’ as in the painting entitled, Evolution of the Blues. ”.

Review Journal of a Slave-Dealer: A Living History of the Slave Trade (Kegan Paul Africa Library) / Kegan Paul:

This is a classic early account of the slave trade, taken from a journal kept by a young Irishman who crewed on the trans-Atlantic slave ships and became a trader on the West African coast. Covering the years 1746-1757, it was written before humanitarian feeling turned public opinion turned against slavery, and is notable for its matter-of-fact approach to what was then seen simply as another form of commerce. Its particular value lies in the light it throws on the Europeans involved in the slave trade - how they became involved in it, their role in the trading process, and their way of life at trading posts on the treacherous African coast. Owen provides valuable early descriptions of local African tribes such as the Mandingos, and detailed accounts of trade goods and how they were obtained and exchanged. The journal provides important insights into the European connection with the West African coast, and the vigorous, simple style in which this living history is written is reminiscent of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe.

Dewey code: 920

Review The Horsieman: Memoirs of a Traveller / Birlinn Publishers:

Duncan Williamson was the son, grandson, and great-grandson of nomadic tinsmiths, basket makers, pipers, and storytellers. In this book he describes his life as a traveler with verve, candour, and intimacy, recounting a childhood spent on the shores of Loch Fyne, work on the small hill farms in the summer, and walking with barrows and prams and, later, with horse and cart, the length and breadth of Scotland. He recalls camping with hundreds of traveler families from the 1940s to the 1960s, his marriage to his cousin, Jeanie Townsley, and all the various traditional skills and arts that must be perfected for a man to maintain his family adequately. The Horsieman is also the story of traditions long vanished-of traveler trades, of building tents, of routes traveled, and traditional camping sites, as well as of stories, songs, music, and cures that have been the heritage and tradition of traveling people in Scotland through the ages. Set in Argyll, Tayside, and all stations in between, Duncan Williamson's story is told with great warmth and humor and in the inimitable style of one Scotland's master storytellers.

Review Growing Up on the Illinois Prairie During the Great Depression And the Coal Mine Wars: A Portrayal of the Way Life Was / Edwin Mellen Press:

Earl Hutchison has written a beguiling yet incisive memoir of growing up in a small town in central Illinois in the 1930s. Writing in a casual and engaging way, the author evokes a past that was pastoral and idyllic for a young boy, yet at the same time somber and precarious for his family and community because of the deprivations of the Depression and ominous tensions of the coal-mining dangers and disputes that haunted his family. The times were hard and challenging, but the people we meet reflect some of the best traits of the American character - tough, resilient, adaptive, and, above all, caring about their family and their community.
