Review Soul Power: Born into Submission and Defeat she reached for the Stars and found the Light / iUniverse, Inc.:Australian writer Anna Morten was born into a deeply troubled post-war Germany. The result of an unwanted pregnancy and family rejection, she lived a despondent childhood experiencing sexual abuse, rape and prostitution under Russian military occupation. She endured a terrifying escape from the other side of the Berlin Wall, a tyrannical stepfather, a teenage marriage to an Arab with years of confinement, an adventurous rescue from an Islamic country, and more harrowing challenges. Trapped in irresolvable conflict, she discovered Australia. When her second marriage failed and her teenage daughter became a drug addicted street kid, Anna experienced a crisis that threatened to destroy her seemingly unbreakable spirit. At this point she "meets" TAREEN, a Divine Being from the Higher Realm of Light. He continues to teach her the basic facts about the Purpose of Life, the Spiritual Principles, Karma, the Concept of Reincarnation, and allows her glimpses into the future. Anna's story gives a remarkable account of self-discovery and inner growth, of spiritual awakening and universal awareness. [+]

Review Life on Air / Chivers Audio Books:Sir David Attenborough is Britain's best-known natural history film-maker. His career as a naturalist and broadcaster has spanned nearly five decades and there are very few places on the globe that he has not visited. In this volume of memoirs David tells stories of the people and animals he has met and the places that he has visited. Sir David's first job - after Cambridge University and two years in the Royal Navy - was at the London publishing house Hodder & Stoughton. Then in 1952 he joined the BBC as a trainee producer and it was while working on the "Zoo Quest" series (1954-64) that he had his first opportunity to undertake expeditions to remote parts of the globe to capture intimate footage of rare wildlife in its natural habitat. He was Controller of BBC2 (1965-68), during which time he introduced colour television to Britain, then Director of Programmes for the BBC (1969-1972). However in 1973 he abandoned administration altogether to return to documentary-making and writing. Over the last 25 years he has established himself as the World's leading Natural History programme maker with several landmark BBC series, including "Life on Earth" (1979), "The Living Planet" (1984), "The Trials of Life" (1990), "The Private Life of Plants" (1995) and "Life of Birds" (1998).

Review Golden Bats And Pink Pigeons / Ulverscroft Large Print:'On this speck of volcanic soil in the middle of a vast sea, a complete, unique and peaceful world was created slowly and carefully. It waited there for hundreds of thousands of years for an annihilating invasion of voracious animals for which it was totally unprepared, a cohort of rapacious beasts led by the worst predator in the world, Homo sapiens- In an incredibly short space of time, a number of unique species had vanished-' Mauritius, the green and mountainous island in the Indian Ocean, was once the home of the ill-fated dodo, and by the 1970s it still had many unique but endangered species, hanging onto their existence by their fingernails. When Gerald Durrell went to rescue some of these creatures from extinction, he experienced danger and discomfort, but enjoyed the adventures greatly. He spent nights in the jungle looking for bats and pink pigeons, and climbed near-vertical rock faces to find Telfair's skinks and Gunther's geckos, spending his spare time exploring the enchanted worlds of the coral reefs with their many species of multicoloured fish. By the end of his trip, he had an extraordinary collection of animals to take to his Jersey sanctuary from where the progeny could, in time, be restored to Mauritius.

Review Memories of Afghanistan / Carlton Pr:The captivating, true story of one who fought for a modern, secular Afghanistan. Mohammad Haider Anwar traces his development from street urchin and petty thief in the slums of Kabul, to idealistic teenager swayed by the writings of Tom Paine, to government official espousing reform in a deeply patriarchal, religious society. In 1943, facing imprisonment by the Afghan monarchy–in part for refusing to force his American-born wife to wear the chaderi, or head-to-toe veil–Dr. Anwar fled into exile. This second edition of Memories of Afghanistan includes a new Afterward that discusses the American government’s role in strengthening Islamic fundamentalism and tribal backwardness in Afghanistan over the past 25 years.

Review Music and Psychology: From Vienna to London, 1939-52 (Hans Keller Archive) / Plumbago Books:For three or four decades after the Second World War, musical thinking in Britain was dominated by psychology. Among the earliest of the musical Freudians was Hans Keller (1919-85), an émigré from Vienna. For his case studies Keller drew on composers, performers, listeners and critics; and for his general topics he turned to opera, film music, creative character, genius, aesthetics and the issues of everyday musical life. The writing is impressive for its novelty, its insights, and the communicative clarity of its prose. The book includes a large number of aphorisms, two stories and a one-act play on British anti-Semitism. Most of the writings appear here in print for the first time and are drawn from papers held in the Hans Keller Archive at the University Library in Cambridge.

Review With Lawrence in Arabia / Kessinger Publishing:1924. Original Photographs taken by H. A. Chase and by the Author. Lowell Thomas began as a reporter for the Chicago Evening Journal. Inspired by the growing art of documentary film, Thomas set off to film the war in Europe with his wife and cameraman, Harry Chase. Depressed by the brutality of the war on the Western Front they headed for the Middle East where they would meet the man who would make them famous, Captain Lawrence. Allegedly Lawrence was introduced to Thomas as the Uncrowned King of Arabia. Thomas and Chase were invited to Feisal's desert camp where they shot moving and still pictures of Lawrence with the Arabs. The romantic and adventurous tales of this mysterious blue-eyed Arab in the garb of prince wandering the streets was a hit. [+]
