Review ICNP and Telematic Applications for Nurses in Europe (Studies in Health Technology and Informatics) / IOS Press:International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) functions as a common language for nursing in Europe. It is developed as a common nomenclature and classification system, reflecting the specific clinical realities of nursing practice. Telenurse promotes the use of ICNP in Europe according to a double strategy involving the following approaches; 1) organisation of dissemination conferences on a European level and dissemination meetings on a national level. 2. Building of simple demonstrators illustrating possible real uses of ICNP in shared electronic patient records. Telenurse has focused on two aspects of the use of ICNP in electronic records. Firstly, entry of ICNP data in relation to daily systematic documentation of nursing care and secondly, statistical analysis of ICNP data extracted from the electronic patient records in relation to the development of clinical quality and resource management. In relation to the DataIn phase Telenurse spans both streams within the group of projects concerned with electronic patient records, viz. the stream concerned with the architecture of electronic patient records and the stream concerned with the architecture of terminology's. In relation to the DataOut phase the small scale demonstrators of electronic patient records have been equipped with data extraction mechanisms for clinical databases. [+]
These developments have been supplemented by software showing how the results of the analysis of data stored in the databases can be fed back to clinical practice using electronic means.

Review Cell Apoptosis Research Progress / Nova Science Publishers:Apoptosis is the regulated form of cell death. It is a complex process defined by a set of characteristic morphological and biochemical features that involves the active participation of affected cells in a self-destruction cascade. This programmed cell death plays a critical role in physiological functions such as cell deletion during embryonic development, balancing cell number in continuously renewing tissues and immune system development. Additionally, a dysregulation of apoptosis is underlying in numerous pathological situations such as Parkinson, Alzheimer's disease and cancer. A number of studies have pointed out an association between consumption of fruits and vegetables, and certain beverages such as tea and wine, which are rich in polyphenols, with reduced risk of chronic diseases, including cancer. Apoptosis is also the regulatory mechanism involved in the removal of unnecessary cells during development and in tissue homeostasis in a wide range of organisms from insects to mammals.

Review Designing Usability Into Medical Products / CRC:Advocating a user-centered approach to medical technology design, Designing Usability into Medical Products covers the essential processes and specific techniques necessary to produce safe, effective, usable, and appealing medical systems and products. Written by experts on user-centered research, design, and evaluation, the book provides a range of alternative approaches to the subject. Wiklund and Wilcox explore how to make medical devices safe and effective by involving users in the design process. They discuss specific design and evaluation methods and tools, present case studies of user-friendly medical technologies and corporate human factors programs, and supply related resources for medical design professionals. The book conveys an in-depth understanding of the user-centered design process, covers design methods for FDA compliance, and offers guidance on performing a variety of hands-on user research, user interface design, and user interface evaluation. The authors make a compelling case for treating the user's needs and preferences as a top design priority, rather than an afterthought. They demonstrate that high-quality customer interactions with systems and products leads to effective medical diagnosis and treatment, increases the physical and mental well being of patients and caregivers, and leads to commercial success in a crowded marketplace.

Review Integration of Health Telematics into Medical Practice (Studies in Health Technology and Informatics,) / IOS Press:This book addresses very different subjects from research to practice, from medicine to information technology and from medical informatics issues. In most of the European countries, the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia, telemedicine is already one of the columns that keeps the health care system under control in terms of cost saving and quality assurance. This is reflected by significant funding from the governments of many of these countries, which are more than ever under a huge pressure to keep their health care systems alive. However, telemedicine has not yet reached mainstream medicine. The interest of scientists in addressing the issue of the impact of telemedicine on contemporary practices in medicine is still limited. Proper outcomes research on the effectivenes of telemedical applications would speed the implementation of telemedicine in contemporary practice. This is what makes this publication so valid.

Review Biomechanical Models of Hand Coupling for Axial Torque and Push Exertions / VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller e.K.:Sufficient axial torque and push must be applied with the hands to perform many activities of work, daily living and recreation. Slippage between the hands and work object can result in failure to complete the task and hand injuries. Also, repeated forceful exertions can result in fatigue, damage to the body, and cumulative trauma disorders. This dissertation aims to develop and evaluate biomechanical models that describe axial torque and push on a cylindrical handle in relation to contact force distribution, hand-handle friction, handle size, and the force application direction. In addition, a simple method for measuring hand static friction coefficients proposed in this dissertation can be easily used in the field in a timely manner by ergonomics practitioners or product designers to design more efficient and safer work objects. These findings in this dissertation can be implemented into the design of work objects to reduce required muscle activities for tasks that involve axial torque and push exertion, and thus reduce injuries from hand slippage and the risk of fatigue and musculoskeletal disorders.

Review UB-04 Handbook for Hospital Billing, with Answer Key: A Reference and Training Tool for Efficient Operations in Health Care Facilities / American Hospital Association:The first textbook that helps HIM professionals and students understand the differences between the UB-04 and the UB-92 and provides a global view of how the billing function should work in conjunction with the coding department. The Handbook provides accurate and timely information about the UB-04 and explains how and why ICD-9, CPT and HCPCS code conventions must be integrated with UB-04, HCFA-1450 and CMS-1450 billing conventions. The book can be used to teach an individual how to complete a facility UB-04 billing form, and contains vignettes that explain the billing office process, its components and reporting nuances. It will help HIM staff understand that coding conventions for billing are as important as ICD-9 coding conventions when sending a claim to an insurance company or payer and ensure that members of other departments (e. g. , accounting, admitting, quality management) understand how their indispensable contributions to the revenue cycle must be translated by billers to fit changing UB-04 Form Locator codes. The book contains an overview of basic payment methodologies, plus 65 quizzes that can be used for self-testing, for performance evaluations or classwork assignments.
