Review Western European Mobile Devices Forecast and Analysis, 2004-2009 / IDC Research:

This IDC study presents the 2005–2009 forecast for Western European mobile device shipments including standalone handhelds and converged devices. A review of performance in 2004 is presented, including vendor and country analysis, followed by the IDC forecast, which examines future shipments for handhelds and converged devices. According to Geoff Blaber, research analyst, European Mobile Devices, "In 2004, the mobile device market grew by 29% year on year, with consumer demand for converged devices via contract renewals and handheld GPS solutions providing the impetus for market growth. While IDC predicts buoyant market growth over the next five years for converged devices positioned as media solutions and as a vehicle to perform enterprise voice and data applications, standalone handhelds will inevitably suffer a steady decline in demand from 2006 onwards".

Review Western European SMBs' IS Operating Budget Dynamics, Channel Selection, and Customer Satisfaction, 2005 / IDC Research:

This study draws on the results of IDC's European Vertical Market survey, carried out in March/April 2005 in the top 5 Western European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U. K. ) among 728 SMBs with between 20 and 499 employees. This study shows SMBs' IS operating budget evolution, channel selection, and customer satisfaction with their primary IT suppliers' performance. Review Western European Mobile Devices Forecast and Analysis, 2003-2008 Update / IDC Research:

This IDC study examines the performance of the smart handheld devices market in Western Europe during the first part of 2004 and examines the outlook for 2003–2008. Forecasts are available by form factor, price band, operating system, display, RAM class, segment, channel, and 16 Western European countries. Examining the market reality of 2003, this study offers in-depth analysis on current and future market trends along with key recommendations and guidance for vendors and enterprises. During the first six months of 2004 the Western European smart handheld device (SHD) market, which includes handheld devices and converged devices, increasing to 2. 18 million units representing an overall annual growth of 27% over the same period in 2003. Despite the market diverging into two camps handheld device (traditional standalone PDAs) and converged devices (phone enabled PDAs and smart phones) — there remain challenges and opportunities for both segments. "The vast majority of voice-centric converged devices, especially Series 60, are sold to consumers that have little knowledge or interest in their advanced capabilities," said Andrew Brown, program manager, European Mobile Devices, IDC. "While in itself this may not necessarily be a problem, vendors and operators will start to reconsider their stance if the investment in converged device hardware and software does not lead to increased revenues. At the moment, integrating an open OS device into an operator or vendor's own services and applications can be problematic — strict APIs and a lack of flexibility increase development costs, and this been cited as the reason behind the long delays in device releases. ".

Review Western European ERP Applications Forecast, 2005-2009 / IDC Research:

In this study, IDC provides ERP applications market forecast data for Western Europe. Specifically, this study presents a new version of the Western European forecast by functional segment, company size, and country. The forecast is based on actual annual data for 2004 and projects the market out to 2009. Results from 2004 show that ERP applications revenue in Western Europe increased 12% from $6. 41 billion in 2003 to $7. 15 billion in 2004. However, when measured in euros, the market grew by a meager 1. 4%. "IDC expects that rapidly consolidating Western European ERP market will see moderate growth overall over the next five years," said Bo Lykkegaard, Program Manager, European Enterprise Applications. "This growth is caused by pockets high demand, such as legacy replacement in new industries such as government, banking, insurance, transport, healthcare, education, and business services, high value extensions of core ERP functionality, and midmarket demand for software-driven process automation. [+]
Furthermore, the emergence of third-party composite applications will create renewed demand for the underlying ERP applications. ".

Also an important local player, Saunalahti is increasing its presence in the market, having migrated from a service provider to an MVNO, and will start to offer 3G services shortly. ".

Review IDC Western European Camera Phone Forecast and Analysis, 2004-2009 / IDC Research:

This IDC study presents IDC's 2005–2009 forecast for Western European camera phone shipments covering traditional mobile phones and converged devices. A review of 2004 performance is presented, including vendor and country analysis, followed by IDC's forecast, which examines future camera phone shipments by device type and resolution for the period 2005–2009. In addition, the market for dedicated digital cameras is briefly examined by way of a five-year shipment forecast by resolution and analysis relating to how convergence in the mobile phone space and end user dynamics in both markets is affecting the imaging competitive landscape. According to Geoff Blaber, research analyst, European Mobile Devices, "The integrated digital camera has become the most visible illustration to date regarding the progress of convergence in the mobile market. 2004 witnessed the proportion of handsets with integrated cameras grow to 70% of total Western European mobile phone shipments, from just 15% in 2003, illustrating the importance of imaging from high-end smart phones down to basic midrange and increasingly low-end mobile phones. IDC forecasts further positive growth between 2005 and 2009, as high-speed networks and technologies such as SIP and IMS maximize the role of the digital camera as mechanism central to rich content sharing across between IP enabled devices. ".

This study presents analysis and forecasts on the EMEA midrange tape automation market, covering LTO, DLT/SDLT, and AIT library products for the period 2000–2004 with forecasts through 2009. According to Robert Peyton, research director with IDC's European Storage group, in 2004 the total tape automation market in EMEA returned to growth in both volume and value. "The midrange tape automation market is enjoying revenue growth, up 9% in 2004. We expect slowing of growth in value through 2006. It is at that point that the market will begin to feel the affect of customer spending decisions with disk-based backup solutions displacing tape hardware purchases. In 2007 we expect to see tape automation spending to begin to decline," said Peyton.

Review Western European PC Market Analysis, 4Q04 / IDC Research:

The Western European PC market remained strong in the final quarter of 2004 providing the finishing touches to the healthy rebound observed during the year. Even slightly outpacing forecasts, PC sales recorded 15. 7% growth in 4Q04 compared with 4Q03 and led to a solid 17. 1% growth for the year with over 40 million PCs shipped in the region. The market continued to benefit from a strong euro, portable adoption, and commercial investment. Aggressive pricing also helped fuel growth. 10. 7% year-on-year growth is forecast for the region's PC market in 1Q05, leading to 9. 5% for the full year 2005. The momentum in notebook growth continued unabated in Europe in 4Q04, with notebook shipments recording another solid quarter at 32. [+]
3%. Buoyant consumer demand over the Christmas period and strong desktop replacement trends in the SMB market have continued to assist overall growth across the region. Desktop sales displayed softer trends, directly affected by the increasing shift towards portable systems in the consumer and SMB market, but volumes remained sustained and displayed a reasonable 7% growth in line with expectations — driven by increased business spending and infrastructure upgrades as well as an uplift in consumer demand for multimedia systems and digital applications. The Western European region will continue to offer many opportunities for growth in 2005 and in particular around mobility, consumer developments and EU expansion. "The announcement at the end of the year of IBM's intentions to sell its PC business to Chinese player Lenovo outlines, however, the challenges that the industry faces in finding effective business models as competition will remain fierce and prices are not expected to turn upwards within the next 12 months," said Karine Paoli, Research Director for IDC's European Personal Computing team.
