Review IT Budget Indicators: U.S. End-User Survey, 4Q04 / IDC Research:This IDC study presents results from IDC's 4Q04 end-user survey of 1,110 U. S. organizations. Respondents were asked to identify IT spending plans in relation to budget increases for the coming 12 months, priority solution areas, drivers/inhibitors, infrastructure replacement/upgrades, and application-related activity. "The relative stability of the economy will ensure that IT budget increases are maintained during 2005, barring wild card factors that might derail this outlook. Large firms remain focused on infrastructure, security, and regulatory requirements and maintain some concentration on cost-cutting initiatives. SMBs, in contrast, are currently more driven by short-term and tactical factors relating to competitiveness, customer demand, and revenue generation, with some evidence of increased awareness of security and risk management. In both cases, there remains little appetite for visionary proposals with any threat of disruption or perceived risk. " — Stephen Minton, vice president, Worldwide IT Markets.

Review Software Channel Benchmarks: IDC's 2005 Software Margins Study / IDC Research:This IDC study presents the results of a survey of 303 partners conducted in early 2005. It includes the gross margins that partners report they earn for reselling various types of software. The data is also segmented by partner type, size, and customer focus. "The latest IDC software margin benchmarks indicated that partners are still earning reasonable returns in most software application categories. However, software margins have generally declined over the last year for the VAR community. These partners may be shifting some of the margin from products to services to be more competitive and meet customer demand for a full solution. Review Enterprise Applications, Q3'04 Forward Spending Indicators / IDC Research:IDC's quarterly ePanel data confirms Q2'04 data suggesting that ERP application upgrade spending is not a major priority. However, the Q3'04 data does suggest a firming of overall spending, possibly laying the groundwork for larger suite upgrades later in 2005. "Large Canadian organizations will maintain their spending priorities on increasing the functionality of business intelligence, finance/accounting, and contact centre CRM applications," according to Joel Martin, VP Software and Solutions research for IDC Canada.

Review IDC's 2004 Open Source Survey: End-User Perspectives on Cost, Substitutability, Trustworthiness, Support, and Adoption / IDC Research:This IDC study discusses the 2004 Open Source Survey, which asked many questions to a cross section of IT professionals and business professionals. Among the questions were some targeted at better understanding how strongly the respondents agreed or disagreed with a variety of statements regarding OSS' capabilities to cut costs, provide access to source code, and function as a substitute for proprietary products, as well as its suitability for important activities and the availability of support. Respondents reported high levels of agreement around such issues as OSS' being a critical part of an organization's strategy to cut costs, the ability of OSS products to replace proprietary products, the ability of OSS products to drive low TCO, the reliability of OSS products, and the availability of adequate commercial support for OSS products. However, mixed results were found around such issues as whether OSS products could be trusted for mission-critical activities and the adoption of OSS products due to the availability of support. Business professionals also tend to be somewhat more wary of OSS products, compared with IT professionals. "The good news is that OSS products appear to have crossed the chasm and are being adopted by organizations of all sizes," said Stephen D. Hendrick, group vice president of Application Development and Deployment at IDC. "OSS products are readily available in most mainstream application development and deployment markets. While this increased availability will in itself hasten adoption, support continues to be the real issue that will spell the success or failure of OSS. ".

Review Canadian IT Market Forecast and Analysis, 2005 - 2009 / IDC Research:IDC's forecast for the 2005 – 2009 period shows that Canadian ICT market has returned to solid growth. All major IT sectors, including Hardware, Software and Services, experienced increases over the previous year, and are predicted to continue to grow throughout the forecast period. While overall market growth will be moderate, certain sectors within the market will drive this cycle, creating opportunity for vendors who can exhibit understanding of client businesses and how to address the productivity imperative. According to Denis Vance "the productivity initiative provides significant opportunity for the ICT industry since business and government leaders agree that productivity improvement represents the ultimate challenge, but one that cannot be met without ongoing investment in information and communications technology".

Review U.S. Business Wireless Subscriber 2005-2009 Forecast / IDC Research:This IDC study analyzes the business market for wireless WAN voice and data services in the United States from 2005 to 2009. It includes a top-line forecast and analysis of the total U. S. cellular/mobile services market as well as a detailed forecast and analysis of U. S. business subscribers to wireless services by generation and application, including voice, data, messaging, and data-only device access. Key questions answered include: What is the subscriber and revenue potential for wireless carriers selling to business users? How will wireless data impact revenue opportunities in the business market, and what are the potential enterprise risks of the current, consumer-focused data efforts? What strategies and approaches should a carrier take to increase business penetration and demand for wireless data? "In 2004, the size of the U. S. mobile market demonstrated substantial growth, actually accelerating from the previous year's net addition growth rates. However, IDC does expect that service providers will run into a firm subscriber growth barrier over the next few years, making data services and revenue stream diversification critically important to continued success," said Scott Ellison, program director, Wireless and Mobile Communications. [+]
" On the business side of the market, the industry still faces issues related to channels, the legacy of voice, and issues around business users' adoption of consumer applications/services. This latter point will be an exceptionally important issue. As the trend of corporate consolidation of their business users into enterprise-liable accounts continues, service providers will need to find solutions and strategies that can help them balance business users' consumeresque data demands against the cost control desires of the enterprise services managers.
