Review Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Disk Storage Systems 2005-2009 Forecast and Analysis / IDC Research:This IDC study of the disk storage market in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ region provides an analysis of the market in 2004 and an overview of the market strategies of the key vendors that compete in the market as well as forecasts for the 12 countries through 2009. This study also discusses the key issues, market accelerators, and market inhibitors as well as provides a detailed assessment of the factors that are expected to impact the markets within the forecast period. "The growth of information that need to be stored and managed is an ongoing challenge to most organizations. Disk storage systems are the foundation of organizations' critical data. Consequently, investment in a network storage infrastructure supported by suitable storage software and storage and data management practices is becoming mandatory and an essential ingredient in a cost-effective and flexible storage solution," observes Graham Penn, research director, Storage Research, IDC Asia/Pacific.

Review Mobilizing the Consumer 2005: An IDC Mobile Advisory Council Survey / IDC Research:This IDC update presents results of the latest study of IDC's Mobile Advisory Council, which affirm that at the onset of 2005 consumers worldwide continue to immerse themselves deeper into a digital entertainment "macrocosm. " Around the world, consumers are blaring their favorite tunes on converged audio players, playing head-to-head death matches on portable game players, and streaming live sporting events and music videos to their mobile phones. Consumers on the periphery of technology adoption are also fully experiencing next-generation home entertainment from the comfort of digital living rooms enabled by home networks and furnished with large-screen televisions, digital video recorders, and other integrated audio and video technologies. Increasingly, consumers are acquiring these digital goodies for their entertainment pleasure, and our latest usage rates for mobile entertainment content and consumer electronics products are a testament to this phenomenon. However, we find stark differences when examining various trends on a geographic basis. For example: Half of all European respondents report purchasing and downloading ringtones to their mobile phones compared with one-quarter of U. S. respondents and 30% of Asia/Pacific respondents. About 25% of European respondents played a game from their mobile phones in the last year compared with 16% of U. S. [+]
respondents and 15% of Asia/Pacific respondents. More than 12% of European respondents have downloaded or streamed a movie, TV clip, or other video clip compared with a mere 2. 7% of U. S. respondents and 6. 5% of Asia/Pacific respondents. Additionally, while Europeans are embracing wireless content on their mobile phones, we see Asia/Pacific respondents maintaining their leadership in data-enabled mobile phone usage more than 7 out of 10 Asia/Pacific respondents are using data-capable mobile phones while over half of European respondents (57. 7%) and ROW respondents (57. 9%) use these devices. Significantly lower rates are seen in the United States just under half (49. 4%) of U. S. respondents use next-generation data-enabled mobile phones. Clearly, the United States has a way to go to rival the next-generation mobility usage patterns seen among European and Asia/Pacific respondents. The United States is perhaps more likely predisposed to become the leader in "next-gen" home entertainment with the highest usage levels of desktop and laptop computing, broadband, home networking, large-screen televisions, videogame consoles, portable game consoles, and personal video recorders. U. S. respondents' original Internet experience was clearly on a larger screen, and in the United States those screens still dominate when it comes to entertainment content viewing today. These trends and other key findings of this study are presented below.
