Review Pie Tree Press: Memories from the Composing Room Floor / Gaspereau Pr:A new and expanded trade edition of Jim Rimmer’s letterpress limited-edition original makes available the autobiography of this gifted type designer and private-press printer. Beginning with his less than shining early academic career, Rimmer recounts his first experiences setting type at Vancouver Technical High School and leaving school after grade ten for a six-year apprenticeship in the composing room at J. W. Boyd’s in the 1950s. With stories about the colourful characters who inhabit the printing trade and his alternately calamitous and successful attempts at refurbishing printing and typecasting machinery, Rimmer revels in the influences and misadventures that have shaped his life. After several years in newspaper composing rooms, including the Williams Lake Tribune, Ladner Optimist and The Columbian in New Westminster, Rimmer left the printing business to train as a graphic designer. Following a relatively brief stint with a Vancouver firm he realized the advantages of a freelance career and set out on his own. Along the way he acquired the makings of a private press and typefoundry and upon his retirement, Pie Tree was born. Pie Tree Press contains reproductions of Rimmer’s illustrations and presswork, as well as samples of his original metal and digital type designs. The book also includes photographs and detailed descriptions of Rimmer’s unique typecutting processes and a new chapter on his experiences with Giampa Textware creating digital fonts in the 1980s and 90s. [+]
“This book came about because some people urged me to document the work I have been doing over the past six decades,” says Rimmer. “I also wanted to make a record of the typecutting process at my home and workshop, and to make a mention of the few books I have done. I also wanted to thank my mother and father. I believe who and what we are is due directly to the things our parents equip us with in bringing us into the world. My mother was a bookbinder and my father could draw and fix anything that needed it. I never took the time to thank them when they were alive. This little book has been a joy for me to do in every part of its making. The writing is not the work of an educated man, but it’s how I feel about the fortunate life I’ve lived. I’ve dedicated it to my wife, Alberta. She never once flinched as each piece of printing equipment struggled down the drive and into the shop. ” This book is a trade hardcover. The text will be typeset in Amethyst and printed offset on wove-finish paper making (estimated) 160 pages trimmed to 7 × 10 inches. The sheets will be Smyth sewn, case bound in paper-covered boards and enfolded in a letterpress-printed jacket. The book includes over 30 illustrations.

Review Northrop Frye on Religion (Collected Works of Northrop Frye) / University of Toronto Press:The late Northrop Frye is Canada's best-known literary and cultural critic, and one of the most original thinkers of the twentieth century. During his lifetime, Frye developed a profoundly religious epistemology that informed and infused much of what he wrote. In bringing together his writings on the Bible and religion, this volume offers many keys to the dynamic essence of Frye's thought. Well-organized, insightfully introduced, and carefully edited, this scholarly, annotated edition covers nearly the full range of Frye's intensive intellectual work on religion. (The Great Code and Words with Power will be published in separate volumes of the collected edition. ) The writings presented here span a period of fifty-seven years and range from prayers to convocation addresses. Although remarkably diverse in form and content, they reveal the splendid coherence of Frye's vision. This is a quintessential volume in the Collected Works, indispensable to all who have been inspired by Frye's work. In it we find the brilliant and often unorthodox record of a great mind imaginatively open to the transforming power of the Bible, and open also to what William Blake called "the human form divine. Review Captain Alex Maclean: Jack London's Sea Wolf / University of British Columbia Press:Alex MacLean was a sailor and sealer, originally from Cape Breton, who was the inspiration for the title character Wolf Larsen in Jack London's best-selling novel, "The Sea-Wolf". When he was just 21, MacLean sailed to the Pacific side of North America, where he operated for 35 years. He was a skilful sailor and a colourful individual whose achievements and escapades while in the Victoria pelagic fleet in the 1880s laid the foundation for his status as a folk hero. "Captain Alex MacLean: Jack London's Sea Wolf" is not only the story of this fascinating character but also the construction of his legend. MacLean's biography opens a new window into the complex world of pelagic sealing in the North Pacific. The sealing dispute brought the United States and Britain to the brink of war, with Canadian sealing interests frequently enmeshed in webs of espionage, scientific debate, diplomatic negotiations, and vexing questions of maritime and environmental law. MacLean's story will appeal to maritime historians, historians of the Pacific Northwest, and readers interested in the history of sealing, international relations, and environmental politics. It will also appeal to readers interested in this fascinating character, both in his own right and as mythologized by Jack London.

Review The Soldiers' General: Bert Hoffmeister at War (Studies in Canadian Military History,) / University of British Columbia Press:Self-doubt so plagued him that he suffered a nervous breakdown even before fighting his first combat action. But, by the end of the Second World War, Bert Hoffmeister had exorcised his anxieties, risen from Captain to Major-General, and won more awards than any Canadian officer in the war. Fighting from the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 to the final victory in Europe in May 1945, this native Vancouverite earned a reputation as a fearless commander on the battlefield - one who led from the front, one well loved by those he led. How did he do it? The Soldiers' General explains, in eloquent and accessible prose, how Hoffmeister conducted his business as a military commander. With an astute analytical eye, Delaney carefully dissects Hoffmeister's numerous battles to reveal how he managed and how he led, how he directed and how he inspired. An exemplary leader, Hoffmeister stood out among his contemporaries, not so much for his technical ability to move the chess pieces well; there were plenty who could do that. Rather, Bert Hoffmeister was exceptional for his ability to get the chess pieces to move themselves. The most comprehensive and easy-to-understand study of any Canadian military commander to date, The Soldiers' General will appeal as much to the student of military history as it will to anyone in search of a good story.

Review Journey to the Ice Age: Discovering an Ancient World / University of British Columbia Press:At the end of the Ice Age, small groups of hunter-gatherers crossed from Siberia to Alaska and opened the last chapter in the human settlement of the earth. Many left little or no trace. But one group-the Early Paleo-Indians-exploded suddenly on the archaeological record about 11,500 years ago and expanded rapidly throughout North America and, eventually, into South America. Journey to the Ice Age focuses on the Early Paleo-Indians of northeastern North America. A revealing, autobiographical account, it is at once a captivating record of Storck’s archaeological discoveries, as well as an introduction to the practice, challenges, and spirit of archaeology.

Review Commanding Canadians: The Second World War Diaries of A.F.C. Layard (Studies in Canadian Military History) / University of British Columbia Press:Commanding Canadians is the first comprehensive personal account – British or Canadian – that covers the entire inshore anti-U-boat campaign in European waters during the Second World War. Rescued from the archives, the diary of Commander Arthur Layard affords the reader insights into the experiences of command at sea against German naval forces. Far from a daily chronicle, this remarkably full and honest diary outlines Layard’s thoughts on his daily life and his naval career, including the strain and responsibility associated with command at sea in wartime. As well as shedding light on the inshore anti-submarine campaign, the diary also discusses significant events, such as the invasions of North Africa and Normandy and convoys to Russia; encounters with important personalities; the sinking of submarines and his own command; and the final surrender of German U-boats. A consummately well-researched work, Commanding Canadians will appeal to both naval scholars, as well as to general readers interested in military history.

Review Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet: BC's Japanese Canadian Fishermen / Harbour Pub Co:Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet is an intimate collection of stories of Japanese Canadians on the water, from the first Japanese immigrant's arrival in 1877 to the present day. The 130-year history of the Nikkei is full of drama, violence, epic struggles against injustice, failures and triumphs. Leaving Japan to escape a life of poverty, they arrived in Canada with dreams for a better future. Collectively, they brought old skills and made many innovations. Fishing for a living is hard but Nikkei fishermen faced additional barriers. Opposition from other fishermen and government, and racist policies sought to exclude them from the fishery entirely. During World War II all Japanese fishermen were forcibly relocated from the coast and their livelihoods taken away. Here are the real lives of Nikkei fishermen and their families told in their words. Even in the face of inequity, prejudice and inhumanity, the spirit of the Nikkei fishermen has left a legacy. Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet is the story of ordinary people who possess an indomitable spirit. [+]
The Nikkei Fishermen Reunion Committee first made the call for fishermen and their families to share their stories, knowledge, skills and time in 2001. The committee includes: Shigeaki Kamachi, Paul Kariya, Takemi Miyazaki, Toshio Murao, Dan Nomura, Richard Nomura (chair), Terry Sakai, Ken Takahashi and Henry Tanaka. The committee contributed their personal experiences, encouraged others to add their stories and served as a sounding board for the writing of the Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet.

Review The Ermatingers: A 19th-Century Ojibwa-Canadian Family / University of British Columbia Press:In about 1800, fur trader Charles Ermatinger married an Obijwa woman, Mananowe. Their three sons grew up with both their mother's hunter/warrior culture and their father's European culture. As adults, they lived adventurously in Montreal and St Thomas, where they were accepted and loved by fellow citizens while publicly retaining their Ojibwa heritage. The Ermatingers contrasts the "European" commercial and trading society in urban Montreal where Charles was brought up with the Ojibwa hunter/warrior values of Mananowe's society. Their sons variously risked life at war in Spain and in the Upper and Lower Canada rebellions, policed Montreal streets in an era of riots, spied on the Fenians on the US border, and made a hazardous journey to help establish the Canadian Pacific Railway's route. Brian Stewart argues that the sons' Ojibwa traditions and values shaped their adult lives: during their adventures, the sons fought for Native rights for themselves as well as for Ojibwa relatives and friends. "The Ermatingers" is an exciting story that contributes to our understanding of Indian and European biculturalism and its effects on those who make up the various forms of Metis society today. It will appeal to general readers as well as scholars and students in Native studies and Canadian history.

Review Voyage to the Northwest Side of America: The Journals of James Colnett, 1786-89 / UBC Press:The journal of James Colnett is the last unpublished account of the early maritime fur trade on the Northwest Coast. Between 1786 and 1789, Colnett’s expedition traversed the coast from Prince William Sound to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Its members were the first Europeans to encounter the Tsimshian and the southern Heiltsuk, and the first to land on the southern Queen Charlotte Islands. The journal is reproduced with full scholarly apparatus, as well as with extracts from a second journal by Andrew Bracey Taylor, 3rd mate on one of the ships in Colnett’s command. Focusing on the expedition’s remarkable encounters with the Native peoples of the Northwest Coast, Galois’ introductory essay also addresses the geopolitical context of the voyage and the intellectual background that shaped the writing of the journals. This fascinating account gives us a new understanding of early European presence in the Northwest and of Native responses to these developments. It will interest historians, geographers, and ethnographers of the Northwest Coast and beyond.

Review National Visions, National Blindness: Canadian Art And Identities in the 1920's / University of British Columbia Press:In the 1920s, a complex set of relationships linked the construction of a unified Canadian identity to the imperial centre (England), to the depiction of the landscape as an imagined national geography in the works of the Group of Seven, and to the image of the "Indian" as a disappearing race. In "National Visions, National Blindness", Leslie Dawn unravels these connections by revisiting and radically revising several well-known events and rescuing others from obscurity. Using new archival evidence, he reverses many of the conventional perceptions of the Group as a national school, and shows how, in a series of international exhibitions held in London and Paris, conflicts arose between their unpeopled landscapes and the presence of Northwest Coast Native people and arts. The book also reveals how the portraits of Native people of western Canada by the American artist Langdon Kihn served to undermine the principle of Native disappearance on which the Group's works were based. Tracing this conflicted history through two state-sponsored programs among the Gitxsan people of the Upper Skeena River to the landmark 1927 exhibition which brought these elements all together and staged the "discovery" of Emily Carr, Dawn shows how these programs ultimately failed, but at the same time opened the door to other directions. Based on current theories, but written in an accessible and engaging style, this book will appeal to readers and researchers interested in Canadian art history, First Nations art and history, tourism, cultural politics, museum studies, and ethnographic practice.

Review When I Was Small-i Wan Kwikws: A Grammatical Analysis of St'at'imc Oral Narratives (First Nations Language Series) / Univ of British Columbia Pr:This book is a collection of the personal life histories of four female St'at'imc elders: Beverley Frank, Gertrude (Gertie) Ned, Laura Thevarge, and Rose Agnes Whitley. These elders are among the last remaining fluent speakers of St'at'imcets, (also known as Lillooet), a severely endangered Northern interior Salish language spoken in the southwest interior of British Columbia. Their stories are presented in the original St'at'imcets as well as in English translation. In addition, a morpheme-by-morpheme gloss is provided for the purposes of linguistic analysis. These texts are among the longest annotated oral narratives for any Salish language. They are also almost unique among First Nations narratives in consisting of personal memories rather than of myths or legends. The stories contain historical information about events in the Lillooet area, the traditional St'at'imc way of life, and the consequences of contact with Western culture. They provide first-hand accounts of what it was like to be a female child growing up in the 1930s and 1940s within St'at'imc communities and in residential schools. "When I Was Small - I Wan Kwikws" will be of interest to members of St'at'imc communities, including teachers and curriculum developers, and to linguists, anthropologists, and others studying the St'at'imc, their culture, and their language.

Review Renegades: Canadians in the Spanish Civil War (Studies in Canadian Military History) / University of British Columbia Press:Between 1936 and 1939, 1,700 Canadians defied their government and volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War. They chose to leave behind punishing lives in Canadian relief camps, mines, and urban flophouses to confront fascism in a country few knew much about. Four hundred died there. Michael Petrou has drawn on recently declassified archival material, interviewed surviving Canadian veterans, and visited the battlefields of Spain to write the definitive account of Canadians in the Spanish Civil War. It reveals who these men and women were, why they volunteered, how they lived and died in Spain, and how the Canadian government and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police reacted to their decision to illegally join another country's war. Renegades is a groundbreaking, intimate, and unflinching story of idealism and courage, duplicity and defeat. It will appeal to anyone interested in the history of Canada, the Spanish Civil War, and the struggle between democracy and totalitarianism in the 1930s.
