Review Nehru (Profiles in Power Series) / Addison Wesley Publishing Company:The first prime minister of India after independence from British rule, Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964) was a major architect of India as a nation state. His dedication to politics led to imprisonment under British rule, a deeply disturbed family life, and eventually to nearly two decades in power during which he ceaselessly pursued his vision of a transformed and democratic India. This biography depicts the phases of Nehru's life and shows how each period reflected new developments in Indian politics. Drawing on previously unconsulted sources including Nehru's post-1947 papers, Judith Brown offers a complete and penetrating account of Nehru. Casting light on both the public and private Nehru, the book also provides an array of insights into the history of India's nationalist movement and international standing, and into the complexities of constructing a new nation state in the aftermath of imperial rule.

Review In the President's Office: The Diaries of L. John Nuttall 1879-1892 (Significant Mormon Diaries) / Signature Books:As the private secretary to two successive LDS Church presidents, the dedicated diarist L. John Nuttall knew much about the inner workings of the church bureaucracy. Brother Nuttall's tenure happened to be during "the raid," as Presidents John Taylor and Wilford Woodruff hid from federal marshals intent on arresting polygamists. A polygamist himself, Nuttall could not approach his own children, whom he had not seen for years, when he saw them walk past the building where he was sequestered. Not inclined to tell anecdotes or confide personal feelings to his diary, Nuttall nevertheless kept meticulous records of business dealings, political maneuvering, private correspondence, and leadership decisions. He was a behind-the-scenes observer of the contentious probate settlement of Brigham Young's estate, the Manifesto ending polygamy, and the quest for statehood. Occasionally he gave voice to some of the anger Mormons felt over non-Mormon influence in Utah.

Review US National Security, Intelligence and Democracy: Congressional Oversight and the War on Terror (Studies in Intelligenceß) / Routledge:This volume examines the investigation by the 1975 Senate Select Committee ('Church Committee') into US intelligence abuses during the Cold War, and considers its lessons for the current 'war on terror'. This report remains the most thorough public record of America's intelligence services, and many of the legal boundaries operating on US intelligence agencies today are the direct result of reforms proposed by the Church Committee, including the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The Church Committee also drew attention to the importance of constitutional government as a Congressional body overseeing the activities of the Executive branch. Placing the legacy of the Church Committee in the context of the contemporary debate over US national security and democratic governance, the book brings together contributions from distinguished policy leaders and scholars of law, intelligence and political science.
