Review A Study of Ignatius of Antioch in Syria and Asia (Studies in the Bible and Early Christianity) / Edwin Mellen Press:

This study examines the letters of this bishop-martyr as products of both Antiochene and Roman Asian influences. After an overview of scholarship on Ignatius, there is an examination of the Christian situations in Antioch and Asia. The writer concludes that relations were troubled between Ignatius and other Christians in Antioch and that the circumstances of his martyrdom included Ignatius having given himself up to the authorities. The emerging "catholic" tradition, which Ignatius represented, was among a variety of Christianities, whose identities are considered in chapter five. The Ignatian letters preserve interesting parallels with Matthean, Johannine and Pauline thought, as well as with the language and ideas of IV Maccabees and of later Gnosticism. Attention is also given to the possible influence on Ignatius and his opponents of the "Didathe", the letter of Clement to the Corinthians and of the Apocalypse.

Review The Polarisation of Elizabethan Politics: The Political Career of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, 1585-1597 (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British History) / Cambridge University Press:

The Earl of Essex was the last great favorite of Elizabeth I and the leading cultural patron of the final years of her reign. Dazzled by the "romantic" relationship with the queen, modern writers have branded Essex a dandy, a military incompetent, and a political dabbler, and have blamed him for the bitter factionalism that plagued English politics in the 1590s. Using an unparalleled range of manuscript and printed sources, this book presents a very different image of Essex and of the outbreak of factionalism in Elizabethan politics.

Review Dictionary of Basilian Biography: Lives of Members of the Congregation of Priests of Saint Basil from Its Origins in 1822 to 2002 / University of Toronto Press:

The Dictionary of Basilian Biography contains 632 biographical entries on the members of the Congregation of Saint Basil who died in the years between 1822, when the congregation was founded, and 2002. The dictionary presents the personal background, education, and various appointments as well as the character, talents, and bibliography of each member, while defining the contribution of each in the educational or pastoral work of the Basilian Fathers. This heritage belongs not only to the Basilian Fathers or the Catholic Church, but to the wider societies and cultures of the countries that were touched by the work of the Basilians. This second edition of the Dictionary of Basilian Biography is approximately three times the size of the original edition by Father Robert J. Scollard, published in 1969. The increase in size is due not only to the additional number of members who died between that year and 2002, but also to additional archival research into the lives and careers of the early members of the Congregation in France. It represents eight years of work by editor P. Wallace Platt and his editorial board, enriching the book and balancing its presentation.

Review The Conscience of Lebanon: A Political Biography of Etienne Sakr (Abu-Arz) (Cass Series--Israeli History, Politics, and Society) / Routledge:

This work is a combination of an account of a most captivating Lebanese personality with a penetrating analysis of the historical and religious contours of Lebanon. His life is part of the national epic with elements of Christian faith and Maronite sophistication, inter-confessional modes of partnership, and violence tearing apart the fabric of social and economic life. Integral to the narrative and incisively unconventional interpretation is the complex politics of Lebanon intermixed with the war that errupted in 1975. Etienne Sakr embodies the destiny of Lebanon and its defiant struggle for national existence in the Middle East. He was the first to understand the threats to Lebanon and the decay in its elite circles, and he may be the last exile to return home. Personal testimonies from Lebanese residents and conversations with others outside of Lebanon who knew Abu-Arz, in addition to interviews with Israelis aquainted with him, provide the authenticity to the portrait of this remarkable man.

Review A Biography of Francois-Xavier-Anselme Trudel, Quebec's Foremost Political Maverick in the Nineteenth Century (Canadian Studies) / Edwin Mellen Press:

Francois-Xavier-Anselme Trudel was a lawyer, politician, and journalist, a maverick and free spirit who undermined all the institutions and values he professed to hold dear. He was a forceful proponent of Roman Catholicism of the harsh, conservative, ultramontane variety, who disobeyed ecclesiastical authority; he stressed family values but neglected his wife and children in his pursuit of fame and fortune; a conservative; an anti-Semite; personal in his attacks on those who disagreed with his point of view. He was a strong French-Canadian nationalist. He died a lonely figure, disliked and ridiculed by almost everyone he had come into contact with during his rather short lifetime. The man behind the self-righteous exterior is revealed in this biography, his public career fleshed out through a clearer understanding of his personal life.

Review The Papers of General Nathanael Greene: Vol. IX: 11 July - 2 December 1781 (Papers of General Nathanael Greene) / The University of North Carolina Press:

This new volume of The Papers of General Nathanael Greene continues the best and most-detailed study of the Revolutionary War in the South. More than 800 letters and orders chart the progress of Greene's army in South Carolina, from the battle of Eutaw Springs—the bloodiest battle of the Revolution—to the British pullback to Charleston. In July 1781, the British controlled large parts of South Carolina and Georgia, had a post in North Carolina, and maintained an army in Virginia. By early December, they held only the areas around Charleston and Savannah. The ability of Greene's beleaguered army to force this British retreat is the focus of this volume, which also documents Greene's attempts to rebuild the lower south's political and social fabric. In addition, this volume provides information on the siege of Yorktown, for although Greene was not directly involved, he received numerous reports from those on the scene in Virginia.

Review Memoirs of Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, Chief of the Aeronautic Corps of the Army of the United States During the Civil War: My Balloons in Peace and War (Studies in American History (Lewiston, N.Y.), V. 53.) / Edwin Mellen Press:

Although Thaddeus Lowe is a known figure to some historians, his scientific contributions such as the portable gas generators that filled his balloons and the compression ice machine that introduced "artificial" ice to the world, remain largely hidden. Ironically, it is very possible to find literature that references his work and his Civil War experiences, yet it is nearly impossible to read the book that this related literature is based upon - Lowe's autobiography. This book has been painstakingly prepared from one of the only known copies of Lowe's difficult-to-decipher text. This amplified autobiography includes photographs of the inventor and his balloons as well as photos of artifacts such as correspondences (including a handwritten note from President Lincoln) and receipts. It also contains relevant maps and supplementary information to enhance understanding of Lowe's journeys and the battles he participated in.

Review The Life of George Rogers Clark, 1752-1818: Triumphs and Tragedies (Contributions in American History) / Praeger Publishers:

The year 2002 marked the 250th anniversary of the birth of General George Rogers Clark. In celebrating Clark's life, this book presents new information and new interpretations of his impact upon the settlement of Kentucky and his control of the Old Northwest Territories. The co-editors- who include traditional historians, social historians, and revisionists-include new details not previously published or found within a single source to bring "Clark research" into the new century. Thirteen experts on various aspects of Clark's life and achievements go beyond his military career as a Revolutionary War hero and frontier Indian fighter to detail the whole of his accomplishments. They address his tragedies along with his triumphs in a refreshingly balanced portrayal. Specific topics of interest include Clark's settlement at Fort Jefferson, the myths surrounding his love life, his management of the Kentucky/Ohio Valley frontier, and a collection of portraiture art never before gathered in one volume.

Review The Life Of The Rev. James Renwick Jackson, Presbyterian Minister In Pennsylvania (1905-1953) (Mellen Lives) / Edwin Mellen Press:

This book tells the story of Rev. James Renwick Jackson (1905-1953), who rose from humble beginnings in Philadelphia to become one of the leading Presbyterian ministers in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. Though his life was cut short by cancer, Rev. Jackson inspired thousands of members of three churches in Philadelphia, Tyrone and Erie, PA. Rev. Jackson rebuilt the First Presbyterian Church of Erie after a devastating fire in 1944, and even after he had fallen ill, he was determined to comfort and serve members of his congregation. Rev. Jackson is also part of a remarkable family. Three of his brothers became Presbyterian ministers, and nine members of the next generation entered the ministry. Rev. [+]
Jackson's brothers and children appear throughout the narrative of his life, and an epilogue summarizes the work of the family since his death. Four of Rev. Jackson's sermons are also included in this book. Written by his daughter and drawing on rare primary documents, this book is not only an inspirational biography, it also contains a great deal of practical advice on about building a ministry.

Review The Story of Joshua D. Breyfogle, Private, 4th Ohio Infantry (10th Ohio Cavalry) and the Civil War (Studies in American History) / Edwin Mellen Press:

At the age of 54, Joshua Breyfogle, a tailor from a small town in Central Ohio, left his wife and six children and enlisted in the Union Army, serving four years as a solider in infantry and cavalry units both in the Eatern and WEstern theatres of the conflict. THese letters and account books are gems in terms of detailed and descriptive accounts of what was happening to him and to his sons all through the War, providing an excellent source for a social history of the United States in the 19th century, as well as shedding new light on the Civil War soldier as an individual.
