Review Concluding Observations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child:Third to Seventeenth Sessions (1993-1998) (Raoul Wallenberg Institute Series on ... Human Rights Documentation, Vol 1) / Springer:

The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted ten years ago, on 20 November 1989, by the General Assembly of the United Nations. It entered into force on 2 September 1990. At present, 191 States have ratified or acceded to this Convention, which makes it the most widely accepted human rights treaty ever. Under article 44 of the Convention, each State party has to submit an initial report within two years of the entry into force of the Convention for that State and thereafter a periodic report every five years. The Committee on the Rights of the Child has been formed to monitor the implementation of the Convention. At its second session, in 1992, the Committee decided that it would adopt, at the end of the consideration of each State party's report, concluding observations reflecting the main points of discussion and indicating issues that would require a specific follow-up. The concluding observations provide a general evaluation of the report and of the dialogue with the delegation, and make note of positive developments that may have occurred during the period under review, factors and difficulties affecting the implementation of the Convention, and of specific issues of concern relating to the application of the provisions of the Convention. They also include suggestions and recommendations to the State party concerned. The present volume contains all concluding observations (as well as corresponding preliminary observations) adopted by the Committee on the Rights of the Child at its third to seventeenth sessions (1993-1998) on reports from 81 States parties in total. Foreword by Mrs. [+]
Mary Robinson, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Dewey code: 342.0852
List Price: $298.00

Review Religion, Human Rights and International Law (Studies in Religion, Secular Beliefs and Human Rights) / BRILL:

Freedom of religion is a subject, which has throughout human history been a source of profound disagreements and conflict. In the modern era, religious-based intolerance continues to provide lacerative and tormenting concern to the possibility of congenial human relationships. As the present study examines, religions have been relied upon to perpetuate discrimination and inequalities, and to victimise minorities to the point of forcible assimilation and genocide. The study provides an overview of the complexities inherent in the freedom of religion within international law and an analysis of the cultural-religious relativist debate in contemporary human rights law. As many of the chapters examine, Islamic State practices have been a major source of concern. In the backdrop of the events of 11 September 2001, a considerable focus of this volume is upon the Muslim world, either through the emergent State practices and existing constitutional structures within Muslim majority States or through Islamic diasporic communities resident in Europe and North-America.

Dewey code: 333
List Price: $290.00

Review Russian Energy Policy During President Putin's Tenure: Trends and Strategies (Business & Investment Review) / GMB Publishing:

This important report looks at the policies and strategies President Putin has developed in the field of energy and at the current climate for foreign investors in the sector. Russian energy policy is at an important watershed. A substantial increase in the output of oil & gas, has led some analysts to view Russia as a reliable, alternative to global dependence on energy supplies from the Gulf. On the other hand, there are concerns that current Russian energy strategy comes closer to the Venezuelan 'energy state-capitalism' model where foreign energy companies are welcome to invest, but only on Moscow's terms and in partnership with a state-controlled national energy company. How are these strategies unfolding and what are the lessons for private sector investors?.

Review International Dispute Settlement (The Library of Essays in International Law) / Ashgate Publishing:

The very purpose of international law is the peaceful settlement of international disputes. Over centuries, states and more recently, organizations have created substantive rules and principles, as well as affiliated procedures, in the pursuit of the peaceful settlement of disputes. This volume of "The Library of Essays in International Law" focuses on the classic procedures of peaceful settlement: negotiation, good offices, inquiry, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement and agencies for dispute resolution. The introduction provides an historic overview, explaining how the procedures first developed and changed over time. Each chapter features a seminal essay that helped create the changes described in the introduction.

Review World Trade: Cancun, Hong Kong and Beyond: A Review of Current Wto Regulations and Practice (Business & Investment Review) / GMB Publishing:

At this critical stage in the Doha Round of the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations, this authoritative report takes stock of the limited progress that has been made since the Ministerial Conference in Cancun in September 2003. There is a detailed, critical assessment of what has actually happened and where the WTO stands after the Ministerial Conference of December 2005 in Hong Kong. The conclusions are stark, casting doubt on whether the target dates of April and July 2006 for agreeing modalities in agriculture and non-agriculture market access (NAMA) and submitting schedules of commitments in both areas are achievable. In spite of further bargaining sessions between various Ministerial groups in camera, little if anything has occurred since the beginning of the year to raise hopes that these deadlines may be met. The report brings readers up-to-date on some key revisions in WTO practice under these headings: Anti-dumping Regulations and Practices (with particular reference to EU Law); Resolving Trade Disputes in the WTO; Private Party Enforcement of WTO Law in the EC; Legal Context Mechanisms for Regulating Environmental Barriers to Trade within the WTO.
