Review Plunkett's Investment & Securities Industry Almanac 2005 (Plunkett's Investment and Securities Industry Almanac) / Plunkett Research:

The investment and securities industry is rebounding from the dismal markets of the early 2000s. Improved corporate profits, low interest rates and efforts to improve corporate governance have led the way, despite recent scandals in the mutual funds industry. Meanwhile, the investment industry is increasingly a global business. This is partly due to the needs of multinational corporations to list their stocks or issue debt in more than one nation. For example, ADRs (American Depository Receipts) are increasingly popular instruments. Cross-border investments and acquisitions continue at a rapid pace. Discount brokerages are enjoying improved levels of trading, while investment banks are developing new ways to create lucrative fees. This carefully-researched book (which includes a database of leading companies on CD-ROM) is a complete investments, securities and asset management market research and business intelligence tool- everything you need to know about the business of investments, including: 1)Investment banking, 2)Stock brokers, 3 )Discount brokers, 4)Online brokers, 5)Significant trends in financial information technologies, 6)Asset management, 7)Stock ownership by individuals and households, 8)401(k)s and pension plans, 9)Mutual funds, 10)ETFs (Exchange traded funds), 11)ECNs (Electronic Communication Networks), 12 ) Developments at the NYSE and other exchanges. The book includes a complete chapter of vital industry statistics, an industry glossary, a complete list of industry contacts such as industry associations and government agencies, and our in-depth profiles of more than 300 leading firms in the investment and asset management business. A CD-ROM database of these firms is included with the book.

Review The Development of China's Stockmarket, 1984-2002: Equity Politics and Market Institutions (Routledge Studies in China in Transition) / RoutledgeCurzon:

As China's government manages a transition away from the socialist plan, how does it build the regulatory institutions it needs to manage the new market economy? Without the correct institutions, laws and agencies that implement the laws in place, the remarkable growth witnessed in China over the last two decades will falter. Financial sector reform lies at the heart of China's economic transition and China's stock market has become critical to the reform of state-owned industry, the supply of fiscal revenues and in building a modern pension system. The Development of China's Stock market takes a close look at the policy-making and regulatory institutions the government has created to manage equity development and shows how, in contrast to neo-institutional and economic theories of regulatory development, public actors have controlled institutional development. Focusing on the institutional development of the market, in particular its regulation, from the first issue of corporate equity in 1984 to the end of 2002, this book explains in detail how government officials have competed to orient the rules of the market to suit their own industrial and fiscal interests and the problems that have resulted. Issues examined in particular detail include:*The first 'shareholding' reforms in the mid-1980s*The relationship between the stock market and the Shenzhen riots in 1992, the treasury bond futures scandal in 1995 and the bank lending scandal in 1997*The similarities and differences between China's regulatory institutions and those in the US*The drafting of the Securities Law in the National People's CongressBased on extensive field research in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing and over forty interviews with regulators and market players, The Development of China's Stock market provides the first detailed academic analysis of the country's stock market. With a comprehensive review of Chinese language literature available on the subject, this book is essential reading for all scholars with an interest in Asian Business and China's transition from socialism.

Review Greed is Good: The Capitalist Pig Guide to Investing / HarperCollins Publishers:

Hoenig is the voice of finance for Generation X - ForbesMoney Is Important. Money Is a Catalyst. Money Makes Things Happen. You want to get in on the action, but haven't got a clue where to start. More than anything, you are unique. You need to make your own decisions about what's best for your future. How do I know? Call it karma. Besides, if you've pulled out an audio called Greed is Good, I can already tell you are not “run-of-the-mill. ” So here's the deal: I'm a 23-year-old, obsessed with money and the stock market, radio talk show host, commodities trader. I've traded and made money in everything from mutual funds to stocks. [+]
Greed is Good will tell you everything you need to know about the major financial “products” out there: from mutual funds to money markets. You'll also learn some soft-ball money management skills, the types of tips that will help you save what you've already made. Money is important, but I think this audio makes an oftentimes dry subject a mite more palatable. I had to sit through the boring stuff, but there's no reason you should. Bottom line? This audio is a practical but punchy ride through the money maze. And if I found my way out - so can you. Read by the author on one cassette. Greed, in Jonathan Hoenig's estimation, is passion. It's lust. It has nothing to do with single-minded accumulation and everything to do with freedom, with the ability to pursue the things that make you happy. Hoenig received his first real introduction to greed while working at Starbucks as a teenager. He found that the money he earned after buying a few shares of Starbucks stock greatly exceeded what he made as an after-school wage slave. While in college, he started a radio show called Capitalist Pig, which now plays in 18 states. Greed has been good to Hoenig. In Greed Is Good, he wants to share the wealth with his post-baby-boom generation by preaching the gospel of investing. But investing isn't just about choosing mutual fund A over mutual fund B. It's about not spending money on useless stuff, leaving more money for the things that are meaningful. Hoenig understands how frills like designer clothes, CDs, and, yes, Starbucks coffee can seem like necessities, when really they're lifestyle add-ons that can be eliminated. Doing without such excesses can be painful, but that's something else Hoenig believes in; not only is greed good, so is discipline, sacrifice, and self-denial. Greed is written in an eclectic style that includes Yiddish phrases, street slang, and generational cultural references ("Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Willis?"), which serves two purposes: it's very entertaining to read, and renders the often-dry message of "Save and invest" infinitely more palatable. -Lou Schuler.

Review Neural Networks in Financial Engineering: Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Neural Networks in the Capital Markets London, England 11-13 ... 95 (Progress in Neural Processing, 2) / World Scientific Pub Co Inc:

One of the most exciting applications of neural networks in recent times has been to improve investment performance in the financial markets. Neural networks can be harnessed for this task as they bear many mathematical similarities to the nonlinear econometric models used to study the microstructure of the financial markets. Since 1993, this annual conference has been bringing together investment managers, neural network researchers, statisticians, econometricians, and computer scientists for an insight into the state of the art in this area. The proceedings of the 1995 meeting will give investment managers, institutional investors and analysts a comprehensive look at the most profitable applications of this fascinating new technology in today's financial markets.
