Review The World Economic Crisis and Japanese Capitalism / Palgrave Macmillan:

This book analyzes the world economic crisis as the essential background for an investigation into recent problems of Japanese capitalism. Taken into consideration are various socio-political or intitutional factors which affect the concrete course of current capitalist development. The study raises questions such as why the stable and prosperous long boom of the postwar capitalist world resulted in an unstable period of deep and widespread depression from 1973, what the roles of Keynesianism and Monetarism are in the ongoing process of world economic crises and how the socio-economic positions of working people have been affected by the attempts to restructure capitalist firms. In so doing, the author hopes to contribute to Marxian social science studies and offer sound social alternatives for the mass of working people.

Review The Long Eighth Century (Transformation of the Roman World) (Transformation of the Roman World) / Brill Academic Publishers:

An assessment of the eighth century as a period of economic history. The 12 papers in this volume range over the whole of Europe and the Mediterranean from Denmark to Palestine, covering Francia, Italy and Byzantium on the way. They examine regional economies and associated political structures, that is to say the whole network of production, exchange, and social relations in each area. They offer authoritative overviews of both traditional and modern work, and as a whole, they show how the eighth century was the first century when the post-Roman world can clearly be seen to have emerged, in the regional economies of each part of Europe.

Review Capital Markets in the Age of the Euro - Cross-Border Transactions, Listed Companies and Regulation / Kluwer Law International:

The integration of European - indeed, global - capital markets has been under way for quite some time. However, the adoption of the single European currency crystallises the process, solving many old problems at the same time as it creates new challenges. In this wide-ranging book, 28 practitioners and academics - including economists, regulators, and lawyers - pool their resources to analyse issues affecting investment, conduct of business rules, stock exchanges, trading, and company law. Originally designed as a research project, this finished work was developed from individual research and first drafts through group discussion to a final interconnected achievement. Since the authors met at a conference in Genoa in November 2000 on the initiative of four major European law faculties, a number of pertinent regulatory developments have taken place, notably the Lamfalussy Report and the adoption of various proposals by the European Commission. Analysis of the impact of such events has been incorporated into this final text. Among other significant matters affecting capital markets, the authors discuss the following: conflict of laws issues; on-line trading; clearing and settlement systems; takeovers; and relevant soft law.

Review Banks, Palaces and Entrepreneurs in Renaissance Florence (Collected Studies, Cs492) / Variorum:

The three general catagories into which the articles republished here have been divided - banks, palaces and entrepreneur - are discrete subjects within Florentine Renaissance studies. Yet throughout these discussions themes recur that reflect a certain consistency in my approach to the study of economic and social life of the city over the many years in which this research has been conducted; and for this reason I welcome the opportunity offered by Variorum to present these articles together in a single volume. The central concern that reappears in these articles is how the environment in which the entrepreneur lived out his life impinged on his enconomic activity whether this be the management of his business or the construction of his home. One might call the method a contextual approach to understanding the economic behavior of the entrepreneur - or even, more ambitiously, a structural approach to mentalite; and it contrasts to the technological approach that has dominated the historiography of businesses and businessmen ( and not only for Florence). This first set of articles examines the institutions outside the business world strictly speaking that shaped the entrepreneur: the school where he received his formal technical training in commercial arithmatic, the family that to a greater or lesser extent determined and shared many of his economic interests, and the city that set the wider stage on which he made his career as an entrepreneur. The focus then shifts to the business world itself. The article on local banking, although a monographic study of one operation, leads to some conclusions about the overall banking system of Florence, the immediate context in which individual banks operated; and the discussion of Medici bank, an interpretive essay rather than a report of new research, extends the context in which these merchant-bankers conducted their affairs to the larger business community of florentine capitalists in general. My current research is directed to complementing and enlarging this view of banks to take in also the industrial sector, including workers as well as entrepreneurs. Finally, leaving his public and professional worlds, the last articles turn to the private sector to examine the entrepreneur in relation to his home. Notable for their size and number as well as their stylistic innovation, these palaces also represent significant investment of capital, their construction required considerable organization of the forces off production, and as homes they restructured the life of the entrepreneur once he moved in. [+]
The article on grain prices, being more narrowly conceived as a report of research, would seem to fall somewhat outside the orbit of the other studies; and yet more than anything else prices are conditioned the market in which the entrepreneur operated. This series for grain was subsequently joined with a wage series over the same period and analyzed with respect to the labor market in a chapter of my The building of Renaissance Florence: An economic and Social History (Baltimore. The original article is republished here to make the data, which has been frequently cited, more accessible.

Review Environmental Taxes and Trade Discrimination (International Environmental Law and Policy Series) / Kluwer Law International:

Environmental taxes, relatively new legal instruments in the late-1990s, are likely to constitute an essential part of countries' efforts to avoid environmental degradation. This work analyzes inconsistencies in various categories of environmental taxes and the non-discrimination provisions of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 and how such conflicts can be resolved within the existing rules. As non-discrimination obligations are fundamental rules in the multilateral trading system, such potential conflicts carry great importance, both for the regime for the liberalization of international trade and for environmental protection measures. The author provides a detailed analysis of the role and nature of environmental taxes. The book assesses the extent to which the relevant provisions of GATT 1994 may impede the use of these taxes, in light of the non-discrimination provisions, the general exceptions, and the rules concerning nullification or impairment of benefits. The work also examines the possibilities of eliminating potential conflicts between environmental measures in general and the provisions of GATT 1994. The book offers an understanding of the complexities of and working with this aspect of international environmental law.
