Review Origins of American Banking (History of Banking & Finance) / Routledge/Thoemmes P:

The set is significant both in the development of the theory of banking and in terms of documenting the history of banking in the United States. It examines the development of banking in the United States in the first half of the nineteenth century. When Congress first tried to introduce a unified currency to finance a national army it failed because of the large number of counterfeit notes in circulation. Similarly two attempts to set up a central bank resulted in bankruptcy. Even after the Mint was set up, the Federal government's theoretical monopoly over coinage did not stop states from using their charter to set up note issuing banks. The resulting corruption and fraud let to experiments in regulation and a system of "free banking". The material included examines such issues as the role of a central bank, banking regulation, banks and the money supply.

Review The Industrial Revolutions (Eleven Volumes) / Blackwell Publishers:

The Economic History Society, in association with Blackwell Publishers, announces the publication in eleven volumes of a new collection of seminal articles on the industrial revolutions worldwide. Each volume includes twenty to twenty-five articles representing the most influential writing on the subject, accompanied by editorial introductions surveying the main strands of intellectual advancement and the important conceptual advances that have characterized research on the topics under consideration. The collection forms a set of volumes on all aspects of the Industrial Revolution, providing a unique resource for libraries with collections in economics and history. Together, they give an insight into the development of research on the subject over the last 50 years. The Industrial Revolutions under discussion are the first industrial revolution - the period of the cotton mill and the steam engine, rather than electrical engineering, fine chemicals and the internal combustion engine. The Industrial Revolutions were events of such profound and continuing importance for all societies that achieving a better understanding of their nature must be a prominent aspect of the educational objectives of both individuals and institutions.

Review History of Banking 1650-1850 (10 volume set) / Pickering & Chatto Ltd:

A text which covers the critical period in the history of banking from the late 17th century to the Bank Charter Act of 1844. It contains the most important tracts, treatises and pamphlets which trace the development of the early modern banking system. The growing interest in banks within the financial markets has led to the development of a parallel interest in the origins and progress of the sector - both for its own sake and also as a guide to policy on issues such as regulation which are highly topical today. This edition brings together the most important English language tracts and pamphlets and other material on the origins and development of private banking, joint stock banking, central banking and the important related questions. It covers the critical period in the history of banking from the founding of the government-sponsored banks (eg. Bank of England, 1694, Bank of Scotland, 1695) in the late seventeenth-century to the Bank Charter Bank, 1844 and beyond.

Review History of Banking II, 1844-1959 / Pickering & Chatto Ltd:

The period from the passage of the Bank Charter Act of 1844 to the Report of the Radcliffe Committee of the Workings of the Monetary System in 1959 is one of the most important in the history of the British and international economy. The role of banks and banking systems in facilitating and shaping the pattern of economic growth has been much explored in an attempt to understand differing levels of economic success in industrializing and mature economies. This is a collection of contributions to the understanding of this role. Some of these works are classic contributions by authors such as Richard Sayers, Walter Bagehot, John Maynard Keynes and Vera Smith, are supplemented by pamphlets, articles and papers, scholarly and polemical, written by those with a particular position to defend or view to publicise. The appropriate levels of liquidity in lending policies, the tension between banks' duty to depositors and their responsibility to foster economic growth, the extent of Central Bank involvement in regulation of the banking system and the economy, the impact of bank failure on the business environment, and the influence of the international economy on domestic banking stability, all generated fervent debate as the British economy first experienced rapid growth in the 19th century and was then overtaken by other nations exhibiting alternative institutional configurations. The introductory essay focuses on how these debates took shape in this period, what lessons have been learned and how they continue to be explored by academics and others.
