Review Making Sense of Collaborative Commerce: Research Digest / MarketResearch.com:eShop Vendors like Ariba, i2, Oracle and PeopleSoft have jumped on the phrase "collaborative commerce," but in Giga's view, the phrase has a problem — it doesn't describe what's new. Collaboration between companies has been going on for years. What is new is the creation of applications to automate key steps in collaboration. Giga prefers "e-collaboration," because the "e" in e-collaboration stresses what's new — the electronic automation of collaborative interactions. Read this Research Digest to find out what market forces brought e-collaboration on to the radar screen of both vendors and clients. What is the role of technology in the development of collaborative commerce and e-commerce? What collaborative possibilities exist along the supply chain between companies and suppliers in terms of the realistic near-term opportunities? What long-term possibilities exist? What about possibilities along the demand and development chains, when a product is developed and launched? Headline Research Fifty years ago, organizations widely implemented telephones. Twenty years ago, fax machines had a similar effect on the enterprise. Most recently, Internet-based e-mail with attachments improved the process further. These were significant jumps in collaborative capability due to new technology. Though collaboration is not new, there is a renewed focus on e-collaboration today, with five primary drivers: 1. [+]
The rise of new e-channels, e-marketplaces and electronic trading networks 2. Improved security for Internet-based communications 3. The quest for competitive advantage 4. Buy-sell transactions that are in fact collaborative decisions 5. Vendors using "collaboration" to describe and differentiate offerings E-collaboration will quickly move from being a competitive advantage to a prerequisite for doing business. Read this issue of the Research Digest for actionable advice on how to best take advantage of the new powerful e-collaboration. Also in this issue, read articles by expert analysts, including comprehensive market overviews, purchasing criteria checklists, statistical analyses and definitional documents.

Review Justifying IT Expenditures: Research Digest / MarketResearch.com:The scenario: In a 500-person IT shop, the economic dip hits home, and the CIO is asked to make significant budget cuts. In response, the CIO asks IT leaders to justify investment in their areas of responsibility. In this issue of the Research Digest, Giga analysts collaborate to help CIOs pinpoint the value of specific budget segments of IT — from knowledge management to the enterprise architecture to training, and many more. When IT leaders are asked to justify their investments, they are made advocates for their areas — and the CIO must evaluate their positions against the needs of the entire enterprise. Justifying expenditures for IT must describe the Total Economic Impact™ of a given segment of IT. This cover story features a detailed chart that outlines the position Giga takes to "defend" a specific slice of IT, taking on the role of IT department leaders and project managers, with compelling reasons why a given section of IT should be spared deep cuts. The Research Digest also offers a selection of Giga research, including comprehensive market overviews, purchasing criteria checklists, statistical analyses and definitional documents. Each issue of the Research Digest offers several research items on application development, communications and networking, computing infrastructures, e-business applications and strategies, information and knowledge management, IT management and services, mobile communications and security. Review Mobile Communities: Is There a Business Model That Works?:For mobile communities to approach even a fraction of the popularity that social networking has in the fixed internet world, both carriers and mobile community vendors need to overhaul their go-to-market strategies. Community vendors such as MySpace that are going mobile have the most at risk—their esteemed brand names and loyal followings (see Exhibit 1). Startup mobile communities face the biggest barrier to entry— creating a community from scratch. In either case, these vendors need to satisfy their two customers—the consumer and the carrier—who sit at opposite ends of the needs spectrum.

Review IPTV in China and India: Can High Volume Overcome Low ARPU?:Excluding Hong Kong, China and India combined have less than 1 million IPTV subscribers and likely won’t break that psychologically symbolic customer count until well into 2008. At the same time, with one-quarter of the planet’s population, anemic cable competition and growing consumer appetites for entertainment, both countries are among the most rapidly expanding TV markets in the world. Not surprisingly, vendors from virtually every sector of the IPTV ecosystem have targeted China and India as key markets.

Review Why "You" Matter: Motivating Users to Become Creators:Whether it’s blogs, podcasts or Second Life and virtual worlds, the media is abuzz with interest in consumer content and how it is shared on the web. These phenomena allowed TIME Magazine to make “You” (the consumer) the Person of the Year in 2006. But as Yankee Group has tracked since the end of last year, the number of consumers producing and posting content online is relatively small compared to consumer interest in user-generated content (UGC). In this DecisionNote, Yankee Group discusses US consumer involvement with UGC and methods to increase consumer interest in and generation of user content. At its core, UGC depends upon easy-to-use tools for consumers and developing innovative methods of UGC distribution for consumers to share it among friends and family. The threat of decreased growth is a danger to web companies focusing on UGC, as stagnating usage of these web tools will lead to declining interest from advertisers and severe revenue declines.

Review Cable Telephony's Effect on Canada's Telecom Market:The residential telephony market in Canada reached an inflection point between 2005 and 2006, declining significantly in residential wireline access. The market has seen an exponential rate of residential switched-access line loss to new competition from VoIP services, specifically from cable providers. Cable companies provided an estimated 2% of residential telephony access in 2005 with their VoIP services. But by the end of 2006, the number of cable VoIP telephony subscribers jumped to 9% of the residential market to a total of 1. 1 million subscribers. In 2006, the market saw its largest growth year for cable telephony; and conversely, it was the largest year-over-year decline in residential switched access.
