Review History of Corporate Governance: The Importance of Stakeholder Activism / Pickering & Chatto Publishers:Academic - Financial And Business History - Economics - Law - History; The company archives of England and America are rich repositories of original texts on the subject of governance, a selection of which are published here. Two major issues ripped from the headlines - Japan's prolonged economic slump and the recent Enron debacle in the United States - both point to the importance of corporate governance, the mechanisms that stakeholders use to ensure that their investments are properly used and that any sums owed them for the use of their resources are faithfully calculated and promptly paid in full. Corporate governance seeks, in short, the reduction of the principalagent problem within major business firms. The history of corporate governance, like the history of any subject, can help today's businesses in two ways. First, knowledge of the past can help prevent firms and policymakers from repeating past mistakes. Second, history is also rife with examples of how to do things right. Corporate governance in Britain and the United States in the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was far from perfect, yet it was also far from being completely flawed. Anglo-American corporate governance, therefore, offers both warnings and lessons. This new edition from Pickering & Chatto offers a unique perspective on this fascinating historical topic. We present a comprehensive selection of texts drawn from the archives of corporations in England and America. [+]
Many of these texts are very rare and very few have ever been re-published before. Corporate governance is an interdisciplinary subject of interest to scholars of history, economics, business history and law. In short this edition fits into the library collection of any institution concerned with history or finance.

Review International Human Resource Management (SAGE Library in Business and Management) / Sage Publications Ltd:Over the last two decades, international human resource management (IHRM) has evolved into an important field of research, teaching and practice. Until recently the focus of IHRM was on how to best manage human resources (HRs) in the multinational enterprise; however, IHRM has now evolved to incorporate two more perspectives, cross-cultural HRM and comparative HRM. Significant developments are taking place in the corporate world which have serious implications for IHRM. These include globalization, increasing foreign direct investments into emerging markets, growing intensity of cross-border alliances, growth of multinationals from emerging markets (such as China and India), increasing movement of people around the globe and an increasing trend in business process outsourcing to new economies. This emerging global economic scenario is creating immense opportunities for IHRM students and researchers. International Human Resource Management brings together articles which highlight the historical evolution of IHRM, discuss the contemporary issues and make projections for further developments in the field. The articles have been selected and arranged into sections in a way to help the reader better understand the developments in the field from different perspectives.

Review Digital Advertising Market Growing Rapidly:The digital advertising industry is experiencing remarkable growth as technological innovations fuel demand. Digital marketing allows marketers for two-way and even one-on-one communication with consumers, potentially providing them with a very personal experience. Furthermore, the cost associated with digital advertising is considered to be much lower than the costs associated with traditional type of advertising. Both effects - enhanced effectiveness and less cost - translate into a higher return on investment for digital marketing in comparison with advertising through traditional media. With increasing entertainment, communication, and media options and a proliferation of devices that allow consumers to tune out advertising, marketers are expected to more and more rely on creative messaging that consumers will not want to skip, as well as advice on the best way to reach an increasingly more fragmented target audience. The report focuses on the global digital/interactive advertising industry - its segments, value, growth rate, trends, growth drivers, challenges, etc. UK and German digital advertising market have been covered separately in the report. It also covers Asian online advertising market with focus on Japan, China and Korea. The report profiles most of the major industry players, including their financial information and other details.

Review Manuscripts and their Makers: (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History) / H. Miller Publishers:This two-volume publication examines in depth the organization, craftsmen, clients and products of the commercial book trade in Paris from 1200 to 1500, a time when the city was the uncontested centre of commercial manuscript production in Northern Europe. The first volume deals with the establishment of the Paris book trade, how it functioned and how it changed, always as a closeknit community of families whose lives are reconstructed from archives and from the manuscripts they produced. These chapters are documented with maps, diagrams, genealogies and illustrations of the manuscripts involved. The second volume contains a register of some 1200 short biographies of members of the medieval book trade in Paris, including scribes and illuminators such as Master Honoré and Jean Pucelle. This important study, based on the series of Lyell Lectures in Bibliography recently given at the University of Oxford, makes a significant contribution to the history of art, the history of French Literature, the history of the book and the history of medieval Paris.

Review Outsourced 3PL Market: Multinational Supply Chain Efficiencies Driving Growth:Global manufacturing companies are striving to improve their supply chain efficiencies with improving global trade, diversified geographical operations, and adoption of the outsourcing route. These manufacturing companies require global services, relationships, and technologies that only larger third-party logistics (3PL) firms can provide. 3PL providers have everything to gain from this increasing global phenomenon of outsourcing and globalization. Following a non-asset based model, 3PL providers have more flexibility in a softer demand environment than asset-based carriers as these providers do not need to own planes, ships, fleet of trucks or a substantial fixed cost network. The 3PL industry is highly fragmented with the global presence of around 4000 3PL providers. Although there are a large number of companies competing in one or more segments of the industry, but the number of firms with a global network that offer a full complement of logistics services is more limited. Increased fragmented market has lately, spurred consolidation. As a result, only those 3PL firms are likely to gain major share of the market that has got broader service offerings, better and innovative technologies and capacity relationships. The report is a study of the global logistics industry with specific focus on the 3PL segment. It analyzes the global and US logistics industry, the growth of 3PL segment globally and also in the United States. [+]
The report assesses the various factors that are driving the growth of the 3PL markets, the opportunities that are there in the Asian market and also the challenges the companies are facing. The report also analyzes the positioning, strategies and customer segments of the top seven global 3PL companies.

Review Free Banking: Theory, History, and a Laissez-Faire Model / Quorum Books:Free banking is a term that refers to the total deregulation of the banking industry. It signifies an absence of such constraints as reserve requirements, capital requirements, government deposit insurance, and limitations on branching. Above all, it means that private banks would be allowed to issue their own currency. This book takes a fresh approach to that controversial topic. Sechrest proposes that free banking constitutes the final vindication of Say's Law, that the optimal monetary goal, monetary equilibrium, can only be achieved under free banking, that the monetarist and Austrian business cycle theories are complementary, and that the most likely form of free banking will be that in which banks issue specie-convertible notes and hold fractional reserves. After defining free banking the author explains why he adopts the well known White-Selgin model. He then discusses the key characteristics of laissez-faire banks, which form the basis for a formal model, complete with graphs, which may be used in the classroom. The unique relationship between the market for money and the market for time that exists under free banking suggests that business cycles will be minimized under such a regime. That relationship also leads to the insight that the Austrian and monetarist cycle theories are really two sides of the same coin. New evidence is presented that leads the author to the conclusion that both Lawrence White's portrayal of Scottish free banking and the traditional image of American free banking are exaggerated. [+]
Three different basic models of free banking are then reviewed in detail and critiqued. Finally, the author suggests both some possible topics for future research and that free banking is desirable socially and politically as well as economically.
