Review Doctors and Slaves: A Medical and Demographic History of Slavery in the British West Indies, 1680-1834 / Cambridge University Press:In this study Professor Sheridan presents a rich and wide-ranging account of the health care of slaves in the British West Indies, from 1680-1834. He demonstrates that while Caribbean island settlements were viewed by mercantile statesmen and economists as ideal colonies, the physical and medical realities were very different. The study is based on wide research in archival materials in Great Britain, the West Indies and the United States. By steeping himself in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sources, Professor Sheridan is able to recreate the milieu of a past era: he tells us what the slave doctors wrote and how they functioned, and he presents a storehouse of information on how and why the slaves sickened and died. By bringing together these diverse medical demographic and economic sources, Professor Sheridan casts new light on the history of slavery in the Americas.

Review Leechdoms, Wortcunning, and Starcraft of Early England: A Collection of Documents, For the most part never before printed, Illustrating the History of ... in this Country before the Norman Conquest / Thoemmes Continuum:Leechdoms, Wortcunning, and Starcraft of Early England centres on an extraordinary range of Anglo-Saxon primary sources which had never been brought together in one collection. Thomas Oswald Cockayne (1807-73) was a philologist, a member of the innovative Philological and Early English Text Societies, and a keen student of the Anglo-Saxon language, a subject on which he published numerous works including Leechdoms. Originally published in 1864-6 by Longman as part of the Chronicles and Memorials of Great Britain and Ireland during the Middle Ages series, this highly collectable item is a valuable sourcebook for historians of the medieval period, medicine, science and language. Volume 1 of Leechdoms contains the Herbarium of Apuleius which lists the various ills and the corresponding plant remedies (i. e. the worts) for each illness, e. g. bishopswort, 'in case a man have a mind not to be drunken', and for 'monstrous nocturnal visitors and frightful sights and dreams' and 'bite of mad dog'. It also includes the English version of Medicina de quadrupedibus of Sextus Placidus, which describes the use of various kinds of animals and their bodies in medicine, e. g. [+]
for oversleeping: 'a hares brain in wine given for a drink; wonderfully it amendeth' and for foot swellings: 'a hares lung bound on above and beneath; wonderfully the steps are healed'. The first volume also has a section on charms, 'for catching a swarm of bees' and 'for a bewitched land'. Volume 2 contains three leech books (medical texts), which list Greek and Latin authorities on medicine with prescriptions and recipes for ailments. Volume 3 resumes the immense collection of material on Western barbarian medicine (for example, remedies for headaches, insect stings and angina) and the Anglo-Saxon language, in addition to sections on Saxon mythology (such as the gods of Woden, Friya, Thor, Tiw and Valhalla) and interpretations of dreams and a horologium. The Thoemmes Press reprint of this informative and original work provides scholars with an intriguing insight into the medical philosophy of Saxon times.

Review Florence Nightingale and the Birth of Professional Nursing (Western Influence on Japan) / Thoemmes Continuum:This is a new six-volume set of writings by Nightingale and her contemporaries on nursing and health care in nineteenth-century England. Topics include hospital nursing, district nursing and education, all of which underwent a transformation from the mid-nineteenth century onwards as nursing became professionalized and began to enjoy increased prestige, thanks in large part to the reforming efforts of Florence Nightingale. Nightingale's thoughts are supplemented by those of Elizabeth Garrett on hospital nursing, J. Clarke Jervoise on infection, Arthur Cotton on conditions in India, and Mrs Dacre Craven and William Rathbone on district nursing. Historically, Nightingale is an important figure in nursing and sanitary reform; she published copiously in these areas, using her own experiences in England and the Crimea as a basis for her critique of medicine and medical care and for her recommendations for improvement; she promoted the professionalization of nursing; she sought to improve the conditions of hospitals by actively promoting principles of sanitation; and she was elevated to the status of national heroine during the Crimean War. Nightingale was prominent as a critic, commentator and reformer of hospitals and nursing. Her writings address the relevant issues confronted by individuals who sought to elevate nursing to a respected profession, and they offer insight into what was perceived to be a woman's special role in the healing art, the often fraught nature of the nurse's relationship to medicine, and the sanitary conditions in hospitals and homes where people lived, died and nursed the ill. This major set is edited and introduced by Dr Lori Williamson, and will be of interest for academics in the history of medicine, nursing, sanitation, social welfare, and gender studies.

Review Eighteenth Century Midwifery / Pickering & Chatto Publishers:Scholars of the British Enlightenment who study obstetrical history traditionally focus on the rise of the male-midwife and competition between the sexes. By reprinting in facsimile primary texts on eighteenth-century midwifery and childbirth, this comprehensive twelve-volume collection gives readers a much deeper, more nuanced understanding of midwives, midwifery students, and women in labour. The set comprises pamphlets, treatises, lectures for midwifery students, texts on the establishment of lying-in hospitals, and catalogues of obstetrical apparatuses collected by male-midwives. Important themes include medical developments, 'freaks of nature', women's 'conduct' and the legal and societal implications of birth and motherhood. Gender is a central issue in works that address the efficacy and propriety of midwifery practice and whether men or women are best suited to the job. Works from popular or low culture feature: advertisements for midwives' services, medicinal cures, and monster births; texts on murderous female midwives and lewd male-midwives; and the 1726-27 correspondence on the 'rabbit-breeder', Mary Toft. Several significant works written by women stand out such as Catherine Elizabeth Weld's report of legal proceedings against her husband on the charge of impotency; and Elizabeth Nihell's Treatise on the "Art of Midwifery" (1760).

Review Marie Stopes: Birth Control and Other Writings / Thoemmes Continuum:'Lesley Hall is excellently qualified to edit and introduce this important collection of my mother's work. Her selection is well balanced. In particular I am glad that she has included A Journal from Japan, which introduces something of my mother's personality. '- Harry Stopes-RoeMarie Stopes (1880-1958) is primarily remembered as a pioneering propagandist for birth control, but her concern for contraception was deeply rooted in her conceptions of ideal motherhood and marriage. A concern with the issues with which she was identified in the 1920s can be seen in early works such as The Race, while Marriage in My Time indicates her involvement with a range of feminist campaigns aimed at ameliorating women’s lot in marriage even before the grant of suffrage in 1918 (for which she campaigned). The flood of queries which she received from correspondents in the wake of the publication of Married Love (1918) made her aware of the lack of help available from the medical profession in many routine events of the life cycle, and of the desperate need for accessible books on topics such as sex education and venereal disease. Prior to taking up the banner of sex and marriage reform Stopes had been a successful scientist, the first British woman to obtain the Ph. D. in botany and one of the first women to be appointed to a university lectureship in a science subject. She received funding from the Royal Society for an expedition to Japan to investigate living plant fossils, and the trip described in A Journal from Japan became the foundation of a life-long interest in Japanese life and culture. Hall, and as well as researchers in sex and gender history, it will appeal to anyone interested in this twentieth-century icon whose influence and legacy is still widely apparent today. -unique anthology selected from twenty-one works by Marie Stopes -including some rare first editions -authoritative range of writings on birth control, marriage, motherhood and Japanese life and culture -edited and introduced by well-known Stopes authority Lesley A.
