Review The Letters of Charlotte Bronte: With a Selection of Letters by Family and Friends Volume I: 1829-1847 (Letters of Charlotte Bronte) / Oxford University Press, USA:Despite Charlotte Bronte's entreaty to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey to burn her correspondence, very little seems to have been destroyed, and in this fully annotated edition, based as far as possible on original manuscripts, many confidential and outspoken letters are published in full for the first time. As well as Charlotte's own letters from 1829 to 1847, a handful of important letters and diary extracts by her friends and family illuminate the writer's correspondence. This volume covers the period from her childhood up to the publication and review of Jane Eyre.

Review FIRST FAMILIES: A Photographic History of California Indians / Heyday Books:Experience the living history of California Indians When L. Frank and Marina Drummer went on the road in 2002, they set out to visit as many people from different California tribes as possible. Crisscrossing the state, they taped hundreds of hours of interviews and collected nearly fifteen hundred family photos. The documentary project, funded by the California State Library and LEF Foundation, paints an unprecedented portrait of California s indigenous people using their own words and photographs from their own family albums. In turns moody, beautiful, warm, and humorous, First Families is a one-of-a-kind book that combines extremely personal stories with images that give readers a broader, deeper view of Indian history and many complex living cultures.

Review Notorious Lives (3-Volume Set) (Great Lives from History) / Salem Press:"Notorious Lives" is an entirely new publication continuing Salem's "Great Lives from History" series, offering more than 600 essays focusing on historically significant personages considered "notorious. " The definition of that term ranges from controversial to extremely negative and extends from ancient times to the present. There is an emphasis on their roles in historical events or their impact on law enforcement, politics, criminology, or popular culture. The focus of "Notorious Lives" is not on glorifying the individuals or their deeds but, rather, documenting their vital data, offenses, and sociohistorical impact for students of history, politics, criminal law, sociology, psychology, and related disciplines. The scope of coverage includes ancient times to the present, worldwide, with an emphasis on North America and the West, and including figures as diverse as Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, Idi Amin, Ted Bundy, and Osama Bin Laden. The set covers such disperate figures as dictator Adolf Hitler and convicted murderer Aileen Wuornos. Controversial figures - from Mao Zedong to Richard Nixon - are also included. Legendary figures, from Salome to Robin Hood, are also addressed. Personages covered are remembered not just for their infamy but also for their key historical roles. Every essay offers a biographical sketch followed by an assessment of the individual's "Impact," analyzing the individual's historical role or influence influence on politics, law and law enforcement, criminal justice, public attitudes, social reform - even legend and the arts. [+]
The set therefore documents the figures who played a role in historical events, not generally covered elsewhere or from this perspective. The vast majority of individuals covered in this publication are not covered elsewhere in Salem's publications or databases. Each essay ranges from 700 to 1,200 words (roughly 1 to 3 pages) and displays standard ready-reference top matter offering easy access to biographical information including the name of the individual as it is best known; the individual's identity, including reign dates or terms of office where appropriate; a summary paragraph highlighting the individual's historical importance; the "Born" and "Died" lines list the most complete dates of birth and death available, followed by the most precise locations available. "Also known as" lists all known versions of the individual's name; "Cause of notoriety" (or, for criminals, "Major offenses") summarizes the reasons for the person's infamy; "Active" lists the date or range of years when the individual gained notoriety; "Locale" identifies the place or places where the individual was most active; and "Sentence" appears where legal action led to a conviction and sentencing. "Early Life" covers background and youth; "Career" addresses adulthood and notorious acts; "Legal Action" identifies legal response, trials, and sentencing; and the key "Impact" section indicates the person's influence on politics, law enforcement, history, or popular culture. It includes: 3 Volumes; 1,575 Pages; 200+ Sidebars; 200+ Photos; 600+ Bios; Pronunciation Guide; Bibliography; Cross-References; Chronological List of Entries; Websites; Geographical Index; Category Index; and Personages Index.

Review The Gladstone Diaries: With Cabinet Minutes and Prime-Ministerial Correspondence Volume XI: July 1883-December 1886 (Gladstone Diaries) / Oxford University Press, USA:The tenth and eleventh volumes of Gladstone's Diaries cover the years of his extraordinary second and third administrations. There is much new material on the occupation of Egypt, the `scramble for Africa', the third Reform Bill, and the crisis in Ireland leading eventually to the proposed Home Rule settlement in 1886 and the split of the Liberal Party. The volumes include not only the daily text of Gladstone's personal diary for these years, but also the minutes that he kept of his Cabinets - over 250 in these volumes - and over 1400 of the letters on politics, religion, literature, and personal affairs which he wrote in these years. The editors long introduction offers an interpretation of this remarkable material and in itself constitutes an important contribution to our understanding of Victorian Britain. The governments of the 1880s are the most controversial of Gladstone's career. These two volumes - both in the quality and the quantity of the material they contain - vastly increase our knowledge of late-Victorian government and politics and will be an essential source for many generations of historians.

Review The Letters of Charlotte Bronte: With a Selection of Letters by Family and Friends Volume II: 1848-1851 (Letters of Charlotte Bronte 1848-1851) / Oxford University Press, USA:This is the second volume in the critically acclaimed Letters of Charlotte Bronte. During the important four years covered in this volume, Charlotte witnessed the success of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, but also endured the deaths of Branwell Bronte and Emily, followed by Anne's in May 1849. Haunted by the fear that she also would succumb, Charlotte found salvation in writing Shirley, published in October 1849, and comfort in her friendship and correspondence with Ellen Nussey, with her publishers-especially George Smith-with Mrs. Gaskell, and (for a time) Harriet Martineau. She may also have received a proposal of marriage from Smith, Edler's manager, James Taylor. This volume is fully annotated and introduced by eminent Bronte scholar Margaret Smith.

Review Eleanor of Aquitaine: Queen and Rebel / Edinburgh University Press:Eleanor of Aquitaine (1124-1204) still fascinates and intrigues historians today, who continue to try to penetrate the mystery surrounding her extraordinary life. Twice queen - of France as the wife of Louis VII, then of England as the wife of Henry II - and mother of three kings, she came into contact with famous churchmen such as Suger, Bernard de Clairvaux, and Thomas Becket; travelled across Europe; lived to be eighty; reigned for sixty-seven years; and produced a dozen offspring at a time when many women died in childbirth. In old age Eleanor retired to the Abbey of Fontevraud, where she died and was buried beside Henry II and their son Richard I, the Lionheart. In this book, Jean Flori attempts the difficult task of writing the full story of this "unruly and rebellious" queen who was determined, in spite of the huge moral, social, and political and religious pressures bearing down upon her, to take charge of her own life in all its aspects. The book is in two parts. The first part is an account of what is reliably known about Eleanor's life and her role in history, in the main based on contemporary sources and drawing on the work of previous historians. The second part deals with questions about Eleanor and her legend currently under debate by scholars. This part draws on hypotheses and controversies, and has recourse to ancient sources and a wide range of recent studies, addressing in particular her role in the second crusade, courtly love, power and patronage, and the Plantagenet Court and arthurian literature.

Review A Russian Advocate of Peace: Vasilii Malinovskii (1765-1814) (International Archives of the History of Ideas / Archives internationales d'histoire des idées) / Springer:This is the first extensive study devoted to Vasilii Malinovskii, one of the most significant figures in the history of Russian thought. He was one of the first supporters of abolition of serfdom in Russia. In his capacity as Director, Malinovskii contributed in a fundamental way to the establishment of the liberal atmosphere characterizing The Tsarskoe Selo Lycee, where Aleksandr Pushkin and some of the Decembrists were educated. His major work, Dissertation on Peace and War (1803), contains a plan for the establishment of peace in Europe which was the only project of this sort to appear in Russia. At a time when Napoleonic wars were deeply transforming the previous status quo, he proposed to redesign the geopolitical map of Europe regrouping its states on the basis of rational, ethno-linguistic criteria. A General Council empowered to deliberate on conflicts among them was to guarantee a permanent peace.
