Review The luck of thirteen;: Wanderings and flight through Montenegro and Serbia / Dutton:

Piccadilly weepers vanished and a depressed little quartet was left on the platform-our two selves a lean schoolmaster and an egg-shaped man who never spoke a word. We found a clerk sitting in an office. He said we could not leave our bags in his room but as we made him own that we could not put them anywhere else he looked the other way while we dropped them in the corner. Review The Tangier Diaries, 1962-1979 / Cadmus Press:

Every page drips with memories, writes William Burroughs about this collection of Hopkins' diaries covering two decades of a life lived as an ex-patriot. Hopkins was one of the most influential writers living in Tangier at the time; including , among others Paul and Jane Bowles. The writing varies from poetic, reflective to vernacular and antic. The mystery of walking through the palmeraie by night. The silence of the universe blots out the noisiness of man. Hopkins wrote the preceding line on December 23, 1966, however, by the 24th, he is more interested in lanterns made of tin cans, and , a Moroccan schoolboy, [who,] hoping to start a conversation, recited all the French he learned in school: 'Bonsoir, monsieur. Quelle heure est-il?'.

Publication date: 2001-06-15
Dewey code: 759.11
Price: $29.95

Review Odjig: The Art of Daphne Odjig, 1960-2000 / Key Porter Books:

Odjig: The Art of Daphne Odjig, 1960-2000 is a graceful blend of biography, essay, and critique which illuminates the importance of this gifted artist to the Canadian artistic community and provides art lovers with a rare glimpse into the extraordinary heart of this painter. Odjig confronts the themes of the aboriginal experience, her family dynamic, and her spiritual beliefs in her paintings, which are extremely personal. Collectors of her works are awed by her innovative use of traditional aboriginal symbols, which transcend the specific culture from which they come. In the early 1960s, her development of a recognizable "Odjig style" garnered her enough attention to make possible her first solo show in 1967. Odjig's reputation as an artist was growing internationally and her commissioned painting Earth Mother was displayed at EXPO '70 in Japan. Odjig's importance as a Canadian artist is immeasurable. Bob Boyer, a renowned Metis artist and lecturer, absorbingly explores in his preface the place of Native art in the broader spectrum of Canadian culture, in order to provide a more in-depth perspective on Odjig's significance. Pamela Krueger, an award-winning appreciator of Canadian art, discusses in the introduction the course of Odjig's life and career and places her art into its cultural context.

Review Restavec: From Haitian Slave Child to Middle-Class American / Univ of Texas Pr:

African slaves in Haiti emancipated themselves from French rule in 1804 and created the first independent black republic in the Western Hemisphere. But they reinstituted slavery for the most vulnerable members of Haitian society—the children of the poor—by using them as unpaid servants to the wealthy. These children were—and still are—restavecs, a French term whose literal meaning of "staying with" disguises the unremitting labor, abuse, and denial of education that characterizes the children's lives. In this memoir, Jean-Robert Cadet recounts the harrowing story of his youth as a restavec, as well as his inspiring climb to middle-class American life. He vividly describes what it was like to be an unwanted illegitimate child "staying with" a well-to-do family whose physical and emotional abuse was sanctioned by Haitian society. He also details his subsequent life in the United States, where, despite American racism, he put himself through college and found success in the Army, in business, and finally in teaching.

Review D. H. Lawrence: Dying Game 1922-1930: The Cambridge Biography of D. H. Lawrence (Cambridge Biography) / Cambridge University Press:

The final volume of the Cambridge Biography of D. H. Lawrence chronicles his progress from leaving Europe in 1922 to his death in Vence in 1930. Based on much new or unfamiliar material, it describes his travels in Ceylon, Australia, the USA and Mexico in an increasingly desperate search for an ideal community. With his return to Europe in 1925, there is a detailed account of his rediscovery of painting, his battle against censorship, and the vitality with which he resisted the debilitating effects of tuberculosis. Kangaroo, The Plumed Serpent and Lady Chatterley's Lover are usually seen as the literary landmarks of these years; but Lawrence also wrote remarkable novellas, essays, criticism, short stories and poems. Lawrence is revealed here not as the impotent and self-obsessed figure of popular legend, but as a man more complex, more humorous, and more exemplary in his resolute grappling with the central problems of life and death.
