Review The Political Career of Thomas Wriothesley, First Earl of Southampton 1505-1550, Henry Viii's Last Chancellor (Studies in British History) / Edwin Mellen Press:

Thomas Wriothesley was a pivotal figure in the political and religious upheavals of the 1530s and 1540s, yet to date his role has not been considered in any depth. This work rectifies that deficiency, and in the process illuminates further the workings of mid-Tudor government and politics. Wriothesley worked with both Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell, carried out Cromwell's plans for the re-organization of the privy council and other administrative offices, had a hand in the monastic dissolution and in the suppression of the Pilgrimage of Grace. For the rest of Henry's reign, Wriothesley was the conduit through which the king's wishes were made known. He held the office of lord chancellor into the reign of Edward.

Review A Farm In the Hidewood: My South Dakota Home / Altruria Publishing Company:

Following the tradition of Laura Ingalls Wilder, A Farm In the Hidewood: My South Dakota Home depicts farm life several generations after the Ingalls family lived on the Dakota prairie. One-room country schools still existed in the 1960s and blizzards still occurred. Thirteen-year-old Diane dreamed of being pretty and popular and of traveling to distant places she read about in books. While the close-knit Diekman family worked and played together on the Hidewood Valley farm, Diane struggled with shyness and a lack of self-confidence when away from home. She feared the upcoming transition from her one-room elementary school to the town high school attended by two hundred students. Would she make friends? Would the others like her? She wondered if the boy she admired might finally notice her. Readers of A Farm In the Hidewood will discover how to wash clothes with a wringer washer, churn homemade ice cream, sling hay bales into the barn, make blood sausage and butcher chickens. The author draws from memories and diaries to describe family experiences, adding dialogue and scenes as they might have happened.

Review British Women and the Spanish Civil War (Routledge/Canada Blanch Studies in Contemporary Spain) / Routledge:

Through oral and written narratives, this book examines the interaction between women and the war in Spain, their motivation, the distinctive form of their involvement, and the effect of the war on their individual lives. These themes are related to wider issues, such as the nature of memory and the role of women within the public sphere. Throughout the study the author distils the most recent theoretical work in the fields of oral history, psychoanalytic methodology for historians, and the anthropological, historical and cultural studies on memory and memorialization.

Review Christina of Markyate / Routledge:

This fascinating and comprehensive collection surveys the life of an extraordinary medieval woman. Christina of Markyate made a vow of chastity at an early age, against the wishes of her parents who intended her to marry. When forced into wedlock, she fled in disguise and went into hiding, receiving refuge in a network of hermitages. Christina became a religious recluse and eventually founded a priory of nuns attached to St. Albans. Samuel Fanous and Henrietta Leyser present a vivid inter-disciplinary study devoted to the life, work, and extant vita of Christina of Markyate, which draws on research from a wide range of disciplines. Key topics have been selected in a balanced and comprehensive approach; they cover timeless themes, such as monasticism and eremiticisim, as well as topical matters in medieval research, such as gender issues. The book begins by introducing readers to Christina's person and life, setting her in a cultural, social and religious context, and presenting the literary background of The Life of Christina of Markyate. Further chapters examine themes such as the two traditions of martyrdom, virgin and ascetic, and Christina's alignment with both, the presentation of sanctity and sexual temptation in the twelfth century, and a survey of the phenomena of hermits and anchorites. The book also includes a close reading of the vita, revealing its markedly hagiographical qualities, and a discussion of the drama of the initials on the St. [+]
Alban's Psalter and what this reveals about the relationship between Christina and Abbot Geoffrey. Beautifully illustrated, this book provides students who regularly encounter Christina with a research compendium from which to begin their studies, and introduces Christina to a wider audience.

Review Cambridge University Press / James Fitzjames Stephen: Portrait of a Victorian Rationalist Publication date: 1988-11-25
Dewey code: 347.410140924
Price: $69.95

Review James Fitzjames Stephen: Portrait of a Victorian Rationalist / Cambridge University Press:

In this important study Dr Smith uses a wide range of primary materials to provide the first modern comprehensive examination of the work, writings and ideas of James Fitzjames Stephen. Stephen's broad rationalist/utilitarian ethical and intellectual stance manifested itself most prominently in law and social and political philosophy. Stephen's turn of mind led him to perceive the substance of literature and religious orthodoxy as of complementary interest and relevance to the social and political mores of Victorian England, making him one of Dickens' and Cardinal Newman's most formidable and trenchant critics. Dr Smith's account is the first to set Stephen's life and thought in its proper Victorian context, and marks a significant addition to the growing literature on the intellectual history of nineteenth-century England.

Review Wilfrid Laurier University Press / Florence Nightingale: An Introduction to Her Life and Family: Collected Works of Florence Nightingale, Volume 1 (Collected Works of Florence Nightingale) Creator: Lynn McDonald

Review Florence Nightingale: An Introduction to Her Life and Family: Collected Works of Florence Nightingale, Volume 1 (Collected Works of Florence Nightingale) / Wilfrid Laurier University Press:

Florence Nightingale: An Introduction to Her Life and Family introduces the Collected Works by giving an overview of Nightingale’s life and the faith that guided it and by outlining the main social reform concerns on which she worked from her “call to service’’ at age sixteen to old age. This volume reports correspondence (selected from the thousands of surviving letters) with her mother, father and sister and a wide extended family. There is material on Nightingale’s “domestic arrangements,’’ from recipes, cat care and relations with servants to her contributions to charities, church and social reform causes. Much new and original material comes to light, and a remarkably different portrait of Nightingale, one with a more nuanced view of her family relationships, emerges. The Series In the Collected Works of Florence Nightingale all the surviving writing of Florence Nightingale will be published, much of it for the first time. Known as the heroine of the Crimean War and the major founder of the modern profession of nursing, Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) will be revealed also as a scholar, theorist and social reformer of enormous scope and importance. Original material has been obtained from over 150 archives and private collections worldwide. This abundance of material will be reflected in the series, revealing a significant amount of new material on her philosophy, theology and personal spiritual journey, as well as on her vision of a public health care system, her activism to achieve the difficult early steps of nursing for the sick poor in workhouse infirmaries and her views on health promotion and women’s control over midwifery. Nightingale’s more than forty years of work for public health in India, particularly in famine prevention and for broader social reform, will be reported in detail. The Collected Works of Florence Nightingale demonstrates Nightingale’s astute use of the political process and reports on her extensive correspondence with royalty, viceroys, cabinet ministers and international leaders, including such notables as Queen Victoria and W. [+]
E. Gladstone. Much new material on Nightingale’s family is reported, including some that will challenge her standard portrayal in the secondary literature. Sixteen printed volumes are scheduled and will record her enormous and largely unpublished correspondence, previously published books, articles and pamphlets, many of which have long been out of print. There will be full publication in electronic form, permitting readers to easily pursue their particular interests. Extensive databases, notably a chronology and a names index, will also be published in electronic form, again permitting convenient access to persons interested not only in Nightingale but in other figures of the time.

Review Shelley and His Circle, 1773-1822, Volumes 5 and 6, (Volumes 5 and 6) / Harvard University Press:

This two-volume set presents and contextualizes major manuscripts in The Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle, now at The New York Public Library. The volumes open with a retrospective centered on the young Shelley, featuring unpublished letters from 1809-1810, a memorandum book he kept at Eton, his libelous verse-letter about his parents, and other manuscripts predating his Italian exile. This backward glance also includes the only known exchange between Mary Wollstonecraft and Catharine Macaulay, Godwin's first letter to Malthus, and a partial draft of Mary Shelley's Proserpine, emended by her husband. The chronology of the Italian period begins in July 1820 with the press copy of Byron's verse drama Marino Faliero and continues through December, a period of political ferment when the letters of Leigh Hunt, the Shelleys, Byron, and Countess Teresa Guiccoli reflect preoccupation with Queen Caroline's "trial" for adultery in Britain and brewing revolutions in Italy. Other highlights are two important eyewitness accounts: a young British officer's reminiscences of Shelley in 1814 and Henry Reveley's testimony about the Shelley Circle. Four substantial essays along with detailed commentaries provide context for the 100 manuscripts.

Review Apache Days & Tombstone Nights: John Clum's Autobiography, 1877-1887 / High-Lonesome Books:

It has been said that two sagas of the Southwest stand out above all others: the Apache Wars and the turbulent years of Tombstone, Arizona, in the early 1880s. No one was more intimately involved in these events than John Clum. As an Indian agent, Clum was decades ahead of his time. He respected the Apache and, years before Buffalo Bill Cody, took a number of them to the Eastern states as part of a Wild West road show. He was also an Indian fighter who out-foxed Geronimo and took him prisoner at the Warm Springs Reservation in New Mexico. Later he would serve as mayor of Tombstone, and he would found the most famous newspaper in the West, the "Tombstone Epitaph". During his Tombstone years, Clum would befriend the Earp brothers and would support them in their feud with the Clanton gang. The autobiography and related memoirs collected here have not previously been published in book form. Carefully annotated by Neil Carmony, "Apache Days and Tombstone Nights" offers John Clum's singular view of notable events in Southwest history.

Review Ernest Thompson Seton, Founder of the Woodcraft Movement 1860-1946: Apostle of Indian Wisdom and Pioneer Ecologist / Edwin Mellen Press:

This book focuses on artist-naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton, who has been compared with Kipling as a writer, with Audubon as a bird artist, with Baden Powell as a youth leader, and with Fabre as a naturalist. Very much a neglected figure, this study provides an introduction to the life and work of this "creative genius," a naturalist who, at the turn of the century, was largely responsible for initiating an ecological consciousness and ethic.

List Price: $138.95

Review An Ambrose Bierce Companion: / Greenwood Press:

Ambrose Bierce was born in 1842 and mysteriously disappeared in 1914. During his lifetime, he was a controversial and prolific writer, and there is growing interest in his works. As a Union soldier during the Civil War, he witnessed bloodshed and the atrocities of battle. After the war, he began a career as a journalist in San Francisco, where many of his newspaper columns were filled with venom and daring. In addition, he wrote war stories and tales of the supernatural, along with an assortment of poems. Today, he is probably best remembered as the author of The Devil's Dictionary, originally published as The Cynic's Dictionary in 1906. This reference is a guide to his life and writings. An opening essay overviews Bierce's contribution to literature and journalism, and a chronology summarizes the most important events in his life. The bulk of the Companion comprises alphabetically arranged entries on Bierce's major works and characters and on historical persons and writers who figured prominently in his life and career. Thus the volume provides coverage of Bierce's contemporaries, many of whom he satirized in his scathing newspaper columns. [+]
Many of the entries list works for further reading, and the book closes with a selected, general bibliography. Because of Bierce's concern with so many issues of his day, the volume offers a valuable perspective on American culture during the time in which he lived.
