Review Life on Air / Chivers Audio Books:Sir David Attenborough is Britain's best-known natural history film-maker. His career as a naturalist and broadcaster has spanned nearly five decades and there are very few places on the globe that he has not visited. In this volume of memoirs David tells stories of the people and animals he has met and the places that he has visited. Sir David's first job - after Cambridge University and two years in the Royal Navy - was at the London publishing house Hodder & Stoughton. Then in 1952 he joined the BBC as a trainee producer and it was while working on the "Zoo Quest" series (1954-64) that he had his first opportunity to undertake expeditions to remote parts of the globe to capture intimate footage of rare wildlife in its natural habitat. He was Controller of BBC2 (1965-68), during which time he introduced colour television to Britain, then Director of Programmes for the BBC (1969-1972). However in 1973 he abandoned administration altogether to return to documentary-making and writing. Over the last 25 years he has established himself as the World's leading Natural History programme maker with several landmark BBC series, including "Life on Earth" (1979), "The Living Planet" (1984), "The Trials of Life" (1990), "The Private Life of Plants" (1995) and "Life of Birds" (1998).

Review The History of a False Illusion-Memoirs on the Communist Movement in Poland, 1918-1938 / Edwin Mellen Press:A translation (from the Yiddish) of the memoirs of the Polish-Jewish workers leader Pinkus Minc (1895-1962). Minc played a leading role in the Jewish Bund in the early 1920s, leading its left wing in a fusion with the Polish Communist Party in 1922. Minc was active in organizing workers in Poland, West Byelo Russia and West Ukraine. He spent much time in prison. In the face of severe state repression, Minc was forced to leave Poland in the mid-1930s, whereupon he worked with Trotskyite groups in Prague, Danzig, Copenhagen, and finally Paris, where he was a close collaborator and friend of Trotsky's son Leon Sedov. The publication of his memoirs contributes significantly to our understanding of the East European workers movements. It should also interest scholars in Jewish Studies, Russian Studies, political science and personal history.

Review John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland 1504-1553 / Oxford University Press, USA:This biography presents the whole career of the controversial sixteenth century statesman, John Dudley. As Lord President of the council which governed Edward VI's minority, he was the most powerful man in England between 1550 and 1553, notorious for his attempt to alter the succession to the throne in favour of his daughter-in-law, Lady Jane Grey. This is a critical reassessment of a man who was the last medieval magnate and perhaps the greatest of the Tudor service nobility.

Review Textual Evidence of the Life of Simon Girty, American Revolutionary Turncoat: An Historian's Guide to the Draper Manuscript Collection of the Wisconsin Historical Society / Edwin Mellen Press:This volume makes accessible to researchers interested in the life and history of Simon Girty certain materials from the Draper Manuscript Collection of the Wisconsin Historical Society. Girty, a figure maligned as much as praised, served as an interpreter between Americans, British, and Native Americans during the American Revolution, and is remembered by some as a turncoat and by others as a hero. Lyman Draper, founder of the Wisconsin Historical Society in the mid-19th century, was keenly interested in Girty's life and attempted to show that Simon Girty really was an honorable man. Here presented are annotated reproductions of the Draper manuscripts of interest to Girty scholars and historians of the American Revolution.

Review The Making of a Professional: Manton S. Eddy, USA (Contributions in Military Studies) / Greenwood Press:An examination of the life of General Manton S. Eddy, this study details his experiences in World War II as leader of the U. S. 9th Infantry Division through North Africa, Sicily and France, and subsequently, as commander of XII Corps, into the heart of Germany. While much has been written about the top military leaders of this era, there is little information about corps commanders whose missions were limited to doing battle and whose organizations were tailored exclusively for this task. Eddy's career provides a model for the Army's most ambitious officers, particularly those who, like Eddy, faced the challenge without family connections or the traditional West Point education. He devoted his life to the U. S. Army, enhancing his innate talents through the incorporation of a daily program of self-education. Eddy had an excellent grasp of the basic principles of military tactics and strategy. [+]
He attained this art through home study and assiduous application at the Army's professional education institutions, in particular at the Command and General Staff College, where he served as an instructor for four years. He focused on people, quickly learning and applying basic skills to draw out their best efforts. He came to know what to expect from them in the chaos and under the pressure of combat. This facilitated his development of strong, mission-oriented subordinates. His personal goal was always to maximize all available power at the correct point for crushing his nation's enemies, and to this end, he was extraordinarily successful.

Review Julian The Apostate (Debates and Documents in Ancient History) / Edinburgh University Press:This new study of the last pagan Roman emperor provides remarkable insight into the man and his times. Issues of historical significance are identified and discussed in one volume. As the last pagan Roman Emperor, he provides a focus for studying the religious transformations that were taking place in the empire in the fourth century. Further, his secular policies and concerns concentrate attention on other transformations - social and political - within the period. Notably, Julian elicited sharply divided opinion from his contemporaries, which is largely polarised between pagan supporters and Christian opponents. Such division of opinion is also matched by the modern literature on him. Was he the prospective saviour of the Roman Empire, or was he out-of-touch and living in the past? Was he an evangelist for Mithraism, or an altogether more traditional pagan? Was he a shrewd military man, or a rash risk-taker whose luck spectacularly ran out on his Persian expedition? These questions and more are asked and discussed, allowing students to reach their own verdict on this exciting and controversial emperor.

Review Cumulative Bibliography Of Medieval Military History And Technology / Brill Academic Pub:There is perhaps no other more lively area for study in medieval history than medieval military history, with its attendant and complementary field, the history of medieval military technology. In the past twenty years, it seems that more major scholarly inroads have been made in this field than in any other historical genre of medieval studies or chronological period of military history. What this has meant is that it is now more difficult to keep up with all of the trends and sources in the field than ever before. Hence the need for a reference work which covers what has previously been written and which, in turn, can assist the scholar, both the more experienced academic and the beginner, to improve his or her work in medieval military history or the history of medieval military technology. Utilizing library catalogues, bibliographies, and footnotes, this bibliography has compiled the most complete list of secondary references to works in medieval military history and the history of military technology. It keeps fairly strictly to a geography which centers on conventional medieval boundaries-Europe, Byzantium, and the Middle East. However, the chronology does differ from the conventional medieval dates. Because of its influence on the early Middle Ages, references to Late Antiquity, especially to the military history and technology of the third- and fourth-century Roman Empire have been included. For the opposite reason, the influence of the Middle Ages on the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, references to military history and technology up to 1648 have been included as well. This is especially important in the study of the Ottoman Turkish Wars and Arms and Armor, where the end of the fifteenth century as a chronological terminus makes little sense.

Review Sir Frederick Sykes and the Air Revolution 1912-1918 (Cass Series--Studies in Air Power, 8) / Routledge:This is a long-overdue study of Sir Frederick H. Sykes, Chief of the Air Staff of Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) during the First World War. Historians, for the most part, have either overlooked Sykes or misinterpreted him, leaving a gap in the story of British flying. Contrary to previous images of Sykes, we now see that he was not a secretive intriguer or a tangential subject in RAF history. Rather, he played a fundamental part in organizing and leading British aviation from 1912 to the end of 1918. He provided organization, visionary guidance and efficient administrative control for the fledgling service that tried to survive infancy in the heat of battle. Sykes assumed command of the Air Staff immediately after the RAF's birth - on April 1 1918 - at a critical time, when the German spring offensives were about to split the French and British defensive lines and cause an Allied defeat. Sykes stepped in to quell organizational and bureaucratic fires by working harmoniously with the Air Minister, Lord Weir. Together they maintained control of the air service and established a strategic Independent Air Force prepared to bomb Berlin by the time the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918. Sykes battled against fellow airmen, military traditionalists and French commanders to promote an incipient air revolution in warfare by instituting 'air-minded' use of new technologies to economize on manpower and apply air power tactically, strategically and independently from the inefficient army and navy competitive control that had plagued the air services. [+]
From the reconnaissance of 1914 to the devastating precision attacks of Desert Storm in the 1991 Gulf War, aircraft have transformed the modern battlefield. As this book shows, Sykes was important to that revolutionary process.

Review For the Hell of It: The Life and Times of Abbie Hoffman / Harcourt:As cultural revolutionary, media celebrity, Yippie, lost soul, and tragic suicide, Abbie Hoffman embodied the contradictions of his era. In this riveting new biography, Jonah Raskin draws on his own twenty-year relationship with Hoffman; hundreds of interviews with friends, family members, and former comrades; and careful scrutiny of FBI files, court records, and public documents. For the Hell of It is a must-read not only for those interested in this ultimate iconoclast, but also for all who seek a fuller understanding of Abbie Hoffman's America. Raskin's scrupulously researched history corrects many of the myths Abbie Hoffman perpetuated about his life and career, yet also prompts new respect for the man as an able political strategist and organizer. Hard to believe from the staid book jacket photo, but the author (now a university professor) was "minister of education" in Hoffman's Youth International Party, better known as the Yippies. Raskin generally keeps his personal involvement in the background, but it obviously informs his well-rounded, antistereotypical depiction of the messy, often demented nature of 1960s radicalism.

Review A Biography of Oliver Johnson: Abolitionist and Reformer, 1809-1889 (Studies in American History (Lewiston, N.Y.), V. 44.) / Edwin Mellen Press:The abolitionist movement in America before the Civil War was as intensely idealistic as it was supremely successful. Slavery ended, albeit in the fires of war. Dr. Raffo's fine study of Oliver Johnson brings the life of this intriguing and admirable man to our attention. Raffo's work is solidly grounded in the relevant archival sources, as well as the abundant literature on abolitionism of the last half century. The abolitionist movement in America before the Civil War was as intensely idealistic as it was supremely successful. Slavery ended, albeit in the fires of war. Abolitionism had roots in the British antislavery movement in the latter part of the Eighteenth century and ultimately it grew out of simple human disgust at the horrors of slavery itself. And yet the story of abolitionism is a unique American drama. In one sense it was delayed. [+]
Where were those feelings of empathy for enslaved African Americans in the first 200 years of the institution? But when at least in the 1830s northern intellectuals, preachers, and concerned citizens came together with a unified voice against slavery, the effect was electric. We would never again as a people be quite the same. One important early, continuing, and consistent figure in the long struggle to end slavery was Oliver Johnson. Born in 1809, Johnson joined political passion and Quaker beliefs. He worked tirelessly as an aide and follower of William Lloyd Garrison. He wrote and edited for The Liberator. He struggled through the byzantine squabbles in the movement. He raised money for the cause and helped good candidates run for office where it was feasible. He also never lost sight of his goal-to end the abominable institution of slavery in America. Steven Raffo's fine study of Oliver Johnson brings the life of this intriguing and admirable man to our attention. Raffo's work is solidly grounded in the relevant archival sources, as well as the abundant literature on abolitionism of the last half century. This book is an engaging story. It is that of a man and a time long past but worth remembering. If there is a moral, it is that good people can do good things to overcome evil.

Review Elizabeth I: Always Her Own Free Woman / Ashgate Publishing:This interdisciplinary collection by historians, cultural critics and literary scholars examines a variety of the political, social and cultural forces at work during the English Renaissance and beyond, forces that contributed to creating a wealth of artistic, literary and historical impressions of Elizabeth, her court, and the time period named after her, the Elizabethan age. Articles in the collection discuss Elizabeths' relationships, investigate the advice given her, explore connections between her court and the arts, and consider the role of Elizabeth's court in the political life of the nation. Some of the ways Elizabeth was understood and represented demonstrate society's fears and ambivalence about early modern women in power, while others celebrate her successes as England's first and only unmarried queen regnant.

Review Richard III and His Rivals: Magnates and their Motives in the Wars of the Roses / Hambledon & London:Richard III is undoubtedly the dominant personality in this collection of essays, but not in his capacity as king of England. Richard was Duke of Gloucester far longer than he was king. For most of his career, he was a subject, not a monarch, the equal of the great nobility. He is seen here in the company of his fellows: Warwick the Kingmaker, Clarence, Northumberland, Somerset, Hastings a the Wydevilles. His relations with these rivals, all of whom submitted to him or were crushed, show him in different moods and from various vantage points.

Review Ulysses S. Grant: A Bibliography (Bibliographies of the Presidents of the United States) / Praeger Publishers:In Ulysses S. Grant: A Bibliography, Dr. Kelsey has created an invaluable resource for Grant scholars. The bibliography consists of twenty chapters covering Grant's early life, his careers both as soldier and as president, his associations with various individuals, his post-presidency activities, the role alcohol played in his life, his battle with throat cancer, and ultimately, his tragic death. What makes this book truly special is that Kelsey cites not only the usual books and journals but also a wide variety of nontraditional materials ranging from manuscripts to musical scores. Additionally, she has created a list of cited journals with OCLC numbers, making precise identification of old and obscure journals easy for researchers. Kelsey's sources are varied and multidimensional: she includes scholarly, popular, and ephemeral works to present the fullest possible picture of the legendary president. Kelsey also lists many obscure sources on not only Grant but also his associates, including all his cabinet members. The work includes citations about Julia Dent Grant Other Grant family members Grant's cabinet members John Rawlins William Tecumseh Sherman Ely Parker Abraham Lincoln Libraries of all types could benefit from including this resource in the reference collection. The text might get the most use in historical society libraries, as well as in the libraries of colleges and universities. [+]
Public libraries and private individuals interested in Grant and the Civil War would also appreciate the book's comprehensive nature.
