Review The Making of a Professional: Manton S. Eddy, USA (Contributions in Military Studies) / Greenwood Press:An examination of the life of General Manton S. Eddy, this study details his experiences in World War II as leader of the U. S. 9th Infantry Division through North Africa, Sicily and France, and subsequently, as commander of XII Corps, into the heart of Germany. While much has been written about the top military leaders of this era, there is little information about corps commanders whose missions were limited to doing battle and whose organizations were tailored exclusively for this task. Eddy's career provides a model for the Army's most ambitious officers, particularly those who, like Eddy, faced the challenge without family connections or the traditional West Point education. He devoted his life to the U. S. Army, enhancing his innate talents through the incorporation of a daily program of self-education. Eddy had an excellent grasp of the basic principles of military tactics and strategy. [+]
He attained this art through home study and assiduous application at the Army's professional education institutions, in particular at the Command and General Staff College, where he served as an instructor for four years. He focused on people, quickly learning and applying basic skills to draw out their best efforts. He came to know what to expect from them in the chaos and under the pressure of combat. This facilitated his development of strong, mission-oriented subordinates. His personal goal was always to maximize all available power at the correct point for crushing his nation's enemies, and to this end, he was extraordinarily successful.

Review With Lawrence in Arabia / Kessinger Publishing:1924. Original Photographs taken by H. A. Chase and by the Author. Lowell Thomas began as a reporter for the Chicago Evening Journal. Inspired by the growing art of documentary film, Thomas set off to film the war in Europe with his wife and cameraman, Harry Chase. Depressed by the brutality of the war on the Western Front they headed for the Middle East where they would meet the man who would make them famous, Captain Lawrence. Allegedly Lawrence was introduced to Thomas as the Uncrowned King of Arabia. Thomas and Chase were invited to Feisal's desert camp where they shot moving and still pictures of Lawrence with the Arabs. The romantic and adventurous tales of this mysterious blue-eyed Arab in the garb of prince wandering the streets was a hit. [+]
This is Thomas's narrative of his adventures in the desert. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

Review React: CIA Black Ops / iUniverse.com:When John F. Kennedy was asked what he thought about media criticism of the CIA the president retorted: "The triumphs are unheralded, its failures trumpeted. " Succeeding presidents echoed similar sentiments about negative media reports. REACT: CIA BLACK OPS corrects this news imbalance. In previously undisclosed accounts of the dark side of U. S. intelligence, covert field operatives tell about CIA successes against terrorists and communists during the last twenty-five years of the Cold War. Among the successes of these unsung covert operatives was the Black Op against the Islamic terrorist cell responsible for bombing the U. S. Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983; also, the Black Op that terminated the terrorists who placed the fatal bomb aboard Pam Am flight 103 that exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988. [+]

Review Strabo of Amasia: Greek Man of Letters in Augustan Rome / Routledge:Strabo of Amasia offers an intellectual biography of Strabo, a Greek man of letters, set against the political and cultural background of Augustan Rome. It offers the first full-scale interpretation of the man and his life in English. It emphasizes the place and importance of Strabo's Geography and of geography itself within these intellectual circles. It argues for a deeper understanding of the fusion of Greek and Roman elements in the culture of the Roman Empire. Though he wrote in Greek, Strabo must be regarded as an 'Augustan' writer like Virgil or Livy.

Review Alexander the Great: A Reader / Routledge:With his unprecedented conquests from Greece in the west to India in the East, Alexander the Great was the type of man that legends are made of; therein lies the problem for those studying him. Ought we to accept the image of a dashing king enjoying a string of spectacular successes, or adopt a more cynical evaluation, taking note of all the negative aspects of his reign? In the light of the evidence at our disposal, does he even deserve to be called "Great"? This exciting new volume is an indispensable guide for undergraduates to the study of Alexander the Great, showing the problems of the ancient source material, and making it clear that there is no single approach to be taken. The eleven thematic chapters contain a broad selection of the most significant published articles about Alexander, examining the main areas of debate and discussion:the sources; Alexander's background; Alexander's aims; Alexander and the Greeks; Alexander and Asia; Alexander, India and the Final Years; Alexander as General; Alexander and "The unity of Mankind"; Alexander and Deification; Alexander and Conspiracies; Alexander: The 'Great'? The Reader has the distinctive feature of translating a substantial number of the more inaccessible primary sources; each chapter is also prefaced with a succinct introduction to the topic under consideration.

Review Lee's Lieutenants (Lees Lieutenants 3 Vol Set CL Tsp) / Scribner Book Company:A towering landmark in Civil War literature, long considered one of the great masterpieces of military history - now available in a one-volume abridgment. Lee's Lieutenants: A Study in Command is the most colorful and popular of Douglas Southall Freeman's works. A sweeping narrative that presents a multiple biography against the flame-shot background of the American Civil War, it is the story of the great figures of the Army of Northern Virginia who fought under Robert E. Lee. Dr. Freeman describes the early rise and fall of General Beauregard, the developing friction between Jefferson Davis and Joseph E. Johnston, the emergence and failure of a number of military charlatans, and the triumphs of unlikely men at crucial times. He also describes the rise of the legendary "Stonewall" Jackson and traces his progress in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and into Richmond amid the acclaim of the South. The Confederacy won resounding victories throughout the war, but seldom easily or without tremendous casualties. Death was always on the heels of fame, but the men who survived - among them Jackson, Longstreet, and Ewell - developed as commanders and men. [+]
Lee's Lieutenants follows these men to the costly battle at Gettysburg, through the deepening twilight of the South's declining military might, and finally to the collapse of Lee's command and his formal surrender in 1865. To his unparalleled descriptions of men and operations, Dr. Freeman adds an insightful analysis of the lessons learned and their bearing upon the future military development of the nation. Accessible at last in a one-volume edition abridged by noted Civil War historian Stephen W. Sears, Lee's Lieutenants is essential reading for all Civil War buffs, students of war, and admirers of the historian's art as practiced at its very highest level. When Douglas Southall Freeman's original three-volume version of Lee's Lieutenants appeared in the 1940s, it marked a high point in Civil War history, and the books were lauded not only for their scholarship but for their elegant writing. This monument of Civil War literature has been skillfully abridged by one of the most noted present-day Civil War historians, Stephen W. Sears. The new one-volume abridgement retains the core material of the original and makes Freeman's fine writing available in a much more accessible format.
