Review The Muslim Bonaparte / Princeton University Press:

This text focuses on the tension between the two experiences of Ali Pasha - the diplomatic and the cultural. It places the history of Greece in the context of European history, as well as that of Ottoman decline, and demonstrates the ways in which contemporary European visions of Greece, particularly those generated by Romanicist philhellenism, contributed to a form of "orientalism" in the south Balkans. Greece, a territory never formally colonized by Western Europe, was subject instead to a surrogate form of colonial control, one in which the country's history and culture, rather than its actual land, was annexed, invaded and colonized.

Review When I Was Small-i Wan Kwikws: A Grammatical Analysis of St'at'imc Oral Narratives (First Nations Language Series) / Univ of British Columbia Pr:

This book is a collection of the personal life histories of four female St'at'imc elders: Beverley Frank, Gertrude (Gertie) Ned, Laura Thevarge, and Rose Agnes Whitley. These elders are among the last remaining fluent speakers of St'at'imcets, (also known as Lillooet), a severely endangered Northern interior Salish language spoken in the southwest interior of British Columbia. Their stories are presented in the original St'at'imcets as well as in English translation. In addition, a morpheme-by-morpheme gloss is provided for the purposes of linguistic analysis. These texts are among the longest annotated oral narratives for any Salish language. They are also almost unique among First Nations narratives in consisting of personal memories rather than of myths or legends. The stories contain historical information about events in the Lillooet area, the traditional St'at'imc way of life, and the consequences of contact with Western culture. They provide first-hand accounts of what it was like to be a female child growing up in the 1930s and 1940s within St'at'imc communities and in residential schools. "When I Was Small - I Wan Kwikws" will be of interest to members of St'at'imc communities, including teachers and curriculum developers, and to linguists, anthropologists, and others studying the St'at'imc, their culture, and their language.

Review The Pivot of the Universe: Nasir al-Din Shah and the Iranian Monarchy, 1831-1896 PUBLICATION CANCELLED / I. B. Tauris:

When he was assassinated in 1896, Nasir al-Din Shah had occupied the Peacock throne for nearly half a century. A colorful, complex figure, he is frequently portrayed as indolent and indulgent. Yet he was in many ways an effective ruler who displayed remarkable resilience in the face of dilemmas and vulnerabilities shared by most monarchs of the Islamic world in the nineteenth century. The Pivot of the Universe is the first biography of this fascinating monarch. In it Amanat traces Nasir al-Din Shah's transformation from an insecure crown prince, and later an erratic boy-king, to a ruler with substantial control over his government and foreign policy. He provides a vivid picture of the political culture that determined Nasir al-Din Shah's behavior and, ultimately, his conception of government: the mode of succession in an urbanizing nomadic dynasty, the complicated relationships of the harem and his family, and the fatherly role of his guardian-ministers. Based on extensive research into public and private papers, illustrated with drawings and photographs from the period, this book offers a fresh interpretation both of the significance of Nasir al-Din Shah and the way in which the Iranian monarchy, the centerpiece of an ancient political order, withstood and adjusted to the challenges of modern times.

Review Pepper Mountain / Taylor and Francis:

The political history of late Imperial/early modern China and the relationship between China's traditional political culture and the rapidly changing political environment of China today are examined through this study of the iconic figure of Yang Jisheng. Born in 1516, Yang had a brief and traumatic career as a junior official in the middle Ming dynasty, before being executed in 1555 for criticising the politics of the imperial state. Over the ensuring 450 years, a variety of constituencies within China have appropriated and deployed Yang's memory in different ways to promote their own political agendas. In recent years, as China has sought to come to grips with the ideological decline of socialism and the need for a new foundation for public morality, there has been a revival of interest in figures like Yang Jisheng, whose legacy is once again being taken up by actors on the contemporary political scene. This is an important study of the power of political myth in China, past and present.

Review A Man of Honour: Adam Czartoryski as a Statesman of Russia and Poland, 1795-1831 / Oxford University Press, USA:

This is a study of the extraordinary political career of Prince Adam Czartoryski, a Polish patriot who rose to become foreign minister of the Russian Empire under Tsar Alexander I. A controversial figure of both Poland and Russia, Czartoryski played a leading role in the struggle against Napoleon Bonaparte and was instrumental in the establishment of a Polish state by the Congress of Vienna. Zawadzki's scholarly and perceptive account, based on intensive research, explores the personal, political, ideological, and economic bases of Czartoryski's long association with Russia. He assesses his role in international relations during the Napoleonic era, and examines his contribution to the cause of enlightened reform. A Man of Honour sets Czartoryski in his context as a major figure in the political history of early nineteenth-century Europe and deepens our understanding of the complex elements at work in the founding of modern Poland.
