Review Wolsey / Kessinger Publishing:1930. This study of Wolsey makes no pretense to detail. Its object is to establish character and motive in him and his contemporaries. To the particulars of his life no one can pretend to add much since the recent work of Professor Pollard. Our literature as a whole approves the relocation called The Reformation. The nation has long and rightly ascribed to the Reformation the qualities on which it prides itself. On this account the general bias has lain towards the better interpretation of motive in those who promoted the great change and the worse in those who impeded it. The just truth lying between the two distortions is often so novel as to sound paradoxical. It should be presented; and the author hopes the reader will agree that where he set down what may seem unusual, he has given his reasons for each conclusion.

Review Gibbon and the 'Watchmen of the Holy City': The Historian and his Reputation, 1776-1815 / Oxford University Press, USA:The subject of this book is the story of the conflict between Gibbon and those he mockingly dubbed the "Watchmen of the Holy City," and it explores the ramifications of an elusive aspect of authorship. By considering the sequence of interactions between the historian and his readership, Womersley makes possible a more intimate understanding of what might be called Gibbon's experience of himself. At the same time he deepens our knowledge of the conditions of English authorship during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Review Suetonius: The Scholar and His Caesars / Yale Univ Pr:Seutonius, a Roman historian, was the author of "The Lives of the Caesars". This biography sets the historian's career and his method of dealing with his subject matter in the context of Roman society in the early Empire, and draws a picture of the coherence of Suetonius's life, appointments, scholarship and literary activities. Seutonius is presented as a man of learning, rather than as a failed narrative historian. This portrait takes account of recent evidence concerning his life and seeks to clarify the character of "The Lives of the Caesars" as a description of emperors and Roman imperial society by a scholarly biographer who himself was in the service of a scholarly Caesar - the Emperor Hadrian.

Review My early life: A roving commission / Macmillan Pub. Co:When we think of Churchill, a picture comes to mind of a defiant bulldog, well along in years, cigar firmly clenched, brandy at hand, the famous "V for Victory" salute. At the height of his powers in WW II, Churchill was in his sixties. But once upon a time he was young and in this immensely absorbing story, written when he was barely 30, we learn first hand what it means to be driven by destiny. His actions were always a little larger than life and his escapades, mainly fighting, were wild and reckless. He loved the glory of war, and after every campaign wrote a book. The result was that by the time he was 25 he was rich and famous. He was also filled with purpose (politics) and ambition (the top). This is the story of how he began.

Review The winning of Canada;: A chronicle of Wolfe, (Chronicles of Canada series ... ed. by G. M. Wrong and H. H. Langton. [v. 11]) / Brook & company:The Winning of Canada a Chronicle of Wolf is volume 11 in a 15 volume set of books written by various authors covering Canadian history. William Wood was a 19th century historian and author. In the author's note to this volume Wood writes: "Any life of Wolfe can be artificially simplified by treating his purely military work as something complete in itself and not as a part of a greater whole. But, since such treatment gives a totally false idea of his achievement, this little sketch, drawn straight from original sources, tries to show him as he really was, a co-worker with the British fleet in a war based entirely on naval strategy and inseparably connected with international affairs of world-wide significance. The only simplification attempted here is that of arrangement and expression. ".

Review T.E. Lawrence Revised (Twayne's English Authors Series) / Twayne Publishers:Twaynes English Authors SeriesSeries Editors: Frank Day, Clemson University Joseph M. Flora, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Pattie Cowell, Colorado State University Ruth K. MacDonald A volume in Twaynes Authors Series of literary criticism offers a critical introduction to the life and work of a particular writer, to the history and influence of a literary movement, or to the development of a literary genre. Primarily devoted to critical interpretation and discussion of an authors work, the study not only takes account of major literary trends and important contributions in scholarship and criticism but also provides new critical insights and an original point of view. Authors Series volumes are rooted in the original works themselves and address readers ranging from advanced high school students to university professors. The book suggests to the informed reader new ways of considering a writers work. A reader new to the work under examination will, after reading the Authors Series study, be compelled to turn to the originals, bringing to the reading a basic knowledge and fresh critical perspectives. Lawrence of Arabia was not only a brilliant adventurer, but a brilliant writer. His Seven Pillars of Wisdom is one of the finest British autobiographies of the twentieth century, and this book attempts to show the reader why. T. [+]
E. Lawrence looks carefully at Lawrences painful search for a cultural and sexual identity, as well as for an artistic form in which to encapsulate his experiences in Arabia. It also discusses what his R. A. F. memoir The Mint reveals and conceals about his life in the postwar period. It tackles the controversy about his truthfulness, and it probes his search for mystical transcendence. But most of all, T. E. Lawrence explains why Lawrence is studied; because he had a style at once personal and epic, because his characterization of himself and others remains both sharply etched and teasingly obscure, and because he discusses the problems of life, sexuality, politics, and art in a perennially modern way.
