Review International Behavioural and Social Sciences Library: Classics from the Tavistock Press / Routledge:

The Tavistock Institute holds a unique place in the development of the social and behavioural sciences. Established in 1947, the focus of the organisation has always been on the study of human relations in the context of the family, the work group and the larger organisation. Constantly innovative, the Institute has been a pioneer of such key methodologies as group dynamics, actionresearch and organisational development. Tavistock Press was established as a co-operative venture between the Institute and Routledge & Kegan Paul (RKP) in the 1950s and produced a series of major contributions across the social sciences. Continuing late into the 1980s the activities of the Press mirrored those of the Institute and published groundbreaking works by a number of eminent academics including Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, D. A. Winnicott and Elliot Jaques. This collection makes available, in facsimile, a selection of those important works which have gone out of print or are difficult to locate. The volumes are available individually and as minisets, structured around those areas Tavistock helped to create, as well as the more established fields to which it made significant contribu.

Review Radiological Protection (Landolt-Bornstein: Numerical Data and Functional Relationships in Science and Technology - New Series) / Springer:

The volume Radiological Protection is not only a compilation of numerical data and functional relationships for practical purposes. Rather a comprehensive accompanying text is intended to impart to the scientific or professional user of Radiological Protection both data, the concepts and scientific bases of the discipline devoted to prevention of health risks to man from exposure to ionizing radiations and radionuclides. It contains contributions of experts internationally qualified in scientific disciplines or subjects such as radiation physics, biology and medicine, external and internal dosimetry of ionizing radiation and radionuclides, decontamination and decorporation of radionuclides, physical and biological measuring techniques, assessment of radiation shielding (restricted to an extent being necessary for completion of tasks of practical radiological protection, specifically in the field of lower energies). The CD-ROM delivered with the hardcopy of the volume contains the full text of the volume and in addition information and data, which would be beyond the scope of the printed version, within the interactive programme SISy (for MS-Windows only). These refer e. g. to decay data of radionuclides or normalized excretion functions for monitoring workers by quantitative assessment of intakes of radionuclides and calculation of resulting doses.

Review The Peaceful Warrior Five-Hour Audio Course (A One Day Training):

During his junior year at the University of California, Dan Millman first stumbled upon his mentor (nicknamed Socrates) at an all-night gas station. At the time, Millman hoped to become a world-champion gymnast. "To survive the lessons ahead, you're going to need far more energy than ever before," Socrates warned him that night. "You must cleanse your body of tension, free your mind of stagnant knowledge, and open your heart to the energy of true emotion. " From there, the unpredictable Socrates proceeded to teach Millman the "way of the peaceful warrior. " At first Socrates shattered every preconceived notion that Millman had about academics, athletics, and achievement. But eventually Millman stopped resisting the lessons, and began to try on a whole new ideology-one that valued being conscious over being smart, and strength in spirit over strength in body. Although the character of the cigarette-smoking Socrates seems like a fictional, modern-day Merlin, Millman asserts that he is based on an actual person. Certain male readers especially appreciate the coming-of-age theme, the haunting love story with the elusive woman Joy, and the challenging of Western beliefs about masculine power and success. -Gail Hudson -This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. [+]
From AudioFile This moving, largely true, story, with details admittedly drawn from emotional rather than factual memory, is told here with loving respect for the old man and his timeless ideas. "The warrior's life is not about imagined perfection or victory; it's about love," the athlete is told by his mentor. Living in alignment with the heart in the moment, free of striving and performance pressure, is the valuable lesson that channels through this somewhat long but well-told story. T.
