Review History of Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge / Cambridge University Press:Since its foundation in 1766, Addenbrooke's Hospital has strongly influenced both the development of medical practice and the social history of Cambridge. As one of Britain's first Voluntary Hospitals serving the needs of the sick, and as a center of medical teaching, Addenbrooke's has always been a focal point in the community as well as a prestigious institute in the wider medical sphere. This authoritative and absorbing account of the Hospital traces in detail its history and development, from its benefaction in 1719 by John Addenbrooke, through its early years of expansion, reforms, and modernization, and over the period of the two world wars. The final chapters bring the story up to date, with an account of the changes that have been seen since 1948, including the effects of the major reforms in the National Health Service and the establishment of a Clinical School. The authors have a long and close association with Addenbrooke's and have written a book that reflects their unequalled knowledge and insight into the medical history of Cambridge. Embellished with evocative and often rare documentary illustrations, this book will be of the greatest interest and value to all those associated with Addenbrooke's, past and present-clinicians, nursing and administrative staff, students, and patients as well as to anyone with an interest in social and medical history.

Review Current Dilemmas in Medical-Care Rationing / University Press of America:This unique book covers all parameters of medical-care rationing. The author discusses the reasons for medical-care rationing, the available methods for applying it, the philosophical principles used to determine how it is to be done, and finally its political realities in a democracy. Shenkin presents a balanced consideration of all issues. He makes clear why medical-care rationing problems are so difficult to resolve and why, actually, they may be irresolvable. He argues that the realities of human nature and the realities of the political process of democracy often preclude the actual accomplishment of rationing medical care. Contents: Why of All Consumer Items Should Medical Care Be Rationed Other Than By the Marketplace?; What Parts of Medical Care Need to Be Rationed?; How Can Medical Care Be Rationed: General Categorization of Methods; Specific Methods; What Principles Can Be Used to Ration Medical Care?; Final Considerations; Conclusions; References; Index.

Review Reaching the Poor With Health, Nutrition, And Population Services: What Works, What Doesn't, And Why / World Bank Publications:This volume presents eleven case studies that document how well or poorly health, nutrition, and population programs have reached disadvantaged groups in the countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America where they were undertaken. The studies were commissioned by the Reaching the Poor Program, undertaken by the Word Bank in cooperation with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Dutch and Swedish governments, in an effort to find better ways of ensuring that health, nutrition, and population programs benefit the neediest. These case studies, reinforced by other material gathered by the Reaching the Poor Program, indicate clearly that health programs do not have to be inequitable. Although most health, nutrition, and population services achieve much lower coverage among disadvantaged groups than among the better-off, many significant and instructive exceptions exist. These show that the poor can be reached much more effectively than at present and point to! potentially promising strategies for doing so.

Review California Health Report / RAND Corporation:Communities throughout the United States are increasingly engaged in the process of measuring health in order to address pressing health care needs, develop better programs and policies, and to improve the quality of life of their residents. These initiatives have resulted in the development of detailed health reports and shorter report cards at state and community levels. In many instances, state and local communities have used these reports to launch either wide scale and/or targeted health improvement initiatives. In the spirit of further developing innovative means for measuring the health of communities, we created the California Health Report.

Review Accessibility and Utilization: Geographical Perspectives on Health Care Delivery / Sage Publications Ltd:This book combines a wide-ranging theoretical view of accessibility and utilization with empirical experience from a variety of comparable health-care delivery systems - those of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The authors focus on primary health-care provision, but also consider secondary and tertiary facilities. Where previous medical geography texts have dealt with disease ecology, this book provides a comprehensive review of recent geographical research into the health service system and its utilization. The book is clearly structured and well written, enabling students to grasp the essentials of the subject. The skilful use of references will permit more advanced students to follow up the topics in greater detail.
