Review Can Your Marketing Budget Support New Channel Development? / IDC Research:This IDC Insight presents an analysis of how marketing investment must increase to engage indirect sales channels for technology firms. The modeled shift in MBR, or marketing investment as a percentage of revenue, versus the percentage of indirect sales revenue is provided for hardware and software companies, as well as key shifts in marketing mix for each sector. The data presented in this study is from IDC's CMO Advisory 2004 Technology Marketing Benchmarks Survey. Field research for IDC's CMO Advisory 2004 Technology Marketing Benchmarks Survey was conducted from April through July 2004. The survey included interviews with more than 150 senior marketing executives from more than 100 of the world's leading hardware, software, IT services, and telecommunications vendors. The interviews were conducted over the telephone or in person and were guided by a 32-question survey instrument. Interviews lasted approximately 60–90 minutes, and either one interview or two interviews were required to complete a thorough response from each business or business unit. In their survey response, most respondents spent significant time in their internal data collection efforts before engaging in the direct interview(s) with the IDC project team. To ensure comparability of responses, each respondent was supplied with a detailed glossary providing an explanation of terms in the survey. To further ensure comparability, all questions related to the distribution of marketing spending or staffing were designed on the basis of marketing activities, not by functional area names. [+]
This approach encouraged consistency in the classification of responses. Additional background on methodology is provided in Marketing Budget Planner 2005: Benchmarks and Key Performance Indicators (IDC #31755, August 2004).

Review Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) Enterprise Applications Market Highlights, 2004 / IDC Research:This IDC update highlights the ongoing market developments and announcements in the enterprise applications market in the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) region or APEJ. The highlights include the following: The enterprise awareness of Linux has certainly increased and is set to expand further in the enterprise applications operating platform as companies seek to lower their IT investment costs. With the maturing of the applications market, the consolidation in the vendors' community is inevitable as the affluent global software providers seek to expand their sweet spots or enrich their product offerings through acquisition. In addition, software vendors are busy repackaging or customizing their off-the-shelf packages to meet the demands of the small medium enterprises. The importance of business analytics in the enterprise segment has drawn higher priority as they strive to edge out their rivals with improved decision-making.

Review Macromedia ColdFusion MX 7 / IDC Research:This IDC study examines the latest release of ColdFusion from Macromedia and places it in context with previous releases. IDC believes several new features examined in this document make ColdFusion MX 7 an important product enhancement. This latest release now includes Flash Forms/XForms, PDF, FlashPaper printing, and a built-in professional quality report builder. It also extends the reach of Web business applications to PDAs and cell phones. This study will allow the reader to gain an understanding of: Each of the new functions The benefits of each function ColdFusion MX 7's niche in the succession of ColdFusion enhancements and in the overall Macromedia product suite "When Macromedia purchased Allaire early in 2003, to its great credit, it rewrote the entire ColdFusion code base, converting it from an interpreted C-based application to a 'compiled on first use,' multithreaded J2EE application with virtually infinite scalability and portability to any server supporting the Java Virtual Machine (Windows, Linux, IBM WebSphere, BEA Weblogic, Sun One). The result was ColdFusion MX, a robust, high-performance Web development platform," said Steve McClure, a program VP with IDC's Software Research Group. "Macromedia has followed quickly with a second set of enhancements to the product, ColdFusion MX 7. IDC believes these enhancements are more significant than those in version 6. ".

Review Western European Cellular Services Forecast, 2Q04 Update / IDC Research:This IDC study assesses developments in the mobile market for Western Europe and shows key trends in usage and spending growth. Developments in mobile usage are provided by air interface as well as by contract/prepaid subscription. Spending is provided for voice, data traffic, data application, SMS, MMS, mcommerce, telematics, and other spending. The study asserts that the proportion of operator spending from new data services will grow significantly over the coming years as the data offerings are adopted by users. SMS will remain as a spending stream, but new data services led by information services, email, games, and other forms of messaging are starting to become more important for operators, especially toward the end of the forecast period. According to Lars Vestergaard, research manager with IDC's European Mobile and Wireless Communications research service, "The market for new data services could become very positive, but this will require much more of the mobile players than we are seeing today. "As long as there continues to be problems with the build-up of new networks, and pricing of data services continues to be very prohibitive, incentives to users to take on new services are very low in the short term. Players should rethink their strategies and move away from a very competitive focus to take a role of educating the market instead, as this is the only way we will truly see the successes outnumber the failures — players are forced to work together instead of against each other.
