Review Employee Assistance Programs: What Works and What Doesn't / Praeger Publishers:Employee assistance, as a profession and as a practical endeavor, is in serious trouble. The field is in an advanced state of dissolution. Why have employee assistance programs, which seemed so promising when they were initiated, fallen so far short of their potential? There are many reasons, including a preoccupation on the part of employee assistance professionals with vague notions of "change" and "diversity" without a corresponding concrete idea of what those terms mean, why they are desirable goals, or how to achieve them. There is also a lack of emphasis on management's role in anchoring employee assistance in the worksite. The solutions that are often proposed fall into three categories: trying to be all things to all people by including welfare-to-work and outplacement functions; discarding the traditional structure of employee assistance altogether while chasing the latest fad; and integrating employee assistance with managed mental health care. All three will fail, because none addresses the need for employee assistance to return to its traditional roots, recover its purpose and vitality, and resurrect its true mission. This book does address that need.

Review Temps: The Many Faces of the Changing Workplace / Cornell Univ Pr:Now firmly established as fixtures of the American workplace, temporary employees comprise a much-discussed but still poorly understood segment of the labor force. In this consciousness-raising book, Jackie Krasas Rogers explores the realities of temporary work from the points of view of workers, agencies, and clients, focusing especially on issues of race, gender, power, and identity. Rogers investigates the situations of two very different kinds of temporary worker-lawyers and those in clerical settings-and finds contrasts and similarities between the two groups' reasons for seeking temporary work, the type of tasks performed, and the value attached to that labor. The goals of temporary workers can be at odds with the interests of the agency and the client, the other players in the power triad of "temping. " Where clerical workers often see temporary employment as a stepping stone to a permanent job, many find upward mobility more illusory than real. Because temporary workers can be called in and let go at will or whim, and they have no established social relations in the workplace, they often work harder than permanent workers. Rogers, one of the authoritative scholars of temporary work in the United States, uses extensive archival and field data-including notes from her own work as an office temp-to put a face on America's temporary workforce.

Review The Object of Labor: Commodification in Socialist Hungary / University Of Chicago Press:Did socialist policies leave the economies of Eastern Europe unprepared for current privatization efforts? Under communist rule, were rural villages truly left untouched by capitalism? In this historical ethnography of rural Hungary, Martha Lampland argues not only that the transition to capitalism was well under way by the 1930s, but that socialist policies themselves played a crucial role in the development of capitalism by transforming conceptions of time, money, and labor. Exploring the effects of social change thrust upon communities against their will, Lampland examines the history of agrarian labor in Hungary from World War I to the early 1980s. She shows that rural workers had long been subject to strict state policies similar to those imposed by collectivization. Since the values of privatization and individualism associated with capitalism characterized rural Hungarian life both prior to and throughout the socialist period, capitalist ideologies of work and morality survived unscathed in the private economic practices of rural society. Lampland also shows how labor practices under socialism prepared the workforce for capitalism. By drawing villagers into factories and collective farms, for example, the socialist state forced farmers to work within tightly controlled time limits and to calculate their efforts in monetary terms. Indeed, this control and commodification of rural labor under socialism was essential to the transformation to capitalism.

Review The Knowledge Medium: Designing Effective Computer-Based Learning Environments / Information Science Publishing:This timely new publication examines the notion of computer as medium and what such an idea might mean for education. The Knowledge Medium: Designing Effective Computer-Based Educational Learning Environments suggests that the understanding of computers as a medium may be a key to re-envisioning educational technology. Because the subject is interdisciplinary, combining science with the humanities, the theoretical discussion draws from a broad range of disciplines: psychology, educational theory, film criticism, and computer science.
