Review English Job Titles in Germany: Doing their Job? / VDM Verlag:

German job advertisements are full of English job titles, which sometimes poses a riddle for job seekers. Everything began in business language; some industries were established in English speaking countries, e. g. the IT and telecommunications industries, and hence words for newly developed products and names for specialists were, of course, in English. And so, the first expressions spread over Germany and were used because no German equivalent existed, or due to translation problems. This paper will concentrate on the use of Anglicisms as job titles used in Germany. Ariane Seitz chose interesting and linguistically striking job titles for this book and made an analysis over a period of about five decades. This book is directed to graduates looking for their first job, students of linguistic, human resources employees and all people who are interested in the Germans\' habit of using English terms.

Geared toward anyone switching careers, running a small business, or just striving to advance in a current job, the book-by veteran career coaches and marketing consultants David Andrusia and Rick Haskins-argues persuasively that one must carefully create a personal brand and aggressively market it like soup or mouthwash in order to get ahead in these ultracompetitive times. " They begin with an extensive but clearly articulated "career self-evaluation and brand assessment" to facilitate development of a "Personal Branding Statement" that is specifically shaped by your skills and personality traits in addition to marketplace needs. They then focus on "packaging your brand" with the right name, collateral material, and even office space, and "making yourself known" through properly framed written matter and personal contacts. Concluding chapters offer specific suggestions on attaining promotions and changing careers, as well as using the concept in other special circumstances. -Howard Rothman Branding is the hottest, most talked about phenomenon in the business world today. Review Construction Workers, U.S.A.: (Contributions in Labor Studies) / Greenwood Press:

A lively, personalized account incorporating objective analysis and solid information accumulated over 42 years, this book presents a graphic picture of the construction industry from an insider's point of view. The volume focuses on the culture of construction workers, the management style of contractors, and the structural and organizational nature of the industry. It considers such unique features of construction as its craft-oriented technology, decentralized decision-making by workers on the job site, and non-bureaucratic methods of field supervision. Using the research of others, government publications, and his own intimate experience in the industry, the author provides an insightful view of a unique industry in modern America. The book opens with an overview of the industry, illustrating how construction is organized, the craft breakdown, and the cultural values of the crafts. It then considers such topics as workers' job satisfaction, craft organization of the work, and the dangerous nature of construction. Separate chapters are devoted to women construction workers, a recent phenomenon in the industry, and to minorities and the role of affirmative action. In conclusion, the book argues that construction is significant both as a major industry and as a model for organizing work to produce worker satisfaction.

Review Why Do We Have to Work? - a search for understanding, peace of mind, and an alternative measure of success / Graduate Group:

Back in the hunting and gathering days, the answer to the question "Why do we have to work?" was straightforward: you hunted because you were hungry, skinned animals because you needed clothing, and built a shelter for protection. In today's world the answer is more complicated. "Work" nowadays involves carrying out highly specialized tasks that seem to have no direct link to providing for our survival - how and why did this happen? "Why Do We Have to Work?" helps make sense of this confusing situation, tracing the common link between the workday of the hunter & gatherer, the farmer, the 1st century pottery maker, the assembly line worker of the 1800s, and today's video game programmers. Also included is an explanation of why we have to use money - why the complications of bartering force all communities with multiple goods & services to use some sort of "medium of exchange," be it beads or dollar bills. "Why Do We Have to Work?" also questions the wisdom of one of the side repercussions of our modern workday: the assumption that our basis for happiness should come from the wealth, status, and identity we derive from our careers. It presents the alternative guideline that instead aims for a balance of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions.
