Review Finding Your True Calling: The Handbook for People Who Still Don't Know What They Want to be When They Grow Up But Can't Wait to Find Out / Changing Course:

Have You Found Your True Calling? True Calling? Yeah. True Calling. The reason you're alive. Your personal mission in life. Your raison d'etre. Your True Calling. If you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, take a couple seconds to complete this quick quiz: Are you doing EXACTLY the kind of work that makes you want to leap out of bed each morning excited to begin a new day? Does your work satisfy a need deep within to express yourself, your talents, your values, your unique and precious gifts? Does your work allow for a balanced life - one that leaves time for family and friends, for exercise or hobbies, for you? Are you doing what you love and loving what you do? If you answered "yes" to all of these questions, congratulations! There's a good chance that you have achieved what the Buddhist's call "Right Livelihood. " If you haven't yet found the work you were meant to do, keep reading. You're about to find your true calling - and when you find that calling that is uniquely yours, your life will be transformed. Guaranteed. [+]
"The way to find out about your happiness," said renowned mythology scholar Joseph Campbell, "is to keep your mind on those moments when you feel most happy, when you are really happy - not excited, not just thrilled, but deeply happy. " Read that paragraph again. It's awesome. Now ask yourself how you feel each day as you get ready for work. It probably sounds something like this. Your alarm clock buzzes you awake. You drag yourself out of bed, dreading another day at a job that's high on stress and short on satisfaction. I guess what I'm asking you is this: Are You Truly Happy Working In A Career That's Fulfilling And Enjoyable? Because when you really love your work you greet the day like this: You don't need an alarm clock because you can't wait to get out of bed and dive into another workday where your work feels more like play. Maybe you think it's too late. Maybe you believe that you've somehow missed your True Calling and that… well… you're not getting any younger. Nonsense. The 19th century writer George Eliot got it right when she said, "You're never too old to be what you might have been. ".

Review Shipbuilders of the Venetian Arsenal: Workers and Workplace in the Preindustrial City (The Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science) / The Johns Hopkins University Press:

The master ship builders of seventeenth-century Venice formed part of what was arguably the greatest manufacturing complex in early modern Europe. As many as three thousand masters, apprentices, and laborers regularly worked in the city's enormous shipyards. This is the social history of the men and women who helped maintain not only the city's dominion over the sea but also its stability and peace. Drawing on a variety of documents that include nearly a thousand petitions from the shipbuilders to the Venetian governments as well as on parish records, inventories, and wills, Robert C. Davis offers a vivid and compelling account of these early modern workers. He explores their mentality and describes their private and public worlds (which in some ways, he argues, prefigured the factories and company towns of a later era). He uncovers the far-reaching social and cultural role played by women in this industrial community. He shows how the Venetian government formed its shipbuilders into a militia to maintain public order. And he describes the often colorful ways in which Venetians dealt with the tensions that role provoked - including officially sanctioned community fistfights on the city's bridges. The recent decision by the Italian government to return the Venetian Arsenal to civilian control has sparked renewed interest in the subject among historians. [+]
Shipbuilders of the Venetian Arsenal offers new evidence on the ways in which large, state-run manufacturing operations furthered the industrialization process, as well as on the extent of workers' influence on the social dynamics of the early modern European city.

Review Work Options for Older Americans / University of Notre Dame Press:

While mandatory retirement has been eliminated in the United States, a myriad of policies and practices surround pensions, social security, tax law, labor contracts, and health benefits, all of which may have an impact on an older worker's decision to work or retire and an employer's decision to retain and train an older worker. In Work Options for Older Americans, Teresa Ghilarducci and John Turner assemble a critically important volume that systematically addresses many of the issues considered on a daily basis by employees and employers. Work Options for Older Americans brings together discussion of these issues by well-known economists and scholars in other fields, from the Government Accountability Office, the AARP Public Policy Institute, the U. S. Department of Labor, and academia. The book contains eleven articles, along with commentary, that deal with issues of employment opportunity and constraints for older persons, pension types and coverage, retirement choices, and public policies that promote or hinder either retirement or employment of the elderly. Contributors present effective ways to prepare for this unprecedented growth in the number of older workers. In the introduction, Teresa Ghilarducci and John Turner identify how the labor market changes dramatically as workers age and how these changes affect the ongoing bargaining between employers and workers. The question is, are the options that workers want the same as those that employers offer?.
