Review Wedding as Text: Communicating Cultural Identities Through Ritual (Communication) / Lawrence Erlbaum:A Volume in LEA's Communication Series. This book studies those who have accepted cultural difference into their daily lives in the attempt to learn how they have managed to do successfully. A wedding serves as the beginning marker of a marriage-if a couple is to manage cultural differences throughout their relationship, they must first pass the hurdle of designing a wedding ceremony. Over 10 years of study, the weddings of 113 couples from across the United States were documented through ethnography. The focus is on intercultural weddings-interracial, interethnic, interfaith, international, or interclass-because the central issue faced in any of these cases is really the same one of cultural difference. A wedding is, among other things, an identity display. This book asks the basic question: How is it possible to display different identities simultaneously? A variety of answers are detailed in the case studies provided. Six weddings are described at length in an innovative presentation style; the rest are used as shorter examples of the many issues that arise and how specific couples have coped with them. The theoretical concepts of community, ritual, identity, and meaning are given extensive consideration. Because material culture is visible it often takes on a particularly important role in these and in other examples of ritual. [+]
As a result, special attention is paid to food, clothing, and objects and their function as symbols in the complex semiotic event of a wedding. Focusing on how couples design a wedding ritual to simultaneously meet multiple and different requirements, this book provides: *extensive details of real behavior by real people (the result of the qualitative methods used in this research, specifically, ethnography); *an innovative format: six more traditional theoretical chapters-with examples integrated into the discussion-are matched to six "interludes" or detailed descriptions of the most successful examples of resolving intercultural differences; *a methodological appendix that details what was done and why these decisions were made; and *a theoretical appendix outlining the study's assumptions in detail.

Review Wedding Cakes and Cultural History / Routledge:The preparation of food, particularly that of a wedding cake, vividly illustrates how all food symbolizes traditional values. The product of a complex history, the wedding cake represents a challenge to both theories of ``structuralism'' and ``neo-structuralism. '' In Wedding Cakes and Cultural History, its fascinating history marks the occasion for a discussion of how use and meaning are involved in the creation of cultural forms. The evolution of the wedding cake can be minutely charted in a succession of recipes from Europe, America and other cultures from the late medieval period onward. In the wedding cake alone, the contemporary world can be observed taking shape.

Review Art, Marriage, and Family in the Florentine Renaissance Palace / Yale University Press:Although we live in an era when vast sums of money are lavished on wedding festivities, we are not unique: in Renaissance Italy, middle- and upper-class families spent enormous amounts on marriages that were intended to establish or consolidate the status and lineage of one or both of the respective families. This lavishly illustrated book explores the social and economic background to marriage in Renaissance Florence and discusses the objects—paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewelry, clothing, and household items—associated with marriage and ongoing family life. By analyzing urban palaces and their furnishings, Jacqueline Marie Musacchio shows how families interacted with art on a daily basis. This began at marriage, when the bride brought a dowry and the groom provided the home and its furnishings. It continued with the accumulation of objects during the marriage and the birth of children. And it ended with the redistribution of these same objects at death. Through the examination of art, documents, literature, and more, this lively book traces the life cycle of the Florentine Renaissance family through the art and objects that surrounded them in their home. .

Review The Form and Function of Ritual Dialogue in the Marriage Traditions of Celtic-language Cultures / Edwin Mellen Press:The study examines the form and function of ritual dialogue in marriage traditions, paying particular attention to the betrothal ceremony or reiteach in Gaelic Scotland, along with analogues in Brittany and Wales, while also exploring the relationship between the ritual dialogues and traditions such as flyting and bardic contest. What emerges is a picture of the multi-referential potential of this form of ritual speech and the symbolic significance which lies behind the surface meaning. The human drama of marriage is seen to be submerged within an all-encompassing symbolic event which adopts as its structure the spirit of conflict, dramatising the give and take of the relationship the community both desires and fears.

Like other social rituals, weddings are filled with traditions that everyone accepts as meaningful and necessary. But when and how did all those necessary things originate? The bouquet and the white dress? The Huppah and the smashed glass? The Muslim wedding's henna night? Or even the notion that weddings should take place in churches? Didn't they always? Marriage Customs of the World: From Henna to Honeymoons cordially invites you to explore the rites, rituals, and iconography of weddings from around the globe. Review The Wedding Present: Domestic Life Beyond Consumption / Ashgate Publishing:Using the 'wedding present' as a case study, Louise Purbrick offers an alternative analysis of contemporary domestic consumption. Focusing on gift-giving in Britain from 1945 to the present day, with comparative material from North America and Europe, Purbrick investigates the ritualized presentation of objects upon marriage and their subsequent cycles of exchange within the domestic sphere. Making historical, theoretical and methodological contributions to the analysis of contemporary consumption, the book presents new material on the enactment of exchange relationships within everyday domesticity, while re-evaluating consumption theory and examining the methodology of recent studies in consumption and domesticity. The author tests the assumption that consuming creates individual identities, by considering how the specific contexts in which consumption occurs, such as married domesticity, can limit possible versions of selfhood, arguing that consumption cannot be isolated as an explanation of individual or social formation.

Review Engendering Song: Singing and Subjectivity at Prespa Albanian Weddings (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) / University Of Chicago Press:For Prespa Albanians, both at home in Macedonia and in the diaspora, the most opulent, extravagant, and socially significant events of any year are wedding ceremonies. During days and weeks of festivities, wedding celebrants interact largely through singing, defining and renegotiating as they do so the very structure of their social world and establishing a profound cultural touchstone for Prespa communities around the world. Combining photographs, song texts, and vibrant recordings of the music with her own evocative descriptions, ethnomusicologist Jane C. Sugarman focuses her account of Prespa weddings on notions of gendered identity, demonstrating the capacity of singing to generate and transform relations of power within Prespa society. Engendering Song is an innovative theoretical work, with a scholarly importance extending far beyond southeast European studies. It offers unique and timely contributions to the analysis of music and gender, music in diaspora cultures, and the social constitution of self and subjectivity.

Review Wedding Dress across Cultures (Dress, Body, Culture) / Berg Publishers:Although the Victorian white wedding dominates western bridal dress and large portions of former colonial empires, marriage rituals vary significantly throughout the world. The Japanese, for instance, combine both traditional ceremonies with receptions utilizing western approaches to dress. In the Andes the bride will personally create a multi-layered dress to showcase her weaving skills. Berber brides in Morocco wear binding clothing that covers their faces, a notable contrast to Canadian prairie-province brides whose stylized gowns individualize and enhance body shape. This engaging book examines the evolution and ritual functions of wedding attire within the context of particular cultures. It raises questions as to the relationship between contemporary wedding attire and traditional values. It discusses the changes international migrations have had upon the wedding dress of several ethnic groups. It provides insights into numerous societal relationships to weddings, such as the ban on bridal-produced embroidery in dowries in India, the challenges individual values have to larger societal ones in themed weddings, and the relationship between the return to pre-western attire and identity politics. Exploring these issues, the authors provide unusual insights into the centrality of dress in shaping individual identity as well as its importance in reflecting cultural values and ideals.

Review Victorian Honeymoons: Journeys to the Conjugal (Cambridge Studies in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture) / Cambridge University Press:While Victorian tourism and Victorian sexuality have been the subject of much recent critical interest, there has been little research on a characteristically nineteenth-century phenomenon relating to both sex and travel: the honeymoon, or wedding journey. Although the term 'honeymoon' was coined in the eighteenth century, the ritual increased in popularity throughout the Victorian period, until by the end of the century it became a familiar accompaniment to the wedding for all but the poorest classes. Using letters and diaries of 61 real-life honeymooning couples, as well as novels from Frankenstein to Middlemarch that feature honeymoon scenarios, Michie explores the cultural meanings of the honeymoon, arguing that, with its emphasis on privacy and displacement, the honeymoon was central to emerging ideals of conjugality and to ideas of the couple as a primary social unit.
