Review A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology (3 Volume Set) (Tauris Academic Resource) / I. B. Tauris:

Embracing the whole of ancient history and literature for more than two thousand years, the three volumes of the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology provide a wealth of information on every significant figure mentioned by the Greek and Roman writers in the areas of history, philosophy, mathematics, the Arts, medicine, law, geography, architecture, and more. A full account of the works as well as the lives of the Greek and Roman writers is included. Painters, sculptors, and architects are treated at considerable length and an account is given of all their works extant or of which there is any record in the ancient writers. Care has been taken to separate articles on mythological subjects from those of an historical nature. Greek divinities are given under their Greek names and Italian divinities are given under their Latin names. The final volume contains chronological tables of Greek and Roman history, genealogical tables and a list of kings. The dictionary is especially useful for the lives of lesser-known writers. With contributors drawn from among the most distinguished scholars of the day the reissue of these volumes makes available once more an important and valuable work of classical scholarship.

Review The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1867-1893 / Thoemmes Continuum:

The "Journal of Speculative Philosophy" (JSP), published from 1867 to 1893, was the first scholarly journal in the English language without a specific theological agenda. According to its founder and editor, William Torrey Harris of the St Louis Hegelians, one-third of the journal was devoted to philosophy, one-third to art and art history, and one-third to religion. Philosophy still being broadly defined, however, the journal also included articles on psychology and other social sciences. Early issues of the journal contained many translations of German and ancient Greek philosophy, especially the German idealists and Aristotle. The journal also contained commentaries on literature and music, especially the work of Shakespeare, Goethe, and Beethoven. Harris hoped that by making the best of ancient and modern thought accessible to American readers, he would promote the growth of an original and rigorous philosophy in the New World. The strategy worked, and the JSP provided a platform for the first publications of many leading American philosophers, including John Dewey, Josiah Royce, and G. Stanley Hall. Charles S. Peirce and William James also published several of their earliest essays in the JSP. [+]
This journal is an important source for various kinds of historical and philosophical research, yet it is hard to find outside the oldest libraries. Many of the articles reprinted here are absolutely crucial to the early development of "classical" American philosophy. The journal also included programmes for Bronson Alcott's Concord Summer School in Philosophy (1879-88), an important chapter in the development of American thought. In addition, the JSP was widely enough read that some debates that began in its pages spilled over into German philosophical journals and abstracts of its issues were published in French philosophical journals. Historians and philosophers should welcome this facsimile reprinting of the full 22 volume set, which comes with a new introduction by James A. Good.

Review Ancient Building in Cyprus (Handbuch Der Orientalistik Der Alte Vordere Orient, B-Vorderasien, Lieferung 8) (Pt. 1 & 2) / Brill Academic Publishers:

The wealth of excavation in Cyprus conducted across a period of nearly a century and a half has revealed much evidence of ancient building of all functional categories. Whereas the earlier excavation concerned mainly funerary and religious contexts, more recent work has endeavoured to clarify the whole range of building in Cyprus. This picture extends over a vast range of time (ca. 10,000 years) since Cyprus is probably the place where the earliest substantial building known, the Neolithic round house style is better presented than anywhere else in the world. Certainly it was immeasurably longer lived in Cyprus than in any other region of the ancient world. This longevity of tradition became a proverbial aspect of the Cypriote character. It is the aim of this book to set forth and document this building tradition which hitherto has received no detailed exposition. After preliminary geographical and historical introductions the ancient building of Cyprus has been surveyed and analysed from the following view-points: its historical development; its design; its construction and its foreign connections. Because of the extensive and detailed coverage every effort has been made to facilitate the use of the book equally as a treatise and as a work of instant reference - e. g. [+]
by way of introductory precis, list of general references, running titles to pages and marginal rubrics. The book is also virtually a double treatment of the subject since a separate volume contains specially drawn illustrations arranged with captions on the facing pages which themselves constitute an incisive coverage of the subject matter. The book will fill several gaps in the library shelves at one and the same time: architectural history that presents all the archaeological evidence.

Far from being a simple word list this seminal reference work documents Gregory's complete vocabulary, taking account of the syntax, meaning and connotations of every occurrence of a key word in his writings. The complete Lexicon will comprise 7 volumes, totaling more than 13,000 entries. Each volume will consist of ca. 600 three-column pages.
