Review The Correspondence of Adam Ferguson (The Pickering Masters) / William Pickering:This Pickering edition of Adam Ferguson's correspondence will contain "over 400 letters", most of which have never before been published. The correspondence includes letters between Ferguson and Adam Smith, David Hume and Alexander Carlyle and many other central figures of the Scottish Enlightenment. A number of the letters are in the collections of the Edinburgh University library and the National Library of Scotland, but many have hitherto been scattered around the world in private collections. Ferguson's political ideas are clearly reflected in a series of letters to major political figures of the time including Lord Milton, Sir William Pulteney and Lord Melville. Many of the letters reflect the academic and political life of Edinburgh University. They provide a fascinating picture of the university at work during the period of the Scottish Enlightenment. Several more letters concern Ferguson's transactions with booksellers and publishers, and there are a series of letters at the time of his travels to Venice and Florence. Some more intimate letters are those of the correspondence between Ferguson and his wife Katy Burnet and their children. The Fergusons had three daughters and four sons, and Ferguson was concerned with their education and career right up to his death. At the age of ninety-two he was advising his son, John, on the advancement of John's naval career.

Review Gaius Marius: A Political Biography (Hiddingh-Currie) / Unisa Press:Though he may not have realised it, Gaius Marius caused through his political ambition the beginnings of the fall of the Roman Republic. Presenting this view, Evans traces here Marius' rise to pre-eminence, his contribution to legislation and his involvement with other politicians. It was other politicians, this work argues, that emulated or even exceeded a dangerous precedent Marius had set.

Review Giacomo Agostini: Champion of Champions / Breedon Books Publishing:Fifteen world titles - eight at 500cc - and twelve Isle of Man TT victories in an extraordinary 17-year career make Giacomo Agostini the most successful racing motorcyclist in the history of the sport. His precocious talent and the courage and flair he demonstrated as a rider throughout his long career marked him out from all his contemporaries. Yet, until now, no full-length study of his spectacular career has been published in English. In this fully illustrated and in-depth new study Mick Walker reassesses Agostini's remarkable record and explores the personal and technical background to his achievement. He writes of Agostini's birth in northern Italy, his success as a teenager in hillclimbs and other local events and his sudden appearance on the world stage as Mike Hailwood's teammate at MV in 1965. No one then could have predicted the matchless run of success that followed - no less than 122 Grand Prix wins. He mastered every course he encountered - the TT circuit, Spa, the Nurburgring - and outrode all his rivals during a decade of dominance. Agostini turned briefly to motor racing after he retired from motorcycles, then went into motorcycle team management with Yamaha and Cagiva, and was closely involved in the design of the MV Agusta F4 superbike. Mick Walker covers this less-well known side of Agostini's career, but he concentrates on the motorcycling years and on the motorcycles themselves. There is a technical analysis of the bikes Agostini rode and developed, in particular the 350cc and 500cc MVs he used at his peak. [+]

Review Records of the Dawn of Photography: Talbot's Notebooks P & Q / Cambridge University Press:This is the first publication of the two most important notebooks created by William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877), the inventor of negative/positive photography. Notebooks P and Q span the period from the first public announcement of photography in 1839 through the 1843 plateau of Talbot's researches. They record both his false starts and his triumphs. While the emphasis is on the new art of photography, there is substantial reference to chemistry, electricity, light, optics, and railroad motive power. The notebook pages are reproduced in full, preserving the tempo and organization of Talbot's thoughts, and keeping his sketches in context. This book will fascinate anyone interested in the history of science or technology.

Review Rediscovering Antiquity: Karl Weber and the Excavation of Herculaneum, Pompeii and Stabiae / Cambridge University Press:Examines the early history of the excavations at three important sites of classical antiquity, which came to light in 1738 through the life and work of Karl Jakob Weber, who supervised these investigations from 1750 to 1765. While many of his contemporaries sought only the recovery of precious antiquities to the exclusion of the architectural remains, Weber sought to retrieve evidence of the ancient urban fabric and to relate his discoveries to their archaeological context, thereby establishing the first systematic approach for the excavations. He also proposed a revolutionary manner for publishing his findings, in which all of the works of art from an individual site would appear together with detailed plans, drawings, and commentary drawn from classical and modern sources. His methods were to influence all subsequent publications of contemporary rediscoveries throughout Europe. Based on original excavation documents and plans, contemporary correspondence and the extant archeological remains.

Review Ray's a Laugh / Scalo Publishers:One of the most consistently inventive artists of recent times, Los Angeles-based Ed Ruscha has been a pioneer in the use of language and imagery drawn from the popular media. From his early powerful word paintings to his influential artist books of the sixties and seventies to his recent colorful views of generic mountains, Ruscha has investigated the spaces between highways and journeys, images and words, abstraction and representation, public imagery and the contemporary landscape. In this publication, which accompanies a major retrospective exhibition organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D. C. and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, Neal Benezra, Kerry Brougher, and Phyllis Rosenzweig focus on all aspects of Ruscha's career, revealing him not merely as an artist closely linked with Los Angeles, but as an important international figure in contemporary art. Hollywood, gas stations, and the airbrushed style of commercial graphics figure predominantly in Ed Ruscha's art. One of the first artists to use text and pop imagery in his paintings, he captured the America of Route 66 and the Sunset Strip. Not tied down to painting, he produced books of photographs that catalog life with a dry, deadpan humor, including Thirtyfour Parking Lots, Nine Swimming Pools, and Some Los Angeles Apartments. Ruscha began his artistic endeavors with plans to become a commercial artist. With his 1956 arrival in Los Angeles and its art community, he was fast on his way to becoming a major creative force with a uniquely American perspective. [+]
The publication of Ed Ruscha coincides with the first traveling retrospective of Ruscha's work in nearly 20 years. Launched at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D. C. , the show covers his illustrious career from the 1960s through the present. If you can't make it to any of the show's other stops-Chicago, Fort Worth, Miami, or Oxford, England-then this book is a must-have. Included are three essays that elaborate on Ruscha's paintings, use of language, and photography in the context of art history by drawing parallels to earlier American painters and the history of documentary photography. Ruscha defies categorization by straddling both pop and conceptual art with his funny, elegant, and thoughtful work. -J. P. Cohen.

Review Odjig: The Art of Daphne Odjig, 1960-2000 / Key Porter Books:Odjig: The Art of Daphne Odjig, 1960-2000 is a graceful blend of biography, essay, and critique which illuminates the importance of this gifted artist to the Canadian artistic community and provides art lovers with a rare glimpse into the extraordinary heart of this painter. Odjig confronts the themes of the aboriginal experience, her family dynamic, and her spiritual beliefs in her paintings, which are extremely personal. Collectors of her works are awed by her innovative use of traditional aboriginal symbols, which transcend the specific culture from which they come. In the early 1960s, her development of a recognizable "Odjig style" garnered her enough attention to make possible her first solo show in 1967. Odjig's reputation as an artist was growing internationally and her commissioned painting Earth Mother was displayed at EXPO '70 in Japan. Odjig's importance as a Canadian artist is immeasurable. Bob Boyer, a renowned Metis artist and lecturer, absorbingly explores in his preface the place of Native art in the broader spectrum of Canadian culture, in order to provide a more in-depth perspective on Odjig's significance. Pamela Krueger, an award-winning appreciator of Canadian art, discusses in the introduction the course of Odjig's life and career and places her art into its cultural context.
