Review Leger Felicite Sonthonax: The Lost Sentinel of the Republic / Fairleigh Dickinson University Press:

Sonthonax was one of the most important leaders of the Haitian Revolution. Respected by few and hated by many, he died in his hometown of Oyonnax to which he had returned after evading the surveillance of Napoleon's police. After his death, this reputation scarcely changed; he has been rarely remembered and then unkindly. It is time, according to the author of this volume, to render justice to him.

Review Praeger Publishers / Alexander T. Stewart: The Forgotten Merchant Prince Publication date: 1992-06-30
Dewey code: 381.4500092
Price: $119.95

Review Alexander T. Stewart: The Forgotten Merchant Prince / Praeger Publishers:

This is the first major biography of Alexander T. Stewart, known during his lifetime as "The Merchant Prince" for his success in retail, wholesale, and manufacturing in New York City. At the time of his death in 1876, Stewart was one of the three wealthiest men in America, along with William B. Astor and Cornelius Vanderbilt. But, because he died with no surviving children, his name has all but been forgotten. In this work, Stewart is revived, his remarkable success as the "father" of the department store examined, and his great contributions to retailing acknowledged and recounted. Not only a definitive account, this story of a major figure in America's Gilded Age, as told by Stephen Elias, is also an absorbing tale. This work fills a gap in the literature on American history and the history of our retail trade. It will be of use to historians, students of merchandising, and those interested in New York's golden age.

Review Armorial General: Index to Suppts.: In French Suppt.9 / Heraldry Today:

The Armorial General series, described hereunder, is a multi-volume work on the coats-of-arms of the world; it is both monumental and without equal, and is the most exhaustive undertaking of its kind. Needless to say the volumes are in French, but the information is stereotyped, and easily understood. The Armorial General is the most authoritative work on the coats-of-arms in the world. The descriptions of the arms cover those of more than 100,000 families, alphabetically arranged and accurately described. The work was compiled from hundreds of armorials and it contains an extensive glossary of terms. In addition to a full description of the arms, most entries identify the nationality of the arms bearer, his title, and the date his title was conferred. The basic text was established with the publication of the second edition, corrected and enlarged, of 1884-1887. In 1950 a reprint was published in a limited edition of 250 copies, with a new Preface and new Additions and Corrections. The present reprint is an exact reproduction of this 1950 edition. It is the best edition available and the first to appear in America.

Review Laurence Binyon: Poet, Scholar of East and West / Oxford University Press, USA:

Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) is best remembered today for his 1914 Great War elegy "For the Fallen," but his importance extends well beyond this one famous poem. This is the first critical biography of one of the most remarkable scholar-artists in British cultural history, exploring all aspects of Binyon's richly varied career as poet, dramatist, translator, Western art historian, and pioneering scholar of Asian art and culture.
