Review Dictionary of Seventeenth-Century French Philosophers / Continuum:This major new publication is the most comprehensive reference source ever on seventeenth-century French authors who have contributed to the invention, spreading or discussion of philosophical ideas and issues. Featuring authors having published at least a book, or written a manuscript, between 1601 and 1700, the period beginning with Pierre Charron and ending with Fontenelle, the Dictionary uses the word 'philosophical' in a wide, seventeenth-century sense. It includes many scholastic figures, having taught metaphysics, logic and theology in Parisian colleges, in the Sorbonne and in the provinces, but also authors who have been involved in the many intellectual debates of the time, for or against Cartesianism, Jansenism, Free-thinking and the new science, many of whom were not philosophers. This wide approach to philosophy explains why the Dictionary includes not only metaphysics and logic, but science, ethics, aesthetics, education, politics, rhetoric, medicine, chemistry, alchemy and theology, and why many of the authors may more usually be called divines, scientists, mathematicians, or even alchemists, cabbalists and playwrights. In addition to short, but well documented, biographies of the writers, there are detailed expositions and analyses of their doctrines and ideas, bibliographies of their writings (including sometimes manuscripts) and suggestions for further reading. All the major seventeenth-century French philosophers are featured, but the most valuable characteristic of the Dictionary is its representation of a huge range of less well-known - and sometimes completely unknown - writers. In many cases the Dictionary offers the first scholarly treatment of the life and work of authors. This book will be an indispensable reference work for scholars working on almost any aspect of seventeenth-century French studies.

Review Joseph II: Volume 2, Against the World, 1780-1790 (Beales, Derek Edward Dawson//Joseph II) / Cambridge University Press:This second and final volume of Derek Beales's magisterial biography of the emperor Joseph II describes the period when he was sole ruler of the Austrian Monarchy. Influenced partly by Enlightenment ideals, Joseph relaxed censorship, introduced wide-ranging religious toleration and fostered a 'new Catholicism' whilst Mozart's music, the greatest cultural achievement of his reign, owed much to Joseph's patronage. He also abolished personal serfdom and diminished the nobles' power, seeking to achieve full personal control over all his provinces. Opposition became serious when his hyperactive foreign policy landed him in war against the Turks, and he died with his Belgian provinces in rebel hands and Hungary threatened by revolt and invasion. Though these pressures forced Joseph to withdraw some of his measures, Derek Beales argues that he left an indelible mark on the history of all his lands, which now form part of fifteen modern states.

Review Diana (Paragon Softcover Large Print Books) / Chivers Large print (Chivers, Windsor, Paragon & C:The sudden and tragic death of Princess Diana caused the world to reflect on how much this singular woman meant to us all. This new edition of her life story - which includes Diana's personal recollections in her own words, as well as an account of the events surrounding her death - poignantly strengthens her hold on our hearts. From her fairy-tale wedding and the births of her two wonderful boys to the stunning collapse of her marriage, Diana's luminous but troubled life transfixed millions. Despite enduring heartbreak, illness, and depression, she never wavered in her commitment to the less fortunate, or in her determination to make a better life for herself and her sons. This revealing book is the closest we will ever come to her autobiography - a lasting and powerful testament to her courage and spirit. Diana: Her True Story was originally published in 1992 under the guise of a quasi-authorized biography, with mostly unnamed courtiers and royalty as the accredited sources. It instantly became a sizzling, international bestseller that lanced the boil of Windsor family dysfunction, triggering a chain of events that led to Charles and Diana's divorce. After her tragic death in 1997, Morton revealed that Diana had not only been the main source for the book, but had also edited his original drafts for accuracy. In return for this gold mine of information, Diana wanted complete anonymity for fear of retaliation from the queen-a fear that seems reasonably justified after reading the icy, inhuman portrayal of Her Majesty. Beyond the racy and irregular royals, Diana: Her True Story gives a full account of the princess's rocky childhood, her bouts with bulimia, the rejection she felt by Charles and the royal family, and her tenacious ability to overcome adversity. Review Taxi: The Harry Chapin Story / Ashley Books:He was one of the most beloved performers in music history, a spokesman of the people and poet laureate to cab drivers, housewives, and commonfolk alike. Taxi is the definitive biography of Harry Chapin, written by his long-time friend and confidant. Chapin was an unsung hero, a modern-day Woody Guthrie. The recognition due him was late in coming. Awards are being given to Chapin in his death that he should have received while he lived. His music, his beliefs, and his social activism are finally being appreciated. Most of the world will remember Chapin for the "Story Song; ' the musical genre he popularized in one of his most famous songs, "Taxi". His unique appeal could be felt in concerts, for it was there that the real and dynamic Chopin emerged. His penchant for audience participation was his trademark. His performances often ended with tumultuous standing ovations; when the audience quieted down Chapin would stand center stage and give a short speech about his commitments. [+]
Often people drove hundreds of miles to hear him, making him one of the highest paid performers in the world. Even so, due to his selfless humanity and indefatigable interest in social causes, Chapin did not leave much money behind when he died. His involvement with world hunger helped spur widespread interest. He lobbied in Congress to endorse a Presidential Commission on world hunger. It was no coincidence that after his death 30 congressmen and 10 senators rose on the floor of the House to offer eulogies. Ironically it was the automobile, the very thing that made him famous in the song"Taxi, "which took his life. He died on the Long Island Expressway when his car burst into flames after being hit by a truck. "The immediate response to Chapin's death in the media and among his fans was truly overwhelming, ' wrote David Marsh of Rolling Stone. "It was as if he reached out and touched lives in a permanent and irrevocable way", HIS albums sold out in record stores. Throughout the.

Review The Legacy of Ludwig Von Mises (Intellectual Legacies in Modern Economic) / Edward Elgar Publishing:`The profoundly original Ludwig von Mises made pioneering contributions to our understanding of the modern economy in a number of areas: the problem of economic calculation under socialism, the dynamics of the mixed economy, the ordering role of market forces in banking and finance, and the monetary-shock theory of the business cycle. Editors Peter Boettke and Peter Leeson have usefully brought together a wide-ranging collection of papers - including some surprising choices - to exemplify fruitful research along Misesian lines. These volumes will help to give to Mises's insights the greater prominence among economists that they richly deserve. ' - Lawrence H. White, University of Missouri, St. Louis, US Ludwig von Mises is not the most well-known classical liberal political economist of the twentieth century. He has remained relatively obscure because both methodologically and ideologically his thinking went against the prevailing mood and on a personal level he was more difficult to approach than other thinkers of his time. However, among those in the know, he is considered to be the architect of Austrian economic thought, the most ardent defender of classical liberalism in the last century and history's strongest critic of socialism.
