Review H.P. Lovecraft: A Life / Necronomicon Press:The basic facts of H. P. Lovecraft's life have long been known, but before this book the only account of his life worth having was L. Sprague de Camp's 1975 biography, which was lively but sketchy, giving a fragmented view of Lovecraft's life and work. S. T. Joshi has delivered the goods. This is not only the finest and most definitive biography of Lovecraft, it is likely to remain so for many decades into the future. While at nearly 700 pages, it's not necessarily a book every Lovecraft fan will sit down and read cover to cover, it's almost as compulsively readable as it is compulsively detailed. Joshi is sympathetic toward his subject but doesn't pull any punches: he includes Lovecraft's less flattering qualities, such as his "contemptible" racism and his "shabby" treatment of his wife. [+]
Best of all, perhaps, for fans of Lovecraft's fiction, are the accounts of how the stories came to be written, concise plot summaries, and well-chosen historical-critical remarks. As Necrofile: The Review of Horror Fiction writes, "H. P. Lovecraft: A Life represents the crowning achievement of Joshi's distinguished career. It offers a concise and eminently readable summary of everything he has learned about Lovecraft, in one fat volume. Joshi has accomplished no mean feat: writing a biography almost as fascinating as his subject's best fiction. " -Fiona Webster.

Review Mary Shelley's Literary Lives and Other Writings (The Pickering Masters) / Pickering & Chatto Publishers:Following the success of Mary Shelley's Novels and Selected Works there was some regret that Mary Shelley's remaining writing remained unpublished. In particular, this includes her lyric poetry and her writing for Lardner's Cabinet Cyclopaedia of Biography as well as some material that has only recently been positively attributed to her. This can now be rectified with this four volume set that is edited to the same standard as the earlier edition. Publication of this material will allow libraries to complete the canon of Mary Shelley's work at a time when her literary reputation and interest in her continues to grow.

Review Whore Biographies, 1700-1825, Part 2: Vols. 5-8 / Pickering & Chatto Ltd:Across eight meticulously edited volumes, this two-part collection of carefully selected and extremely rare texts focuses on autobiographies and biographies of courtesans, directories of whores, erotic poems dedicated to harlots, jocular descriptions of prostitutes and jest books on strumpets. These provide invaluable primary sources for the study of sexuality, gender, women's studies and the literature and history of the eighteenth century. This new edition brings together an assortment of well-chosen primary material, offering academics easy access to as yet underused resources. This second part focuses on the genre of courtesans' autobiographies, on the little-known memoirs of Harriette Wilson, Julia Johnstone and Mrs Leeson. These autobiographies express the views of the women themselves: what they thought of their paramours; the sexual double standard; their jealousies; their friends; of chastity and infidelity. Descriptions of some of the leading figures of the day also feature in this part.

Review Portraits of Wittgenstein / Thoemmes Continuum:Portraits of Wittgenstein is a splendid anthology of almost all the personal memoirs of Wittgenstein's relatives, friends, pupils and acquaintances. Collectively they provide a remarkable portrait of the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century, vividly depict his circle of friends, and illuminate the relationship between the man and his philosophy. The enterprise of Thoemmes Press, as so often, makes available to the public a large collection of significant writings not otherwise readily available. -P. M. S. HackerLudwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) was one of the most influential and yet elusive personalities in the history of modern philosophy, and a figure who continues to fascinate. Portraits of Wittgenstein is a major collection of memoirs, recollections and articles on the life of this great philosopher, primarily by those who knew him. Revealing the many features of Wittgenstein's character and the power of his personality more vividly and comprehensively than ever before, these moving portraits show how much genuine friendship meant to Wittgenstein, his warmth and kindness and the life-long influence he had on the lives of those he met. The philosopher's ruthless honesty and uncompromising integrity, however, often resulted in stern advice and harsh rebukes to friends and foes alike. [+]
These fascinating and lucid recollections and impressions, often at odds with each other, also reveal Wittgenstein's charm and wonderful sense of humour, as well as his suffering and despair. The wealth of illuminating information and profound insights into Wittgenstein's extraordinary life make this an essential resource for a better understanding of the unity between this misunderstood man and his philosophy. Portraits of Wittgenstein also throws valuable light upon the personalities of his intellectual and social circle, including Bertrand Russell, G. E. Moore, F. R. Leavis, A. J. Ayer, Karl Popper, G. H. von Wright and Rush Rhees. This collection of valuable and hard-to-find material is an indispensable biographical resource for libraries, scholars and students of the life and work of Wittgenstein. -the only comprehensive collection of memoirs, recollections and articles on the life of Ludwig Wittgenstein -a wealth of insights and remarks that disclose, to the greatest extent thus far, the personality and character of one of the most influential and yet elusive personalities in the history of modern philosophy -4 volumes of reset materials, fully indexed, with a new introduction -contributors include: Hermine Wittgenstein, Bertrand Russell, G. E. Moore, David Pinsent, Paul Engelmann, Rudolf Carnap, Julian Bell, Fania Pascal, F. R. Leavis, Iris Murdoch, A. J. Ayer, Norman Malcolm, Karl Popper, G. H. von Wright, Rush Rhees and M. O'C. Drury.

Review The Givenchy Style / Vendome Press:Hubert de Givenchy's style is a magical alchemy of background, training, friends, travels around the world, visits to museums, and most important, his collections of painting, furniture, and decorative arts. This fascinating book, created in close collaboration with the designer of the rich and famous, explores the sources of inspiration of a brilliant artist who created a look that was the very essence of Paris chic. Filled with the fragility of Audrey Hepburn and the frivolity of the Duchess of Windsor, the book visits Givenchy's chateau outside Paris, his seaside house in Cap Ferrat, and his magnificent townhouse on Paris' venerable Rue de Grenelle. It follows Givenchy to his office, his atelier, and his fittings, while personal albums and never-before-published pictures illustrate how a very private life has influenced the way the whole world looks and dresses.

Review Lives of Victorian Political Figures II (Lives of Victorian Political Figures) / Pickering & Chatto Publishers:This four-volume facsimile edition looks at the lives and politics of four of the key players in the independence and labour movements of the nineteenth century: Daniel O'Connell (1775-1847), a non-violent campaigner for Catholic emancipation; Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-91), Home Rule MP; Michael Davitt (1846-1906), member of the violent Irish Republican Brotherhood and founder of the Irish Land League; and James Bronterre O'Brien (1805-64), a Chartist leader and working-class reformer. Wide-ranging political issues are addressed: Catholic Emancipation, self-governance, land-reform, universal suffrage and the labour movement, as well as the over-arching question of whether physical force should be used to achieve political ends if the democratic process collapses.
