Review His Natural Life (The Academy Editions of Australian Literature) / Univ of Queensland Pr:

One of the greatest 19th-century Australian novels and the grand epic of the transportation system, this novel charts the misfortune of Richard Divine, falsely accused of murder, through the worst Australian penal settlements, while retaining his humanity and spiritual dignity. So powerful is Clarke's representation of the brutality of transportation that more than a century later historians still struggle to disentangle fact from tragic fiction.

Review East Germany: What Happened to the Silesians in 1945? / Book Guild Ltd:

The agricultural province of Silesia had been in German hands for over 700 years, but as part of the reparations for Germany's defeat in World War II it was ceded to Poland in 1945. With that began a sequence of events chillingly familiar in the late 20th Century occupation, expulsion and forced repatriation. This is the true story of the people affected by this, an account of their suffering and a warning of the dangers of nationalism.

Review Poets Laureate in the Holy Roman Empire: A Bio-bibliographical Handbook / Walter de Gruyter:

Petrarch's revival of the ancient practice of laureation in 1341 led to the laurel being conferred on poets throughout Europe in the later Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. Within the Holy Roman Empire, Maximilian I conferred the title of Imperial Poet Laureate especially frequently, and later it was bestowed with unbridled liberality by Counts Palatine and university rectors too. This handbook identifies more than 1300 poets laureated within the Empire and adjacent territories between 1355 and 1804, giving (wherever possible) a sketch of their lives, a list of their published works, and a note of relevant scholarly literature. The introduction and various indexes provide a detailed account of a now largely forgotten but once significant literary-sociological phenomenon and illuminate literary networks in the Early Modern period.

Review The Biographical Dictionary of American Economists / Thoemmes Press:

The Dictionary covers American and Canadian economists and writers/thinkers with views on economics from the pre-Revolutionary period to the 1950s. All the major schools of American economic thought are represented, ranging from the Constitutional school to the Keynesian and the Chicago School. A significant number of the subjects are female, including figures such as Anna Schwartz, Mabel Timlin, Mabel Newcomer, Margaret Gilpin Reid, Rose Friedman and Elizabeth Boody Schumpeter, highlighting the role that women have played in the development of American economic thought. More generally, the dictionary includes many minor but important figures who have contributed to that development, ranging from William Penn and Cotton Mather to Augustus M. Kelley and Leon Marshall. Individually, the entries capture important and often overlooked contributions to the development of economic thought in America; collectively, they encapsulate the rich diversity of that thought and the influences that have been at play on American economic thinking over four centuries.
