Review Current Consumer Demand for Emerging Web Applications Leaves a Long Trail to Mass Market Adoption:The media is abuzz with stories about the next generation of web applications (i. e. , Web 2. 0). Users are empowered to rebuild the internet through social networking, social media and content creation applications. However, this buzz ignores one clear fact: Although adoption of new technologies continues to grow, few users are actively using and participating in Web 2. 0 technology creation and content generation. Consumers have widely adopted first-generation web tools such as e-mail, search, online shopping, news and information gathering. But there are still low adoption levels for many new technologies. For example, blog reading ranks as the most popular, with only 16% of households adopting this new technology. [+]
Yankee Group believes that during the past 4 years the number of individuals creating and collaborating online has had little to flat growth. Opportunities exist to build behavior among those consumers most interested in new applications and technologies. Social networking sites and portals will be important in building consumer behavior, launching new products and introducing the consumer to new technologies. The key to tapping into development is to target services to those that are interested in them. Mass market adoption can creep into the services of a number of web companies, each of which has a vested interest in keeping the consumer interested in applications and content. This Yankee Group Report examines US demand for Web 2. 0-related technologies. We extensively analyze the Yankee Group 2006 US Technologically Advanced FamilySM (TAF) Survey to understand consumer demand.

Review Anywhere Network Policy Issues in Emerging Markets:It is a given that communications regulatory policies continue to differ significantly on a region-by-region and country-by-country basis. The implications of this disparity are significant in terms of Anywhere NetworkTM definitions, let alone prospects. The meaning of anywhere access and communications connectivity changes vastly depending on the level of maturity of a market. It also dictates the focus of associated policy objectives and implementing mechanisms.

Review The Next Trillion Dollars from the Anywhere Network:For traditional fixed and mobile network operators, navigating to the Anywhere Network will be an uphill challenge. With voice revenue flattening or declining, traditional carriers are forced to look at different opportunities to increase customer ARPU and decrease their dependence on subscription-heavy business models. Fueled by rapid penetration of broadband and adoption of IP/MPLS core networks, carriers are looking to deliver innovative, profitable services, encompassing voice, video and data over the same transport network. Broadband adoption creates opportunities for fixed, mobile and cable operators to provide convergent and bundled service offerings. No single service or application will offset voice revenue decline.

Review Artificial Life II: Proceedings of the Workshop on Artificial Life Held February, 1990 in Santa Fe, New Mexico (Santa Fe Institute Studies in the Sciences of Complexity Proceedings) / Perseus Books (Sd):Artificial life is a new field of scientific inquiry that studies biology by attempting to synthesize such biological phenomena as life, evolution, and ecological dynamics within computers and other "artificial" media. In addition to uncovering new ways to study life as we know it, a life extends research to the larger domain of life as it could be, whatever it might be made of and wherever it might be found in the universe. This proceedings volume, based on the second artificial life workshop held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1990, reflects the evolution and horizons of this rich field of study, and builds on the proceedings of the seminal first workshop, held at Los Alamos in 1987 (also available from Addison Wesley). This compendium includes more than 30 papers spanning the spectrum of a-life research, from studies of the origin of life to models of complex systems.

Review Swimming Upstream: Service Providers Need New Business Model for User-Generated Content:For the better part of the past decade, developments in consumer broadband technology have concentrated on improving capacity on downstream—from the network to the user—data channels. Upstream capacity, or the channel from the user to the network, largely was an afterthought. With rare exceptions, such as the development of the DOCSIS 1. 1 standard, the entire focus of the broadband industry has been on improving the internet user experience by allowing for faster web page views and downloads. However, three significant behavioral and attitudinal shifts during the past 18 months have caused service providers and vendors to reconsider that focus and put more emphasis on upstream capacity. Those shifts are: Increased penetration of digital cameras, camera-equipped mobile phones and digital video cameras, along with the introduction of high-definition video cameras for consumers, which produce significantly larger digital files and will create greater strain on upstream capacity. Disaggregating of the traditional media value chain in which user-generated content is taking on more importance An increasingly dispersed workforce in which geographic boundaries are erased for knowledge workers In this Yankee Group report, we explore the potential for service providers to adopt a business model that monetizes upstream bandwidth. To arrive at these models, we explore a number of factors including: The applications that require increase upstream bandwidth capacity Current and future capabilities of access technology The cost structure required on the part of service providers to enhance upstream paths.

Review Technical and Regulatory Perspectives on FMC and Home Zone Solutions in Europe:Despite the flurry of fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) service launches, market demand and acceptance for such services remain unclear, and the push remains largely industry driven. Dual-mode handset availability remains a major issue, as do complex tariff structures and services options. Operators are taking multiple different approaches to FMC deployment in terms of both technical issues and service packaging. To compete in the convergence landscape, mobile network operators (MNOs) are offering fixed-mobile substitution (FMS) services. They remain a step ahead of the FMC pack, but for how long? In this Yankee Group Report, we gauge current FMC/FMS offerings from a European perspective, while describing the strengths and weaknesses of each.
