Review Form-Oriented Analysis / Springer:

Form-based applications range from simple web shops to complex enterprise resource planning systems. Draheim and Weber adapt well-established basic modeling techniques in a novel way to achieve a modeling framework optimized for this broad application domain. They introduce new modeling artifacts, such as page diagrams and form storyboards, and separate dialogue patterns to allow for reuse. In their implementation they have developed new constructs such as typed server pages, and tools for forward and reverse engineering of presentation layers. The methodology is explained using an online bookshop as a running example in which the user can experience the modeling concepts in action. The combination of theoretical achievements and hands-on practical advice and tools makes this book a reference work for both researchers in the areas of software architectures and submit-response style user interfaces, and professionals designing and developing such applications. More information and additional material is also available online.

Review Professional Hacking: Penetration Testing Tools and Techniques (Book & DVD) / Syngress:

This invaluable book and DVD package is designed to replicate the experience of in-classroom, instructor-led, penetration testing training which costs the typical security professional (or their employer) $1200-$2000 for the course alone, plus T&E, and days upon days of non-billable hours. Author Justin Peltier has delivered exactly this type of penetration testing training to thousands of security professionals around the world at some of the security industry's largest and most influential events and institutions including ISC2, Computer Security Institute, and ISSA. For the first time, Justin's years of experience, training, expertise, labs, and custom-built penetration testing tools are being presented in a single Book/DVD retail product. Penetration testing is the act of testing one's own network (or that of a client) to find security vulnerabilities before these exact same holes are found and more importantly exploited by phishers, digital piracy groups, and almost countless other organized or individual malicious hackers. Just like malicious hacking, penetration testing requires a delicate balance of art, science, and guts. This is the primary reasons that penetration testing training (not just Justin's but course offered by Foundstone, EC-Council, SANS, Global Knowledge, etc) has been so successful over the years. One can't just read a book and put up a shingle as a pen tester. The road to successfully breeching the security of a network, server, or application is a dynamic chess match. To be successful at attacking or defending a network, one must be as well versed in the ever-changing strategies and tactics of their opponent as their own. This completely unique book/DVD package brings the art and science of pen testing to our readers. [+]
They will learn how to attach all major operating systems including Windows, Linux, UNIX, and OS X. In addition, they will learn to attack Web and network-based applications, databases, and network perimeters and devices. Sound tricky?. It is. Because of this, the actual business of being a pen tester is equally tricky and brings with it significant liability (i. e. , you can easily break a really big, really expensive network). To satisfy this need, this package contains special chapters on running a successful and ethical penetration testing business. Included are legal guidelines along with sample reports and specification for consultants to provide to their internal and external clients. * Unique book and DVD package which for the first time delivers the art and science of penetration testing in a retail product. * Companion DVD contains custom designed penetration testing tools, a full suite of open source penetration testing tools, video walkthroughs of successful intrusions, and customizable reports and forms for conducting penetration tests. *Coverage includes open source and commercial penetration testing tools, and demonstrates network, application, Web-based, and database attacks.

The state government can present a map showing average income by area. Developers who want to publish maps on the web often discover that commercial tools cost too much and hunting down the free tools scattered across Internet can use up too much of your time and resources. Web Mapping Illustrated shows you how to create maps, even interactive maps, with free tools, including MapServer, OpenEV, GDAL/OGR, and PostGIS. It also explains how to find, collect, understand, use, and share mapping data, both over the traditional Web and using OGC-standard services like WFS and WMS. Mapping is a growing field that goes beyond collecting and analyzing GIS data. Web Mapping Illustrated shows how to combine free geographic data, GPS, and data management tools into one resource for your mapping information needs so you don't have to lose your way while searching for it. Remember the fun you had exploring the world with maps? Experience the fun again with Web Mapping Illustrated. [+]
This book will take you on a direct route to creating valuable maps.

Review Trust-based Recommendations in Multi-layer Networks (Dissertations in Artificial Intelligence-Infix) (Dissertations in Artificial Intelligence-Infix) / IOS Press:

The huge interest in social networking applications Friendster. com, for example, has more than 40 million users led to a considerable research interest in using this data for generating recommendations. Especially recommendation techniques that analyze trust networks were found to provide very accurate and highly personalized results. The main contribution of this work is to extend the approach to trust-based recommendations, which up to now have been made for isolated items such as movies, to linked resources, in particular documents. Therefore, a second type of network, namely a document reference network, is considered apart from the trust network. This is, for example, the citation network of scientific publications. Recommendations for documents are typically made by reference-based visibility measures which consider a document to be the more important, the more often it is referenced by important documents. Document and trust networks, as well as ones like organization networks are integrated in a multi-layer network. This architecture allows for combining classical visibility measures with trust-based recommendations, giving trust-enhanced visibility measures. The trust-based recommender system for scientific publications SPRec implements a two-layer architecture and provides personalized recommendations via a web interface.

Review Cyberimperialism?: Global Relations in the New Electronic Frontier / Praeger Publishers:

This collection of essays addresses whether all nations will actively participate in building the information superhighway or whether the Internet will reflect global technological inequalities. The writings are grouped in four major sections, which examine theoretical issues on cyberglobalization, politics in the electronic global village, global economic issues in cyberspace, and national identities and grassroots movements in cyberspace. Contributing scholars represent a wide spectrum of disciplines from political science, economics, and communications to sociology, anthropology, and philosophy. A number of methodological and theoretical perspectives direct the writings. Collectively, the essays point toward an emerging technology that exhibits innate qualities characteristic of the classic notion of cultural imperialism. This edited collection, with its timely approach to the implications of the Internet for global relations, will appeal to communication, sociology, and political science scholars. The interdisciplinary approach will also attract students and educators from such fields as anthropology, philosophy and economics. To aid in further research, select bibliographies follow each essay.
