Review The Public Treasury of the Muslims: Monthly Budgets of the Mahdist State in the Sudan, 1897 (Ottoman Empire and Its Heritage, Vol 5) (Ottoman Empire and Its Heritage, Vol 5) / Brill Academic Publishers:

In 1885 Khartoum fell into the hands of the Mahdist movement which put an end to 60 years of Egyptian rule in the Sudan. An independent state was founded along Islamic principles, and fiscal institutions such as the Public Treasury were affected. Through the translation and edition of the monthly budgets of nine and a half months in 1897, this work analyzes the various items of revenue and expenditure, the currencies in circulation, the system of accountancy and the organization of the Treasury. In addition to an analysis of the revenues, the introduction focuses on the organization of the Treasury and on the system of accountancy, concluding that the Mahdists relied heavily on early Islamic as well as on Ottoman models, which they modified to suit local conditions.

Review Fuzzy Logic in Financial Analysis (Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing) / Springer:

In today’s increasingly complex and uncertain business environment, financial analysis is yet more critical to business managers who tackle problems of an economic or business nature. Knowledge based on formal logic and even experience becomes less sufficient. This volume systematically sets out the basic elements on which to base financial analysis for business in the new century. It incorporates a previous work that can serve as the basis and foundation for the new contributions that are now being made in the field of financial economy and intend to provide business with instruments and models suitable for dealing with the new economic context. In dealing with rapid and unpredictable changes in technological and business conditions, it postulates a growing reliance on the opinions of experts instead of past data or probabilistic forecasts, which is a radical change but may yield fruitful results. For this reason, much emphasis is devoted to the problem of aggregation of the opinion of experts in the financial field, with the object of limiting, wherever possible, the subjective component of the opinions and making sure that the decisions have the best guarantee of reaching the desired objectives.

As more businesses in today’s economy are moving towards a global reach, it is essential for finance students to understand how the fundamentals of corporate finance relate to multinational firms.   Shapiro’s Multinational Financial Management 9th Edition provides that conceptual framework within which key financial decisions of a multinational firm can be analyzed. The author’s comprehensive approach is to treat international financial management as a natural extension of the principles learned in the first course in financial management. Publication date: 1999-11-30
Dewey code: 332.45011

Review Exchange Rate Modelling (Advanced Studies in Theoretical and Applied Econometrics) / Springer:

Are foreign exchange markets efficient? Are fundamentals important for predicting exchange rate movements? What is the signal-to-ratio of high frequency exchange rate changes? Is it possible to define a measure of the equilibrium exchange rate that is useful from an assessment perspective? The book is a selective survey of current thinking on key topics in exchange rate economics, supplemented throughout by new empirical evidence. The focus is on the use of advanced econometric tools to find answers to these and other questions which are important to practitioners, policy-makers and academic economists. In addition, the book addresses more technical econometric considerations such as the importance of the choice between single-equation and system-wide approaches to modelling the exchange rate, and the reduced form versus structural equation problems. Readers will gain both a comprehensive overview of the way macroeconomists approach exchange rate modelling, and an understanding of how advanced techniques can help them explain and predict the behavior of this crucial economic variable.
