Review Central Bank Modernisation / Central Banking Publications:As central banks around the world upgrade their governance and strategic planning and manage major internal and external reforms, this new compilation of studies by leading experts shows how these challenges can be met. Introducing a new payments system. Modernising the process of monetary policymaking. Spurring national financial sectors to greater efficiency and competitiveness. Reorganising and streamlining their own functions. These are just some of the tasks on which a modern central bank is typically engaged. Because each central bank is the only institution of its kind in its national economy, there are no simple “roadmaps” to guide the reform. Central Bank Modernisation is the first complete analysis of how policymakers can confront and surmount these obstacles. It is edited by Peter Nicholl, former deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and former governor of the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and by Neil Courtis of Central Banking Publications. The book combines rigorous analysis with practical case studies to illustrate how many leading central bankers have in practice reformed their institutions.

Review Europe-Toward the Next Generation / Springer:This book is the third volume in the new series of books on International Regional Economic Integration published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. The Editor begins his examination with an extensive introduction which emphasizes the historic nature of the next enlargement of the European Union. The point of reference for enlargement is the European Commission's Agenda 2000, which covers all the policy areas which the new Member States will have to accept. Although this document is a very important one, it does not pay enough attention to the necessary policy changes and institutional changes which should be made in advance of enlargement. This volume tries to rectify this oversight by offering an assessment of the costs and benefits of enlargement to present and future EU Member States. In view of the importance of all these considerations, special attention is paid to the possible implications of the weak compromises made at the much-heralded Berlin Conference, held in March 1999. To that end, the volume presents an examination of the policy and institutional changes which must be made in advance of enlargement.

Review Conflicts of Interest: Corporate Governance and Financial Markets / Kluwer Law International:Conflicts of interest arise naturally in all walks of life, particularly in business life. As general and indeed inevitable phenomena, conflicts of interest should not be prohibited but properly managed. This book presents indepth analysis of such management in three areas of corporate governance where the conflict-of-interest problems are particularly acute: executive compensation, financial analysis, and asset management. "Conflicts of Interest" presents the results of a two-year-long research project bringing together academics and practitioners in both law and finance from Europe and the US under the auspices of the Centre for Banking and Financial Law of the University of Geneva. This book discusses the following issues: the duty of loyalty; remedies, such as disclosure, incentives, organizational measures; regulation and enforcement; and market considerations. With its intense focus on the material effects of actual conflicts of interest at the core of modern corporate governance and financial markets, this incomparable book will inform not only business people, practitioners, and academics, but also legislators, regulators, and all concerned with the far-reaching ramifications of conflict-of-interest management.
