Much of current management literature focuses on a limited set of ‘classical’ value levers, such as cost reduction, sales optimization or mergers & acquisitions, thus neglecting another core value lever: capital investments. That capital investments receive such limited attention is all the more surprising when one considers how vitally important they are to the economy as a whole as well as individual businesses. There is significant value-creation potential in optimizing capital investments. Investments not only determine the asset structure of a venture. They also enable the introduction of new products structural cost reductions. The book focuses on core questions to be answered in the critical design and realization phase of new investments: Right positioning – does the competitive situation allow the investment to be successful Right technology – how to optimize timing and risks of technology innovations Right timing – how to cope with economic cycles Right size – how to identify the optimum size of an asset Right location – how to find the best location for an asset Right design – how to make investments lean and flexible Right financing – how to structure the investment financing The book features an introductory section that provides an overview of investments across the globe, across industries and across time provides practical advice on how to allocate capital to several projects within a company’s investment portfolio. Optimising fixed Asset Investment is illustrated with real world examples from a range of industries. This book is essential reading for managers faced with challenges of making individual or portfolio capital investment decisions and who are responsible for managing these capital assets over their entire asset lifecycle. The ideas put forward within the book will help to sharpen the focus of management on the impact capital investments have on the well-being and growth of their companies. ‘Optimizing Fixed Asset Investments’ is a strategic manual for everyone involved or interested in large fixed-capital investments.

Dewey code: 332.10681
List Price: $125.00

Review Measuring and Managing Operational Risks in Financial Institutions: Tools, Techniques, and other Resources (Wiley Frontiers in Finance) / Wiley:

Measuring and Managing Operational Risks in Financial Institutions describes the first systematic approach to identifying, measuring, analyzing, and managing all the operational exposures within a business. Starting with business lines most critical processes and resources, the author explains how to use loss data to model the most significant discrete loss events and continuous risk factors that may affect them. It goes on to explain how risks can be aggregated over the entire business and therefore used to estimate the risk capital associated with different parts of the business. The author also develops a contingent approach to enterprise and operational risk management, going beyond the narrow functional approaches traditionally advocated by financial risk managers, insurance managers, quality engineers and the like. Measuring and Managing Operational Risks in Financial Institutions is essential reading for anyone involved in operational and enterprise-wide risk management.

Review Springer / Credit Risk, Capital Structure and the Pricing of Equity Options Edition: 1
Publication date: 2003-05-15
Dewey code: 332
List Price: $99.95
Price: $58.79

Review Credit Risk, Capital Structure and the Pricing of Equity Options / Springer:

This book is on option pricing in firm-value-based ("structural") credit risk models. Using modern techniques (change of numeraire) instead of directly solving partial differential equations (the main approach in the literature), closed-form pricing formulae for options on equity can be derived for a range of well-known models from this class. A common feature of these models is the assumption of an exogenously given firm value process, which leads to an endogenous equity (stock) price process. The stock price process depends directly on the firm's capital structure. This allows us not only to study credit risk effects in option prices, but also to investigate option price changes resulting from changes in a firm's capital structure. Numerical results illustrate the implications of our models. Numerous figures and tables allow for an easy comparison of various structural credit risk models.

Review University of Michigan Press / Banking on Reform: Political Parties and Central Bank Independence in the Industrial Democracies (Michigan Studies in International Political Economy) Publication date: 2002-04-30
Dewey code: 332.11
List Price: $70.00
Price: $69.30

Review Banking on Reform: Political Parties and Central Bank Independence in the Industrial Democracies (Michigan Studies in International Political Economy) / University of Michigan Press:

Banking on Reform examines the political determinants of recent reforms to monetary policy institutions in the industrial democracies. With these reforms, political parties have sought to draw on the political credibility of an independent central bank to cope with electoral consequences of economic internalization and deindustrialization. New Zealand and Italy made the initial efforts to grant their central banks independence. More recently, France, Spain, Britain, and Sweden have reformed their central banks' independence. Additionally, members of the European Union have implemented a single currency, with an independent European central bank to administer monetary policy. Banking on Reform stresses the politics surrounding the choice of these institutions, specifically the motivations of political parties. Where intraparty conflicts have threatened the party's ability to hold office, politicians have adopted an independent central bank. Where political parties have been secluded from the political consequences of economic change, reform has been thwarted or delayed. The drive toward a single currency also reflects these political concerns. By delegating monetary policy to the European level, politicians in the member states removed a potentially divisive issue from the domestic political agenda, allowing parties to rebuild their support constructed on the basis of other issues. [+]
William T. Bernhard provides a variety of evidence to support his argument, such as in-depth case accounts of recent central bank reforms in Italy and Britain, the role of the German Bundesbank in the policy process, and the adoption of the single currency in Europe. Additionally, he utilizes quantitative and statistical tests to enhance his argument. This book will appeal to political scientists, economists, and other social scientists interested in the political and institutional consequences of economic globalization. William T. Bernhard is Assistant Professor of Political Science, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Review From Walden to Wall Street: Frontiers of Conservation Finance / Island Press:

In the absence of innovation in the field of conservation finance, a daunting funding gap faces conservationists aiming to protect America's system of landscapes that provide sustainable resources, water, wildlife habitat, and recreational amenities. Experts estimate that the average annual funding gap will be between $1. 9 billion and $7. 7 billion over the next forty years. Can the conservation community come up with new methods for financing that will fill this enormous gap? Which human and financial resources will allow us to fund critical land conservation needs? From Walden to Wall Street brings together the experience of more than a dozen pioneering conservation finance practitioners to address these crucial issues. Contributors present groundbreaking ideas including mainstreaming environmental markets; government ballot measures for land conservations; convertible tax-exempt financing; and private equity markets. The creativity and insight of From Walden to Wall Street offers considerable hope that, even in this era of widespread financial constraints, the American conservation community's financial resources may potentially grow dramatically in both quantity and quality in the decades to come.

Review The Bank of England: Money, Power and Influence 1694-1994 / Oxford University Press, USA:

The Bank of England's imminent tercentenary (July 1994), coming as it does with the future status of the Bank a subject of much discussion, is an apposite moment to offer an overview of the Bank's history as a whole. This collection of essays is the first attempt to identify the most important themes of the institution's history and put them in a long-term perspective. The main pieces will deal with the Bank's relations with government, its impact on the British economy, its role in international central banking, its position in the City of London, and its changing composition and management. In addition, in a piece likely to cause considerable interest, the Deputy Governor (Rupert Pennant Rea) will be looking at all these themes in a contmporary light and offering some thoughts about the Bank's future. Added value is given by two main appendices: a detailed chronology of the Bank's history; and a comprehensive listing of its governors, directors, and senior officials. In sum, this is a book that meets a clear intellectual need, while also being extremely convenient for those unwilling or unable to embark on the circa 2600 pages of the three main official histories. Review Butterworth-Heinemann / The Management of Equity Investments Publication date: 2005-02-17
Dewey code: 332.6
List Price: $108.00
Price: $64.21

Review The Management of Equity Investments / Butterworth-Heinemann:

The Management of Investments is based on an extensive research project done by the author in 2003 and 2004, in the United States, England, Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland. The author outlines the rules behind the able management of investments by private individuals, banks, and institutional investors. These rules are examined within the perspective of each entity's goals and challenges. Based on research results and on his own experience, the author demonstrates that shareholder value is usually being paid lip service. As far as investment results are concerned, there are serious risks associated to leveraging, near-sighted management, obsolescence of skills and dubious deals. But there are also investment rules which, when observed, help in avoiding the slippery path which ends with investors losing their capital. To help in explaining these rules, the book outlines the way capital markets work, equity research is done, and risks associated to biases. It also pays attention to forces propelling economic growth - or downturn. Growth is usually dictated by the customer, but the customer is influenced by market psychology, liquidity, volatility, and prospects of the product or financial instrument he contemplates to buy. Case studies on instruments in the book examine equities, interest rates and exchange rates. [+]
The text also analyzes the role played by hedge funds and their strategies, as well as risks associated to alternative investments. * Explains the benefits provided by sound investment management* Suggests ways and means to gain investor confidence* Includes lessons which can be learned from the market bubble of the late 1990s, the long 2000-2003 market depression and the starting recovery in 2004.
