Review The Bazaars of Istanbul / Thames & Hudson:

The bazaar quarter of Istanbul is a mirror of the city itself: many-faceted and hectic, extraordinarily beautiful and chaotic at the same time. On the historic peninsula, centuries-old market halls and mosques share space with kiosks and new concrete buildings. Spacious stores with brightly lit window displays compete with tiny cluttered shops in dark alleys. This is a place where the Thousand and One Nights and global chic come together, a meeting place of opposites.

Review Giovanna's Legacy Gifts from Her Italian Kitchen / Xlibris Corporation:

This is the first in a series of cookbooks that will be published to honor my mother and extraordinary Italian cook, Giovanna Morelli Falbo. It contains my mother's favorite recipes, those she brought with her from her home in Italy, and that nourished our family and friends as we grew up in Abington Pennsylvania. The next edition, "Giovanna's Legacy: An Italian/American Kitchen," will feature recipes I've developed, using principles I learned from her through the years as we prepared meals together. The book is a collection of over 180 recipes preserving the Italian heritage of a remarkable woman, my Mom. Born and raised in Calabria, Italy, these homemade meals embrace the essence of a woman who loved feeding others and watching their delight. The collection includes recipes from traditional Italian holiday meals to everyday celebrations and dining. You will find recipes such as Antipasto, baked ziti and lasagna, pasta with fennel, olives, tomatoes and pine nuts, rice patties, baccala salad, chicken and veal piccata, roasted pork with fennel, pepper and potato frittata (omelet), stuffed eggplant, Easter Pie, Italian Wedding soup, pizelles, cherry pudding cheese cake, biscotti, tiramisu, marinara sauce, plus more.

Review Joe Di Maggio's Restaurant-Original Recipes / OmniLand Books:

From the Author: About This Book Operating a restaurant is more than knowing how to cook. A customer wants good food but most want it fast, a connotation most restaurateurs would rather not associate with his establishment. I hope to transfer the experience garnered during my years in the restaurant industry to these pages and create a recipe book unique to the home food preparation devotees. By following the suggestions in this book, your ability to set an elegant meal on the table becomes easy and timesaving. Visual references, meticulously detailed, are included to guide you and help you achieve culinary aptness in each recipe. In my opinion, with some obvious exceptions, there is no one rule and no one recipe when it comes to cooking. Hundreds of different recipes exist for every food and improvising is a way of life for the food preparation enthusiast, always trying to make it look and taste better. I encourage experimentation; let your imagination take wings. My culinary efforts in the pages of this book are intended to plant a seed that will grow to astronomical proportions; and if that happens I will have reached my end. Eating is an art form that is requisite to the Italian a way of life. [+]
I think it is accurate to say cooking is an obligatory add-on ability. During my trek through life it has become apparent to me that many Italians do have intrinsic culinary skills; but in truth, eating is close to the top of the list. However, I'll not confine the love for good food to Italians. Who doesn't appreciate a perfect slice of Pizza or golden-crusted bread, Mother Nature's fruits and vegetables fresh off the vine with dewdrops glistening on flawless skin. How about a splendid wedge of well-aged cheese next to a glass of your favorite wine? Today the influence of Italian food in the kitchen circles the globe, but perhaps, nowhere as naturally as in our American homes. I dedicate this book to the millions of food aficionados across this country; I dedicate this book to America.

Dewey code: 641.5941

Review The New English Table: Over 200 Recipes that Will Not Cost the Earth / Fourth Estate:

Rose explores affordable and easy good food with the 200 completely delectable and original recipes in this inspiring new book. She unlocks a larder of new and unfamiliar English ingredients from cobnuts to red Duke of York potatoes to watercress, and also shows how eating local can mean good eating at the same time as being good for the environment. She explains how and where to shop and introduces a rhythm of cooking, identifying which foods are right for everyday meals, and which for the occasional feast. She shows how to make the most of costly ingredients—traditional breeds, organic produce, and handmade foods—recycling leftovers for yet more delicious meals. Leftovers from a roast beef joint, for instance, become an aromatic salad with toasted green pumpkin seeds and herbs, or, simmered with fungi and red wine, a rich braise to eat with mash or buttered ribbons of pasta. The New English Table is proof that good eating does not have to cost the earth.

"Vefa's Kitchen" is the first authoritative and all-encompassing Greek recipe book in English. Doing for Greek cuisine what the hugely successful "Silver Spoon" did for Italian, it contains more than 700 fully updated, straightforward and mouthwatering recipes. Aimed at all lovers of Mediterranean food, the book will appeal to anyone who loves to cook easy, tempting and delicious dishes, from simple but stunning salads and mezedes in summer, to slowly simmered meat dishes and crisp filo pastries in winter. As well as presenting definitive recipes for taverna favourites such as moussaka, tzatziki and hummus, the book documents the extraordinary variety of local sweets and pastries, delicious home-baked breads and cheeses of the mountainous interior, as well as the fish and vegetable dishes of coastal areas, simply fragranced with lemons and herbs. Like Italian cuisine, Greek cooking is incredibly simple and delicious, and is based on the natural qualities of good olive oil, fruit and vegetables, grains and seafood. And more than almost any other cuisine, modern Greek food contains many traces of its remarkable history, with its origins as far back as Homer and the 'wine-dark' Aegean Sea of the Iliad. The health benefits of the traditional Greek diet are well documented, and the extensive Greek repertoire of vegetable dishes is well represented, with more than 300 dishes that do not contain meat or fish. There is a comprehensive introduction on local ingredients and wines, the history of Greek cooking and the culinary characteristics of each region, as well as recipes for traditional and religious dishes. Vefa Alexiadou is the leading culinary authority in Greece today and is the author of many bestselling cookbooks. "Vefa's Kitchen" will quickly become a must-have for all home cooks and lovers of Mediterranean food.

Review Buon Appetito, Your Holiness: The Secrets of the Papal Table / Diane Pub Co:

A titillating, intriguing, & hugely enjoyable account of the papacy & papal culinary tastes, seen through the often secret recipes of the Popes' storied kitchens, from St. Peter himself to the present pontiff. Italian social historians Mariangela Rinaldi & Mariangela Vicini here give us a fascinating history of the papacy, while at the same time providing recipes which offer a vivid & colorful fresco of food in Italy & Europe, from the origins of papal Rome to the present day. The authors reveal not only the culinary secrets of the papal kitchens but offer many of the favorite recipes with which the Holy Fathers regaled themselves. The recipes, ranging from the plain & the classic to the wildly eccentric, are for the most part extremely easy to follow. Italy being Italy, food there forms a central part of the culture and of daily life, even in the otherworldly confines of the Vatican. Popes being human beings as well as ambassadors of the divine, the food of the Vatican has ranged, over 2,000 years, from the ascetic to the sumptuous, reflecting the tastes of the officeholder. Where, for instance, John Paul II favors clear soups and the occasional serving of white meat, his Renaissance predecessor Alexander VI was an accomplished and omnivorous glutton-to whose endless appetite, write Parma-based historians Rinaldi and Vicini, the Western world owes the custom of the Christmas Eve feast. Rinaldi and Vicini offer a vivid, anecdotal, and thoroughly entertaining account of the popes and their varied palates, matching historical observations with recipes fit for a celestial table. For the first pope, Saint Peter, they suggest a wondrous risotto prepared with arborio rice and canteloupe, followed by sole stuffed with crayfish and truffles-a bit elaborate for that simple fisherman, perhaps, but delicious nonetheless. [+]
For Paul II, the great humanist and tactician, their menu calls for Venetian rice soup, baked grouse, and Roman-style tripe-not the stuff of an ordinary meal, but a sure hit among the daring. And to commemorate the latest year of Jubilee, Rinaldi and Vicini suggest a nice glass of Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's greatest wines, but also a slice of pane della carità, or "bread of charity," made of equal parts of wheat, oat, and barley flour. Rinaldi and Vicini's book mixes well-tested recipes with fascinating, sometimes bizarre episodes of ecclesiastical history. In every regard, it's a treat. -Gregory McNamee.
