Review Paying the Social Debt: What White America Owes Black America / Praeger Publishers:Richard America here redefines the complex problems of racial economic injustice, poverty, inequality, and lagging competitiveness and productivity in the United States. In a sure-to-be-controversial analysis, the author argues that there is a true debt owed by White America to Black America, that this debt is significant, and that it has now come due. He estimates the size of Whites' debt to Blacks, shows how that debt came to be, and suggests creative ways of paying it back. This book argues persuasively that the social and racial problems in the United States cannot be solved until we acknowledge that the "haves" truly and literally owe money to the "have nots. ".

Review August Wilson: A Research and Production Sourcebook (Modern Dramatists Research and Production Sourcebooks) / Greenwood Press:When Ma Rainey's Black Bottom opened in 1984, August Wilson was unknown in theatre. By 1988 he was described as the foremost dramatist of the American black experience and was the most acclaimed playwright of his time by 1990. He is one of only seven American playwrights to win two Pulitzer prizes and one of only three black playwrights to receive that award. Remarkably, Wilson has been able to explore and communicate the American black experience, while also achieving a universality that attracts the white audiences needed for commercial success. Based on extensive research that includes two interviews with Wilson, this reference book is a comprehensive guide to Wilson's life and career. The volume begins with a chronology outlining the principle events in Wilson's rise from the racism he experienced as a youth in Pittsburgh to his triumphs on the New York stage. A brief biography illuminates his approach to writing plays, his outlook on life and the theatre, and the way his experiences have shaped his art. The volume then provides plot synopses for each of Wilson's plays, an overview of their critical reception, production histories, and extensive annotated bibliographic information. Thus the book provides a detailed record of the development of interest in Wilson's work from the critical acclaim of his early plays to his recent controversial debate with Robert Brustein.

Review African American Autobiographers: A Sourcebook / Greenwood Press:There is growing popular and scholarly interest in autobiography, along with increasing regard for the achievements of African American writers. The first reference of its kind, this volume chronicles the autobiographical tradition in African American literature. Included are alphabetically arranged entries for 66 African American authors who present autobiographical material in their works. The volume profiles major figures, such as Frederick Douglass, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, and Malcolm X, along with many lesser known autobiographers who deserve greater attention. While some are known primarily for their literary accomplishments, others have gained acclaim for their diverse contributions to society. The entries are written by expert contributors and provide authoritative information about their subjects. Each begins with a concise biography, which summarizes the life and achievements of the autobiographer. This is followed by a discussion of major autobiographical works and themes, along with an overview of the autobiographer's critical reception. The entries close with primary and secondary bibliographies, and a selected, general bibliography concludes the volume. Together, the entries provide a detailed portrait of the African American autobiographical tradition from the 18th century to the present.

Review A Life of Anne of Hanover, Princess Royal (Publications of the Sir Thomas Browne Institute Leiden, New Series, No 13 No 13) (Publications of the Sir Thomas ... Institute Leiden, New Series, No 13 No 13) / Brill Academic Publishers:The eldest daughter of George II, and Handel's most knowledgeable patron, Anne is the only English princess since the fifteenth century to rule alone in a foreign country. In the Netherlands she is the least known of the energetic and able women from Amalia van Solms to Emma of Waldeck-Pyrmont who have married into the House of Orange, but she is unique in holding real political power. This book uses hitherto unpublished private papers which give a vivid picture of eighteenth century social life in London, Friesland and The Hague. But, more importantly, they show her influence on Dutch politics at a time of constitutional change, while letters to her father, her brother `Butcher' Cumberland and her cousin Frederick the Great show her playing a significant role on the European diplomatic stage.

Review Edward VII's Children / Sutton Publishing Ltd:King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra had six children. Of the five who reached maturity, only one, the future King George V, has received much attention from biographers. The eldest son, Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, a backward youth and a subject of scandal, died before he was thirty. The three princesses, Louise, Princess Royal and Duchess of Fife, the lifelong spinster Victoria, and Maud, Queen of Norway, were never well-known to the British public during their lifetime. In this detailed and fascinating account, John Van der Kiste has drawn upon previously unpublished correspondence from the Royal Archives, Windsor, to reveal for the first time the part this hitherto neglected group of characters played in supporting the royal family and crown during a period of transition from the Victorian age to the uncertain twentieth century.
