Review The Writings and Speeches of Oliver Cromwell: With an Introduction, Notes and an Account of His Life Volume II The Commonwealth 1649-1653 / Oxford University Press, USA:This second volume of Abbott's classic edition covers the period, unique in England's history, of republican rule. It begins with the abolition of the monarchy and the House of Lords in 1649 and ends in April 1653 with Cromwell's dramatic and forcible expulsion of the "Rump," the remnant of the House of Commons left behind by Pride's Purge in December 1648. Between 1649 and 1651, when the infant Commonealth was fighting for survival against the royalists, Cromwell achieved some of his most famous and decisive victories: the merciless crushing of the Irish at Drogheda and Wexford, and the defeat of the Scots at Dunbar and Worcester. The campaigns which produced these victories, and which resulted in the incorporation of Ireland and Scotland into the English commonwealth, are described at length. So is the deterioration of Cromwell's relations with the Long Parliament which followed his return to politics at Westminster in 1651. The Rump's refusal to grant the religious, social, and parliamentary reforms demanded by the army finally provoked Cromwell to clear the chamber and, by destroying the parliament which had fought against Charles I, to take the Puritan Revolution into uncharted constitutional territory.

Review Renaissance Man from Louisiana: A Biography of Arna Wendell Bontemps (Contributions in Afro-American and African Studies) / Greenwood Press:In his youth a prominent figure of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, Arna Wendell Bontemps matured into a renaissance man in the broadest sense, a person fully engaged in the life of the intellect. He contributed vastly to the culture of his era through his own writings-fiction, plays, poetry, children's books, scholarship, and criticism-and advanced it through teaching, librarianship, and as a sponsor and patron of other artists. This detailed and fond biography provides a thorough analysis of Bontemps's private and public lives. Author Kirkland Jones is effective at portraying Bontemps's Creole family background and childhood in Louisiana and California, his roles as rebellious but devoted son and loving and supportive husband and father, his fertile contributions to the arts, and his abiding commitment to service, which is perhaps most in evidence in his building of African-American library collections at Fisk University. A colleague and friend of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and other outstanding African-American writers, Bontemps has been curiously neglected by biographers. Utilizing copious archival and interview materials in this carefully researched study, Kirkland Jones fills out the portrait of Bontemps that previously could only be glimpsed from biographies of his contemporaries and his published correspondence with them. In the process, factual errors about Bontemps's life are corrected. A work of painstaking scholarship, this biography nevertheless is written to appeal to young people and adults interested in this admirable and fascinating gentleman-scholar-poet as well as to students of American and African-American literature and cultural and intellectual history.

Review The Flight of Icarus: Artisan Autobiography in Early Modern Europe / Stanford University Press:Exploring autobiographical texts written by European urban craftsmen from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, this wide-ranging book studies memoirs, diaries, family chronicles, travel narratives, and other forms of personal writings from Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and England. In the process, it considers the motivations of the authors, the changing forms and emphases of artisan narratives, and, more generally, the significance of written self-expression in early modern popular culture. By analyzing reading and writing as practices laden with social meaning, this work aims to illuminate the changing role of the lower classes and other groups considered marginal in the history of literature and literacy. It uncovers an Icarian logic by which writing about the self and ones immediate and private world developed as a complex response to widely shared expectations regarding the cultural and political subordination of craftsmen and others relegated to the margins of public life and discourse.

Review Empresses and Power in Early Byzantium (Women, Power & Politics) / Continuum International Publishing Group:Examining the role and position of the Byzantine empress between the fourth and the eighth centuries, this work explores the nature of female imperial power and contrasts it with male power. Was there such a thing as the "office of emperor/empress", or did power depend on individual personalities? This text investigates five questions: who the empress is; how she is titled; how she is talked about; what she looks like; and what she does. The period under discussion takes the reader from the empress-mother Helena, the first overtly Christian empress, to the only "female" emperor in Byzantine history, Eirene, and encompasses the time of the transition from the Roman world to the medieval.

Review Queen Christina of Sweden and Her Circle: The Transformation of a Seventeenth-Century Philosophical Libertine (Brill's Studies in Intellectual History) / Brill Academic Pub:The life and works of Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689) have often been obscured behind a haze of Iurid myths and legends. This book looks again at her notorious abdication of 1654, seeing it against the background of her reputation as a "libertine", a heterodox religious thinker. Her subsequent conversion to Catholicism is therefore understood as a consequence of messianic and millenarian expectations during those turbulent years, and her bizarre attempt in 1657 to become the ruler of Naples is revealed to be the political wing of a comprehensive religious and intellectual philosophy.

Review Walter Rodney's Intellectual and Political Thought (African American Life) / Wayne State University Press:Placing Walter Rodney's (1942-1980) work in the larger tradition of West Indian involvement with continental Africa, this study traces the evolution of Rodney's political ideas through examination of his life, his writings on Africa and the Caribbean, and his political practice. A West Indian, Pan-Africanist, and Marxist, Rodney functioned in the intellectual tradition of C. L. R. James, Henry Sylvester-Williams, and George Padmore of Trinidad and Tobago, Theophilus Scholes and Marcus Garvey of Jamaica, and the collective force of the Rastafarian movement - although his post-colonial - era perspective set him apart from these earlier figures. Continuing to receive critical attention today, Rodney's work is largely concerned with reconstructing the political economy of the Atlantic slave trade and analyzing its consequences for Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The first three chapters of this study follow Rodney's life from his birth in British Guiana in 1942 through the start of his professional life as a historian at age 24. The remaining seven chapters explore significant issues in his research into African and Caribbean history and vital moments of his political activism from 1966 to his murder in 1980 at age 38. The first single-authored biography of Walter Rodney, this book offers interviews with individuals in the Caribbean and Africa to further exhibit the inspiring life of this eminent scholar and activist.

Review Bede and His World: The Jarrow Lectures, 1958-1993 (Collected Studies Series) / Variorum:The figure of Bede dominates the intellectual history of the early medieval West, and it is to him, his works, and the world in which he lived that these papers are devoted. The first Jarrow lecture was in 1958, on the 1273rd anniversary of the dedication of St Paul's Church. Since then these annual lectures have come to make a fundamental contribution to our understanding of Bede and his place in the history of Anglo-Saxon England and medieval Christianity.
